Crych Du description

Holiday home
Crych Du sits beside the banks of the River Wye in the pretty Wye Valley, surrounded by the spectacular Cambrian Mountains. Splendid views can be seen in every direction, and the superb walking and cycling opportunities of the Wye Valley Walk and the National Cycle Track are nearby. The cottage has great charm and character and features two bedrooms, a sitting room with a wood burning stove, a kitchen with Rayburn, and exposed beams and oak flooring throughout. The conservatory offers magnificent mountain and river views, and there is private trout and salmon fishing available at the end of the garden for those who love fishing. Stunning countryside and wonderful wildlife watching are all on your doorstep in this gorgeous holiday retreat.

Area
The beautiful countryside between Builth Wells and Rhayader is home to the small village of Llanwrthwl. The village has just one shop, but the bustling market town of Rhayader with its selection of unusual little shops, eateries, pubs, leisure complex, and cycle hire is 2.5 miles away. Pony trekking is available in the area, and beautiful Red Kites can also be observed at a feeding station created for the birds. The fantastic Elan Valley Lakes are close and waiting to be discovered, or visit Builth Wells, where the annual Royal Welsh Show is held. Here you will find a great variety of shops, tea rooms, pubs, year-round craft shows and exhibitions.

Region
Famous for its choirs, stunning mountain ranges and beautiful valleys, this wonderful country has something for everyone. From Snowdonia in North Wales to the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast in the South.

Where do you start! The views and location were simply stunning, the cottage was perfect for the setting and the abundant wildlife was a joy to watch all day. We had intended to tour about but didn't want to leave. The owners were very helpful and friendly. Bliss. Will definitely go back.

This accommodation is beautiful and was way above my expectations, the pictures seen online do not do justice to this property. It is extremely well maintained and there is everything there that you could possibly need or want for your stay. The location is idyllic, giving you tranquillity and privacy with an abundance of wildlife to view and enjoy. The owners are friendly and helpful and are very unobtrusive at all times. We are most definitely planning a return visit.

Crych Du is a great place to stay. The cottage itself is very comfortable and well equipped. Add to that the location which is simply stunning, sitting as it does in a splendid isolation in the beautiful Wye Valley with the river literally at the bottom of the garden. Fly fishing for salmon, wild brown trout and grayling right on the doorstep. Wonderful. Needless to say that in such a spot the local wildlife is also pretty amazing.

We loved the general ambiance of the place. It was way off the beaten track and has an excellent garden in stunning scenery running down to the River Wye.

Crych Du is a great place for a quiet and relaxing holiday. Within a stones throw of the River Wye, the location is secluded but close enough to Rhayader for the convenience of shopping and good local amenities. Facilities at the cottage are excellent in all aspects. This is one holiday home that we will visit again and again.

The cottage is in the perfect position with the River Wye at the end of the garden. It is peaceful and surrounded by fields and hills, with plenty of varied walks from the door or nearby. We were delighted to watch otters in the river, too. The accommodation is very good, especially the sun room. Can't fault it.

The setting, ie: peaceful, scenery, The cottage is the best we have stayed in for a long time. The owners were polite, friendly and helpful. They did not intrude on our holiday but we knew if we needed anything they were there to help.

A really lovely cottage in a wonderful away-from-it-all position. Very well equipped and obviously well maintained. A real joy to stay there. We really loved the fact that we could just walk down the garden and onto the river bank.

The cottage was everything we hoped it would be and a lot more. The setting is amazing, sandwiched as it is between high hills and yet not hemmed in. The only other buildings in sight are barns. The garden dips down at the end giving a view of the River Wye. We felt at home as soon as we stepped into the cottage. Having a conservatory is a real bonus as you can enjoy the views even if the weather is bad. We were fortunate in having fantastic weather. We spent a lot of time in the garden, enjoying watching the birds, some that we have never seen before at home. We arrived needing a rest and left (with great reluctance) feeling refreshed. We are not physically able to walk but there is beautiful scenery in every direction which makes driving around a real pleasure - if you can tear yourself away from the cottage that is!!

Probably the best appointed and situated cottage we have had. The conservatory was a warm god send when it rained as you could relax and still feel like you were outdoors. Nice to have the river running by at the bottom of the garden. So much to do and see in the area.

Wonderful location with a view of the river Wye. Peace and quiet. Able to walk onto the hills or along the river straight from the cottage - no need to drive every day. Cosy and comfortable cottage. Not far from the main A470 for when we did need to get out and about.

Everything about Crych Du is simply first class. The cottage is spotless and spacious. The kitchen/dining area is well planned and really well equipped. The cottage is in a wonderful position, situated close close to the River Wye, and in an area abounding with wildlife. A real find for any nature lover, and especially one who likes to cast a fly as the river holds some good Trout and Grayling. The owners are very friendly and helpful.

July 2012
Superb situation and views, well kept garden and lawn, good heating, and the conservatory enabled us to watch the birds at the feeding table. We liked the river walks from bottom of garden, the squirrel, the brown hare, the woodpecker, nuthatches and numerous other birds which were constant visitors. Our very own live edition of Nature Watch! Not to mention the little flock of rare breed hens.

The property had lovely views and a walk along the river from the bottom of the garden. There was food provided to feed a wide variety of birds that visited the table and the horses in the paddocks around the house. It was lovely!

October 2011
Wonderful cottage set in an idyllic isolated setting. We had a log fire every night which was great at the end of October. Plenty of walks from the property and the Elan Valley which was close by was beautiful. Helpful owners who were there if you needed them but left you to enjoy the cottage as if it were your own.

The setting for this cottage was stunning. With breathtaking views and wildlife literally on your doorstep. Waking up here and watching the sun come up over the mountains and glinting through the river mist would be beautiful at anytime of year. The cottage was warm, comfy and cosy to come back to after a days walking or biking. The owners were most helpful, informative and friendly. The holiday could not have been more perfect.

Staying at Crych Du made for a very pleasurable time and we really valued the comfort of the house and the high quality of furniture and furnishings. I am a keen cook and I was delighted with the standard of kitchen utensils which far surpass many other properties I have stayed in. The fire was wonderful in the living room and I just wish I could have stayed longer in order to enjoy the surrounding location and the garden area!

August 2010
This is one of the best holidays we have ever had. For total peacefulness and relaxation it is ideal. The river was literally 21 steps away from the conservatory (yes, hubby counted!). I cannot recommend this cottage more highly - the owners are incredibly friendly and helpful and the standard of the cottage is excellent. Everything had been thought of to make the cottage a home from home. We absolutely loved the place. The wildlife was amazing. On our first morning we were rewarded with two sightings of a wild otter - once, no more than 10 feet away from us. Another day a peregrine landed on the patio table chasing a bird! Red Kites, butterflies and birds were abundant and my husband had the best river fishing ever. The wood burner was lovely on the chilly evenings - it truly was a marvellous holiday.

The best equipped self catering cottage we have been to - the cooking facilities were great. The position of the cottage was idyllic. Just sitting in the conservatory watching the river flow by and the kites and buzzards flying over was so relaxing - very peaceful. A great place to chill out.

We can't rate this holiday rental enough.... Totally idyllic setting, great accommodation and really friendly and helpful owners. Nothing is too much trouble. We were lucky to see an otter fishing for his breakfast in the river wye at the bottom of the garden. There are so many birds can't name them all but a few were woodpeckers, wood hatch, great tits etc One thing I will say is the photos of the cottage really don't do it justice it really is a wonderful place to stay inside and out We absolutely loved our stay and are already looking to see when we can go back :)

A very comfortable cottage right on the banks of the River Wye, only a short walk from Rhyader. The whole area around is spectacular, with plenty of gentle walks or for the more adventurous plenty of hills.

A friend and I arrived for our holiday and were greeted, taken to the property, shown around and made very welcome by the owners. The cottage was all on one level with comfortable beds, good bathroom, cosy tv room, lovely conservatory, well equiped kitchen, dining area and overall very clean. There was also an outdoor table with chairs and a bench sited under a tree near the river. The location was excellent with fields surrounding the cottage and with a river walk at the bottom of the site. The owners ot the cottage kept 2 horses in the fields attached to the cottage. When one of them visited the horses, usually daily, we chatted and this made us feel they were readily available should we need them. There was a road we could hear which was the other side of the river and through some trees but it wasn't intrusive. This was the a470 and it was a short drive to reach it which gave us the opportunity to visit this area of Wales. We loved the variety of birds seen at the property and sitting in the conservatory for breakfast was a must as we saw red kites daily. We would love to go back again as it was the perfect holiday home for our needs and we didn't want to leave.

On first entering the property and the area we new that we had made the best of choice. We found the cottage super clean and the facilities first class. Wildlife was a wonder to watch. We even had a foal born in the next field which was pure magic. The owners were there if needed but never interfered. I would highly recommend this holiday to everyone.

I have recently returned from a week spent at Crych Du, If you like cosy cottages, the countryside and don't have children under 14 or pets, then this is the cottage for you, it exceeded my expectations ten fold. The cottage its self is immaculate and extremely well equipped with everything you could possibly need for your stay and is set in spectacular surroundings, the river is at the bottom of the garden and can be easily seen from the conservatory, which is the room we used the most, from here you catch sight of a variety of wildlife, you also have the enjoyment of the owners Appenzeller Spitzhauben Chickens roaming freely, extremely pretty birds, you also have a variety of wild birds to watch, you are also left a supply of bird seed to place on the different bird tables that are placed around. On our arrival we had a very warm welcome from our host who took us to the cottage and showed us around, during our stay we were lucky enough to have four ponies grazing in the paddock next to the cottage and although the owners came twice a day to tend to the ponies they were always extremely unobtrusive, having said that they are also very approachable and helpful. Our stay was delightful and I can't sing the praises of this holiday cottage enough we shall most definitely looking at a return visit, an extremely relaxing holiday, walks from the door, a few miles by car takes you to the beautiful Elan Valley and I strongly recommend a trip off to Abergwesyn common which is truly spectacular, from here you can drive up the Devils Staircase and on to the Llyn Brianne dam and reservoir, believe me you will not be disappointed. I read on the booking site that the pictures do not do justice to this property, and they really don't..

The other reviews say it all really. Crych Du is in an idyllic setting and it's a lovely property. Apart from the owners occasionally coming to feed their hens, horse, sheep etc you could be at the cottage for a week and not see another soul if you didn't go out to enjoy the spectacular Elan Valley and other places in the area. There's even a Shakespeare theatre! (Check out Willow Globe and if you get chance, go there during the day as well and you may be lucky enough to get the full tour. We did!). If I had to find a fault with the property it would be the inefficient shower. Crych Du's water comes from a bore-hole and the flow is not adequate enough for the electric shower hence the water alternates between scalding hot and luke-warm. A small inconvenience compared with the benefits of this wonderful place.

From the minute we drove down the single track lane on the floor of the valley, we were enchanted by our surroundings. Ancient oak trees and moss covered rocks to our left, the wide tubbling river and craggy mountains to our right. The barn conversion was nestled on the valley floor and looked welcoming after a long journey. On entering, it certainly had the 'wow' factor. The conservatory, where we were to spend most of our time indoors was warm and spacious, with incredible views. Inside there was everything we could need. It was warm and cosy and the beds were very comfortable after along day's walking or cycling. The walking and cycling was straight from the door, so barely had to use the car! Waking up at sunrise, watching the river mist rising gently up the valley to reveal sun and blue sky above the peak was a sight to behold and quite other-worldly. The bird and animal life literally on your doorstep was intriguing, we spent hours following the river and watching the wildlife which depended on it. Evenings were beautiful and as the sun went down it was relaxing to sit in the lovely little hidden courtyard garden with a glass of local wine. When it became chilly, time could be spent reading a book beside the logburner, then a cup of cocoa and out to watch the vast dark skies and bright stars undulled by light pollution. Bliss!

A real get away from it all cottage. Beautiful scenery - surrounded by hills and the river Wye at the bottom of the garden - just sheep, horses and chickens for neighbours. Bird watchers paradise - kites and buzzards galore. Highlight was a very cooperative kingfisher who sat on a branch eating his fish dinner just like you see on TV! Cottage was very well equipped - especially the kitchen. Beds comfortable. Owners had thought of everything you could possibly want. Rhyader handy for shopping. Lovely walkiing area either directly from the cottage, or a short drive away. Only one request: Please can the owners get another rocking chair for the conservatory as we had to fight over the sole one there. Nothing so relaxing as rocking gently looking at the view and sipping wine.
