The village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village consists of a mixture of stone cottages and some new development housing. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330 metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafés, cater well for holidaymakers. There is also the old school, now converted into the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum. Around the village are several interesting walks and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside around, especially in the summer months when the moors turn purple with blooming heather.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

The cottage overall was very nice and the shower in particular was fabulous. The property was in an ideal location for us and we will stay again. The owners were friendly and on hand as needed. They were really happy for our children to use all the facilities and very easy going.

Very friendly welcome from the owner and there was a relaxed atmosphere while we were there. We thought that the property conversion was really well done and the location was excellent for visiting the North Yorkshire area.

A fantastic holiday made particularly special by the warm welcome and helpful and friendly attitude of the owners. We were made to feel like family visiting rather than guests. Extremely dog friendly - even had a doggie shower in the stable! A great location, amazing people, definitely on the cards for a return visit.

The views were stunning and it was very quiet. The cottage was lovely and the farmer was more than happy to help and give us advice on restaurants etc.

We loved our holiday in this beautiful cottage, the location and surrounding area were perfect for me and my family. And the fact that they allow dogs is great, we have a boarder Collie who also loved it. My children loved the beach, so the fact that Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay were nearby was a big plus. We would definitely return to this cottage and would strongly recommend.
