Firstly, I've debated whether I should rate this as average or very good, there doesn't seem to be anything in between, its probably higher than average but for my time of life now, I wouldn't rate as VERY good. BUT, for groups without very small children I WOULD rate as very good. The childless people of our party would not have some of the same niggles as us :)
We'll start with the good, there are a lot of good points :-)
Its a beautiful location, exceptional views especially on a good clear day. There is plenty of seating for all guests (we've stayed in many places where there wasn't enough seating), all rooms are really big and spacious and there is plenty of storage space, in bedrooms, kitchen and other rooms. It is possibly the cleanest house I've ever stayed in, which for a property of this size is a feat in itself. There is plenty of parking, and some amazing pubs (Eagle & Child particularly) very close by. The owners are very friendly and helpful although I personally didn't deal with them but other members of the party did and praised their efforts.
Whilst we always takes toys to keep our kiddies entertained it was lovely to find a few toys, as most of us know, children always want to play with toys not their own (but please someone fix the snooker table :) )
The more negative points:-
Baby monitors do not work very well, two of the twin rooms (which is obviously where you'd put the young ones) are at the far end of the property, this is perhaps around 40 meters to the lounge or kitchen, this is virtually impossibly for most monitors (indoors, outdoors works differently), I tried 4 different makes (actually buying 2 new ones as the ones I did have was very old so thought it was their age, silly me lol)
The 2nd half of the property if the weather isn't kind, it is very cold, to be fair to the owners we didnt phone them to have the heating put on for longer, because the weather was so variable, but we had a couple of nights where the babies room dropped down to 16 deg which after him having a bath, bless he was freezing. However other nights it was as high as 22, it really varied with the outside temp (it was only 1 half of the house that was like this). The owners CANNOT be held responsible for the outside temp, but maybe an option to be able to put on some temporary heat if needed would be preferable.
Bath - A BIG majority of parents know that a lot of very young children are terrified of showers, so we for example, never book a property that doesn't advertise a bath. This property was no different. However, whilst there was a bath advertised, the bath has no taps, it took ages to fill the bath with a shower head, and getting the temperature right for the baby was almost impossible. This was a real irratation for me as the person that baths the children, bathtimes are frenetic enough without added irritations.
Note - Just advice to the owners, I ALWAYS take with me waterproof sheets (and spare sheets) for any beds my children sleep in 'just in case'. None of the beds had waterproof sheets, these can be bought really cheaply and these days aren't the rustly ones so they could be put on without anyone knowing. I'd imagine not many parents remember to take waterproof items.
Overall a lovely house, great location. Just wasn't perfect for us 4 out of the whole party (2 adults and 2 young children)
