Home to The Black Bull – a proper, old fashioned pub, serving quality food and real ale – the village is a welcoming place to return to following a day of walking, pony trekking or cycling. With the Pennine Way and other great cycle routes and Bridleways running nearby, it's easy to enjoy this stunning scenery, which boasts dramatic castles, surging rivers and beautiful forests. Those interested in the country's history are sure to enjoy a visit to one of the best preserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall, only a mile north of the village, and with an ongoing dig on the site of Vindolanda, it's easy to get in touch with the nation's past. If history isn't your cup of tea, then there is a regular train and bus service in to Newcastle and Carlisle, meaning that you can leave your car behind and enjoy the nightlife the big cities have to offer.
