16 Brunel Quays Coastal Cottage description

Holiday home
16 Brunel Quays was originally a railway building, named after its designer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It has been restored to offer a high standard of accommodation, but retains many of its original features, such as arched windows and exposed stonework. The cottage has 4 bedrooms and will sleep up to 7 people, making it an idyllic retreat for large families or groups of friends. It also has a unique location, being bordered by the railway and its slow-passing trains on one side and the river quays on the other. The railway station is about 2 minutes' walk away, giving you access to trains that will take you to the major train stations and towns in Cornwall.

Area
The small Cornish town of Lostwithiel sits in the Fowey river valley. Along the coastsyou will find small fishing ports, areas of great historical interest and monuments shrouded in myth and legend which give Cornwall much of its character. Inland, you can find remnants of the famous Cornish Tin Mining industry – a profession which gave rise to the invention of the Cornish Pasty! Cornwall is also famous for its ‘eco-attitude' and you will find many nature reserves throughout the region, such as the Eden Project, which is only half an hour away by road.

Region
Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

This was one of the best self-catering homes we have had in several decades of holidays. It was very comfortable and well equipped, and it was good being close to the town and station but also to walk directly from the house into the countryside. We will have no hesitation in returning.
Mrs Pardoe

Our third visit and it was just as enjoyable. In a great location to explore Cornwall, we will be returning next year for sure.

The property was clean, had very comfortable beds and a lovely light airy feel. There was plenty of space and the property was in a good position, it had everything we needed. We would be happy to go there again.

December 2015
The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. The property is very spacious and is situated in a very nice area with good pubs, restaurants and shops in the surrounding area. The photos on the website do not do the cottage justice, the lounge area is very spacious, very relaxing and the decoration is all very modern and nicely set out. The amount of tourist information in the hallway in the property, such as walks for the area, places to visit, things to see, local information and maps is exceptionally helpful. We could not have picked a better property for our stay in Cornwall!
Mr Sawers
July 2015

This was a stunning property but then we've never been disappointed with Sykes properties. The location was great, so near to the station we went out on the train several times. The house was spacious and beautifully furnished and the owner very helpful.

June 2014
The cottage was of high quality in an excellent location. The fittings and furnishings were excellent with nice little additional touches - tea, coffee and milk on arrival. Although near the railway line, this did not cause any nuisance and in fact was an asset for exploring the region. We also like the easy access to the village with its convenient shops.
Mr Roddis

A very good central location for exploring Cornwall. The accommodation was very different and interesting and of first class quality.

Centrally situated which meant ideal for touring and site seeing. Lostwithiel as a town offered more than adequate facilities as a base.16 Brunel Quays was a private and spacious to enable more than one family to share and enjoy privacy. This allowed us to have an excellent family holiday with sufficient parking for two families.
Miss Rogers

We thought the property was extremely nice, as was the owner. It is situated in a pleasant town that offered all the facilities that we needed. It was also a useful base to go further afield. We will not be recommending it to friends and family as we want to keep it to ourselves.

We had a brilliant time, the property is extremely well located with many pretty villages and attractions close by. The owners were very welcoming and we really appreciated the added touches such as bubble bath and tea and coffee with hobnobs on arrival. The cottage was decorated to a very high standard situated in a lovely development right on the river. Lostwithiel was lovely, not too many tourists a generally fab place to go for a week!

The property is an ideal size and in an ideal location for a family holiday to Cornwall. Centrally placed, the beaches of Newquay are not far away, with attractions such as the Eden Project very close at hand. Lostwithiel itself is a quiet town, with all the amenities needed. This is our second year staying at Brunel Quays and we have already booked for next year!

The house was in pristine condition throughout. An excellent location with easy access to many attractions.
Mrs Green
July 2006
It is in a fantastic location to visit Cornwall. We were five miles from the Eden Project, less than an hour from Newquay and Padstow, and a short drive to Parr beach, which was fantastic for the children. The children loved watching the trains go by the house and had plenty of room to play. We also appreciated the extra touches in the house like the shower gel and bubble bath. The house also had a table full of leaflet for places to go and people had left suggestions for where to take children.
Mr Corbett
November 2006
Attractive outdoor area. Friendly neighbourhood - peaceful.
Mr Johnson
June 2011
Warm welcome and good location (central) for visiting places in Cornwall. Accommodation was clean and tidy.
Mr Mrs Warwick
May 2006
Although we had a bad week of weather we felt this in no way spoilt our holiday. The accommodation was wonderful in a very attractive location. We also found the owner to be very helpful and pleasant and we felt very welcomed into her home. The little extras provided were a really nice touch. We would definitely consider staying there again and heartily recommend the property to all. Good amenities were also part of the property.
Mr Barry

September 2006
The location - Lostwithiel is within easy driving distance of many of Cornwall's attractions including the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the beaches of Newquay and the lovely town of Fowey. The property was lovely - with plenty of room for our family to relax after a hard day at the beach or sightseeing! It was nicely furnished and equipped. We came home and immediately booked Brunel Quays again for two weeks next year.
Mrs Hartley
February 2006
This was our second visit to 16 Brunel Quays and we will be returning. The standard of accommodation is very high and the owner was very helpful. It is in a lovely location and our 3 year old son was thrilled to be near trains, we were thrilled that we couldn't hear them! It really did feel like home and we were sad to leave.
Mrs Dutfield
March 2005
Once again the accommodation standard was first class and spotlessly clean. There were 6 of us sharing and it was very roomy and comfortable. Lostwithiel was central for touring and not too built up. There were enough shops and a lovely local pub that served very good food. All in all we had a memorable holiday!
Mrs Thackray
November 2005
This has to be the best holiday home we have ever stayed in (and we've been self-catering for over 20 years). Superbly furnished and a lovely location.

The property had everything that we could possibly need, and the owner had taken time to add a few extras on our arrival - tea and biscuits, milk in the fridge etc. These little touches added to the welcome we felt when we arrived on our holiday. It really could not have been better appointed and was the nicest holiday home we have ever stayed in - a real pleasure!

July 2013
When we arrived at the property we were amazed at the size ... The photographs on the website do not really give a good indication of just how large the property is. It was a lovely touch to have tea, coffee, biscuits and milk waiting for us after a long journey. The cottage has everything needed for a lovely relaxing holiday and would be plenty big enough for seven people .. there were 3 adults in our party. The property is the only holiday cottage amongst residential homes, the neighbours are all very welcoming and friendly - one of our neighbours loaned us a spare parasol (the only thing missing in quite an extensive inventory in the cottage) when the weather was very hot as they were concerned we were not able to sit outside. The small courtyard garden at the back is a sun trap and a lovely place to sit with a glass of wine and a book and watch the occasional boat pass by. We travelled down by car but have only used our car once as the train service is excellent and very good value for money - the trains are very reliable and we have travelled somewhere every day. We did not really notice the sound of the trains much during our stay and the village is beautiful.
Mr Burgess
August 2005
Extremely high standard of accommodation with everything provided that you could possibly need. Beautiful located on edge of town by river. Nearby playground.

September 2015
Very well presented spacious house. High state of cleanliness. Fluffy white towels. If I'd known it was so near Lostwithiel station I'd have traveled there by train direct from London, so convenient. (There were some railway works going on at night which was a little disturbing to the general peace of the place, but that was not the owners fault.) The town is so nearby it's a 5 min walk if that, and there are plenty of shops, cafe's, pubs around. Central for most of the local attractions in surrounding areas. Had a great time.

I'm writing this review on our second day at this fabulous property and I can't praise it enough, it deserves 6 stars. The photos don't show how lovely it is we were met by the owner who gave us comprehensive instructions, and left us tea, milk & biscuits. The property is huge and very comfortably furnished with everything you'd need. There is a lovely area to sit out overlooking the river and although you hear the trains pass it's not intrusive. A short walk takes you into the town which has some nice shops and eateries. Another excellent rental from Sykes, we're never disappointed with their properties. I'm looking forward to the rest of our stay.

July 2014
Overall quality is very good excellent place to stay everything is there in the kitchen from washing machine, dishwasher, iron to all your utensils. Wifi is included as well. trains kept my son happy however they are not true intrusive. We stayed here as a family of 7 which included my parents and children the place is suprisingly big and spacious pictures do not do it justice. My only small gripe would be that it would be good to have a tv in one if the bedrooms as when you have a family this big not everyone wants to watch the same programs especially the children and teens but had a fantastic stay and would definatley recommend

This house is really well laid out, and plenty of room for 7 adults. The kitchen is well equipped and really clean. The only downside was that there weren't enough comfy seats in the living area, one of us had to sit on a dining chair. We got a murder/treasure hunt on-line and it was not too long and got you to tour around Lostwithiel.

We thought we were taking a risk by not staying near the coast but we are so glad we did. This house is an amazing place to stay with everything you could need. The photos just don't do it justice. I tried to take photos to show friends and family how lovely it is but couldn't quite get the feel of the place. It was the perfect place to stay. Maggie met us at the property and showed us how things work. We also had tea, coffee, milk and biscuits left for us. Lostwithiel is a lovely place to stay with some nice places to eat. I would recommend the fish and chips. Lostwithiel is ideally situated for exploring Cornwall. You have to stay here.

The lady was there to meet us and showed us around the cottage and explained where the shops and pubs where . There was tea coffee milk and biscuits there, so we could have a break before we unloaded the car .the cottage was very comfortable and it was nice to sit on the patio by the river , The location was perfect for the places we wanted to visit. The railway was close by if you didn't want to drive.

16 Brunel Quays was our base for four weeks in October. My husband is registered blind and we are both in our 70s. Our children and grandchildren came to stay for varying lengths of time and there is ample accommodation for 7. We found the connection with Brunel interesting, and the conversion very well done. We did not need to drive anywhere as all the amenities were so close. We even walked up to the castle although the final hill was steep. Lostwithiel is an interesting town, most of the shops are privately owned and sell superb local produce. The washing machine was great but the dryer was not very good.

Everything about the holiday accommodation was excellent. The only downside was the noise from the train station close by. The last train was at 11.30 pm and was very loud in the bedroom accommodation. The first train in the morning was 6/6.30 am and you don't really want to be woken at 6.30 on your holiday. That was the only time you noticed the noise of the train was late at night and early morning. Quite annoying and spoilt an otherwise excellent property. Plus we did ask about the trains before we rented the accommodation and were told that the noise would be minimal.

A modern spacious yet historical terraced conversion of one of Brunel's carriage sheds. As a group of elderly tourist's who wanted a base to explore all that this area of Cornwall has to offer then this property excelled. With milk, tea, coffee and biscuits awaiting our arrival to all mod appliances to hand and comfy beds for a good nights sleep we all enjoyed a welcome break. Within walking distance there are a variety of shops and pubs, all with very friendly staff, and we can recommend the food at the Royal Talbot, complete with real ale and a jazz band, when we dined. The adjacent railway is not intrusive, if anything more of a novelty with the length of the China Clay trains and hardly audible, but then we are all over 60! All in all we would recommend Brunel Quays and we look forward to re-visiting.

A charming and beautifully appointed house in an excellent location. The owner was welcoming and the house was very well equipped. Lostwithiel is a pleasant town with shops and restaurants in easy walking distance and centrally located for visiting the many places of interest in the area. We even enjoyed the trains going past the front of the house. a super place to stay.

The property was spotless and very well furnished with lots of facilities. We were made very welcome and our comfort considered at all times. Clear instructions for all appliances. The patio is a lovely place to sit and watch the wild life on the river. Lostwithiel itself is charming with great walks in all directions. The station is very closeby, making travel without the car easy.
