The town of Hay-on-Wye, famous for its many bookshops, is just 15 miles away. Nearby Hereford is an ancient town dating back to the 7th century and is steeped in history, while Offa's Dyke and the Wye Valley provide ample opportunity for walkers.

Region
Herefordshire offers visitors the chance to journey through lush green countryside, enjoying splendid black-and-white timbered villages, a magnificent cathedral city, a fairytale Georgian castle at Eastnor or books galore in famous Hay-on-Wye.

November 2015
The property was perfect for a large family gathering as it leant itself to being able to cater for 20 people sitting comfortably together both in the sitting room and the dining room which meant that the celebration meal supplied by the recommended caterer was really special and excellent value when considering no costs for drinks taxis etc. Made everything very special. From the initial conversation with the booking staff all the way through the process and Sykes will be the first site I look at for future bookings.

It was so grand and spacious - no one got on top of each other. The kitchen was very well equipped and the bedrooms were so sumptuous and comfortable. It was wonderful to stay in a beautifully restored large house and yet feel so comfortable and relaxed. All age groups were catered for, even down to the play room for the youngest 3 year old guest. I wish we could have stayed there for another few weeks as it just felt so good to be staying there. Our hosts looked after us so well.

September 2012
We first saw Abbey Dore on Country House Rescue on Channel 4, and were excited to see the end result of the family's hard work. We were not disappointed to say the least! They have done a lovely job restoring the 6 bedroom, 4 bathroom home and kept lots of its original features like the grand staircase, fireplaces, ceilings and floorboards. There is even a Grand Piano! The children loved the play room, and nobody could say they were bored! The surroundings are beautiful, with the stream along side the house and the large garden. We all had a lovely time and cant wait to go back.
Mrs Smith

We would definitely return if we were to have another family gathering like this. Everyone enjoyed it immensely!

The house was beautiful in a gorgeous setting. It was huge, which we loved, but felt very cosy and homely. The standard of cleanliness was exceptional. The furnishings were fantastic, well suited to such an old property. It was perfect for a group of 15 friends, but would be suited to a group of families. Children would love the games room, and the outdoor space. Would highly recommend.

The house itself was just perfect for our large family. We enjoyed the space, all the different sitting areas, having so many bathrooms - a real luxury. Although it is a grand house it felt very homely. We also appreciated the comfortable beds. It is in a very beautiful area which we found to be full of history and really interesting places to visit, and also had great walking. Also the table tennis was a great success!

The photos of the house do not do it justice, it was breathtaking. Ideal for 12 adults and 2 children for a family Ruby Wedding celebration. The house was tastefully restored, with all the mod cons as well. A truly beautiful experience and one which everyone wants to repeat!

June 2016
Was there for a week in June and had some amazing weather which meant that the kids could play every day in the garden while the adults enjoyed a beer or two. Bought a large paddling pool (for the kids) and that kept them entertained. The house is well equipped, but spent most of the time in the garden. Room are nice, nothing wrong with them, but you have to understand that this is an 'old' house so some doors don't quite close properly and some of the locks are a little difficult. Everything else was fine and really the weather made this 5 start - if it had rained all week I suspect that it would have been 4 start if I am honest There are the gardens next door, but it is 5GBP per person to go around, this is a little bit rich when you are renting the house!! It is also worth noting that a number of the photos on the website that are taken in the garden are taken from or show areas that are not actually part of the house grounds, but part of the accompanying garden that you have to pay 5GBP per adult to use... Other minor comments - some of the pots where a little worn - lighting in the living room was either really dim, or very bright - aga was a little hard to control, but thats just the aga, but when you are coking for 22 people!! - the garden furniture was a little worn - the round tables were a little flexible - on of the sun shades was broken - the big nice solid timber bench table was really dirty - but we mucked in and cleaned it up - there is an SAS training base at the bottom of the garden, which is not noticeable, apart from while we were there there seemed to be a bit of a dusk helicopter training exercise running nearly every night which broke the tranquil nature at around 10-11pm. To be honest this also a bit of a spectacle and didn't last too long.. Having said all of the above, the place was just what we wanted, the owner was very help, and there was a lovely large welcome cake that was really tasty, along with some biscuits - very nice. Also there was tea coffee and milk left by the owner, which is a really nice touch, along with lots of stuff in the pantry left over from other renters to kick start the provision at the beginning of the week. I would recommend if you are a large group, looking for easy week with a lovely big garden for the kids to play in

Sixteen of us (eight couples - neighbours, friends) decided to go to Abbey Dore for three days partly as a birthday celebration but just because we could! We've stayed in two other country houses but this was the most comfortable. We arrived to a home baked cake and some complimentary ciders, tea and coffee. Also a bottle of fizz to apologise for slightly reduced space in the dining room due to a repair to the ceiling which was pending, which we had been made aware of but was no problem. We all like to have our own bathroom and this house just about fitted the bill with two couples sharing but the bedrooms were so warm and comfortably furnished with wonderful comfy beds - good water pressure in the bathrooms - and lovely views. Downstairs there were plenty of rooms for us all to spread out and relax on sofas and read or watch TV. One huge sitting room with log burning stove and a grand piano, a smaller sitting room also with log burner, and the hall or even a children's playroom with a wii. There's wifi so we could keep in touch with emails and a hot tub which was used by some of the party. The kitchen complete with original blue AGA ( and a back up electric cooker) was extremely well equipped with plenty of pans, dishes, cutlery crockery and glasses etc. The dining room has a huge table which comfortably sat all of us . We collected fish and chips from nearby Ewyas Harold which were delicious and we self catered the rest of the time. It very much has the feel of a well loved family home and we felt it had a very welcoming ambience. We dealt with Clare one of the owners of the house (three siblings) who was delightful and brother Jules popped round the second day we were there to check if everything was ok. All in all a great weekend!

This was truly a luxurious holiday and well worth the stay. The home was so comfortable and magnificent. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of cutlery and crockery. The owners were on hand to deal with anything that we needed and left a basket of cakes and wine on the kitchen table for us to enjoy on arrival. It was wonderful to wake up and look over the fields. It was quiet and peaceful with the most amazing grounds to play games or just sit and enjoy the fresh air. The lounge was huge complete with grand piano with fresh windows opening to the outside. There was even a games room for the children complete with lots of toys and games. The bedrooms were absolutely beautiful and well decorated. All in all, it was perfect for a large group of people with enough room in the house for everyone to wander around and not feel on top of each other. There were lovely walks from the home along the road and the the main town of Hereford was not too far to drive. There was nothing that we did not like, everything was perfect with our stay and I wished we could have stayed longer.

My husband and I spent a weekend at Abbey Dore Court visiting members of our American family who had booked to stay there for two weeks. They were 22 in number including several babies and young children. The house catered for all the people admirably with room to spare. There were plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. The living rooms were spacious, the kitchen adequately equipped and the gardens lovely at this time of the year. We were really lucky with the weather and ate our breakfast overlooking the stream that runs alongside the house. All in all a great weekend in a lovely old house.

A large group of us stayed here for a long weekend in early December. The communication from Clare was friendly, prompt and helpful from the very start of the enquiry process all the way through to post-stay. The house is perfect for large groups. It is well kept has a huge living space, which meant we could all fit comfortably in the same room. There are PLENTY of bathrooms and many rooms were ensuite. A lovely bonus was the hot-tub outside. The house is private and we felt thoroughly at home there. So much so, that we will be looking to stay there again. A hassle-free, relaxing stay in a beautiful house in lovely grounds. Excellent all round and thoroughly recommended.

We booked abbey Dore for an adventure Fitness bootcamp and Claire and Jules were really helpful, letting us view the property beforehand and giving us advice on the best places to visit locally. When there were problems with the aGa, they were quick to let us know and come to an arrangement over the price. I was more than a little bit gutted to be arranging the bootcamp and not get the chance to relax in what is a beautifully decorated and well equipped property. Everyone who came loved it though. The highlight of the week for me was doing yoga in the stunning living room. Hoping to return with family or friends next time.

Good overall accommodation and garden. One complaint is the lack of wardrobe space for all the bedrooms except the master bedroom. Even if wardrobes were placed on the landings outside the bedrooms this would help.

January 2012
The owners were extremely helpful and dealt with any problems immediately. They put us in touch with people to provide special party food and were on hand to advise on other places to find what we needed. We would go there again, maybe in the summer, and explore further afield. Walks from the house great. Loved the big ballroom for a party and the massive family bedroom, plus the variety of spaces for everyone, especially for playing the wii. Problems with the odours in the dining room (and later the sitting room) meant we spent more time in the other rooms, and the kitchen.

It was a very spacious for the amount of people there. The young people enjoyed the hot tub. The bedrooms were very comfortable with plentiful hot water in the bathrooms.

Abbey Dore was a spacious, comfortable, attractive holiday house - space for a family of 17 to be together and space for us to be on our own when required. The garden offered space to sit and space for the children to play We could not have asked for more.
