Daykin Cottage description

Situated in the quiet village of Low Etherley directly opposite the village cricket club, Daykin Cottage is the ideal location for guests wanting to relax, unwind and really explore this beautiful part of County Durham. Perfect for walkers, guests will find many established public footpaths that wind their way through County Durham and the Weardale Valley. This semi-detached cottage is full of character and charm. On the ground floor, the property boasts up-to-date appliances whilst still retaining much of its original beauty – the kitchen is well-equipped with all necessary amenities, and there’s a homely, traditional ambience emanating from the living and dining rooms, owing to their exposed beams and electric coal-effect fires.

Perfect for guests wanting to leave the car behind, the closest pub is within easy walking distance and there is a variety of supermarkets, shops and restaurants all just 3 miles away in Bishop Auckland. Cyclists, ramblers and leisurely walkers won’t be disappointed with the area’s network of walks and cycle paths for all ability levels. Hamsterley Forest is only 3 miles and is a delightful 2000-hectare site for walking, the Gruffalo Trail in particular is not to be missed, and there are plenty of perfect picnic spots along the way. It’s not just walkers who are catered for in the region, history buffs are often drawn to Escomb, home to the earliest Saxon Church in Britain. In Witton-le-Wear, Witton Castle offers fly fishing, a bird sanctuary, beautiful grounds and an historic castle. Soon to appear in Bishop Auckland is the Kynren Eleven Arches, a colossal open-air spectacle regarding 2000 years of English history, all rolled in to one action-packed night that’s certainly not to be missed! The thriving market town of Barnard Castle, 12 miles, is a most popular destination with holiday goers, due to its weekly farmers’ market, some super local pubs, restaurants and shops. For nature lovers, Raby Castle can also be reached within a short drive. Its deer herd numbers over 200, which wanders freely around the grounds in their natural habitat. The village of Staindrop is only 7 miles away and lies just next to Raby Castle. Featuring tea shops, cafés and a local family butcher, Staindrop is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and lies near to the nature reserve of Low Barns and Auckland Castle.
Head to the cathedral city of Durham for a day. This ancient city continues to thrive, thanks to its teeming student population. From the cottage it’s just a 20-minute drive, and popular attractions include the Lumiere Festival, jazz festival, book week, arts week, the theatre, many designer boutiques and shops, not to mention its world-renowned castle and cathedral.
