Hen Aelwyd Yr Urdd Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
Hen Aelwyd Yr Urdd was originally built over a hundred years ago and has been sympathetically converted to offer accommodation for up to 2 people; a haven for couples looking to get away from it all. Much of its original character has been preserved through exposed beams, an inglenook fireplace and an open fire. There is parking available, and some local amenities are only a short walk away. The cottage is perfectly situated for access to other attractions, such as the North-West Welsh coast and nearby caves.

Area
Llan Ffestiniog is a picturesque village in Gwynedd, just 3 miles south of Blaenau Ffestiniog, in North Wales. The village itself is made up of rows of dark stone and slate-roofed houses. There are a few shops and chapels, but it is the dramatic scenery that really stands out; to the east there are the rolling moor-lands of the Migneint, whilst to the south and west is the beautiful Vale of Ffestiniog, a valley of thick woodland that plays host to a number of bubbling rivers and green meadows. Attractions near the village include the Rhaesdr Cynfal waterfalls and the remains of the Tomen-y-Mûr Roman fort and amphitheatre. The Cynfal waterfalls are part of the Ceunant Cynfal Nature Reserve. There is a large pillar shaped rock above the falls, known as Huw Llwyd's pulpit, named after a 17th century wizard or preacher. The Nature Reserve is Site of Scientific Importance, housing many animals and plants that can only survive where there are old trees and a moist atmosphere.

Region
Famous for its choirs, stunning mountain ranges and beautiful valleys, this wonderful country has something for everyone. From Snowdonia in North Wales to the Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast in the South.

We had a wonderful stay in this delightful little cottage. We would certainly recommend it to friends and family. Their folder was also filled with everything you needed to know about the local area, from the local pub and the shop, even the local takeaway as well as things to do in the area. A lot of thought has gone into this cottage to make it a wonderful stay for anyone who goes there.

The cottage was lovely and set in an ideal location. On arrival we found gifts and the cottage was well equipped and felt cosy. There are lots of walks in and around the village and from a short drive away. We were lucky to catch some of the late September sun so we also enjoyed trips to the coast, North, West and Angelsey, which are also only a short drive away. Portmeirion and Betws y Coed are also well worth a visit.

The house is little but of good quality. It lays in a nice silent road in the middle of walking ways and nature. It is clean and decorated lovely. The bathroom looks brand new. Blaneau is easy to go to and has several places to eat and eat good. A lot of attractions are available. There is a map with useful information in and there are also some maps for walking.

November 2010
The cottage was very cosy. We had some wild weather but we felt very snug, not just because of the lovely multi-fuel stove but also because of the comfortable furnishings and warm colour schemes. We appreciated the amount of thought that had been put into supplying everything we might need and more besides - lots of nice welcoming touches and the wine and chocolates were yummy! We also liked the information folder. The owners' detailed personal recommendations about local attractions and facilities were so much friendlier than the usual basic bundle of leaflets and not much else. p.s. Someone in the comments on the website mentioned the bed being creaky but it wasn't at all!

What can I say? To start with, Snowdonia is a stunning area and the cottage was lovely. On arrival it was very clean and there was a bottle of wine and even some sweet if we had some kids knocking on the door, hence Halloween. It is a very peaceful area and the cottage, with its wood burning fireplace, was warm and cosy. It is obvious the owners do put their heart and soul in making it the perfect place to stay at.

Fantastic little cottage! Small but yet all you need for a couple. Very cosy & so well equipped.Very much a home from home feeling in this place. Lots of rental places I stayed in lack warmth and fine detail. This place was so well thought of. Felt like a lot of pride has been taken in it. It had personality. The decor was tasteful and had lovely nick nacks that added to the homely feeling. The kitchen was very well equipped has everything you need. The place was spotless when we arrived. Communication was great from the owners! Arrived to a cake & a bottle of wine which was fab especially with the bargain price we got! Great log burner. Fantastic welcome & info pack..had all the information you could ever need. (wish Id of known - I did my research before I arrived! turned out it was all in there!) There are also clear instructions for things to use in the cottage. Few games to play & books upstairs also an ipod dock. Can not praise it enough. The owners have thought of everything. Its the small things that make all the difference. Lovely paintings on the walls. Think some are by the owners father. It must be the artistic flare that has helped the owner make the most of the space & decorated it so tastefuly & homely. (lovely hints of red!) Great loacation for north wales! Plenty to see and do.Very peaceful location & somewhere you dont mind staying in if its raining! Loved it. Thank you!

we stayed in this charming one bed cottage for a week and it was lovely. on arrival we were welcomed with a bottle of red wine and a welsh cake which was greatly appreciated. every Little detail was thought of, milk in the fridge a good supply of coffee and tea bags also a selection of fruit teas and hot chocolates. The welcome folder had lots of info about the area and things to do and places to visit along with manuals for the log burner and all kitchen equipment. The bed was super comfy and the room was cozy and well decorated. The open plan aspect of the lounge kitchen was so nice and set out superbly everything was to hand and we settled in straight away. the local pub was welcoming and the people at the shop and post office were helpful and very friendly. We honestly cannot fault this cozy romantic getaway and cannot wait to stay again!

We arrived in the evening and found a very charming cottage with beams and a wood burning fire. The owners had left some lovely welcoming gifts, birthday card, bottle of wine. The cottage was very clean and a great location for walking in the area. A lovely cottage for a quiet, relaxing break for two.

Place was excellent and very clean. Parking not so good, and pity there was no eating places or pubs in the village, I think we should have been told this in advance.

Had all mod cons you could have in the cottage, very nice break that me and my partner had back in July, although we had some noise from the yard opposite that would sometimes wake us up in the morning when we wanted to have lie-in and also found not being able to park our car near to the cottage was a disadvantage due to the fact there was a slope in the road going on to the main road. We also had trouble with the flushing of the toilet as it took 7 to 8 minutes to re-flush if your partner had an urgent use for it

Arrived to find a lovely bottle of wine, chocolate and biscuits waiting for us! Lovely after a long trip from Oxfordshire. We had a lovely week, the log burner kept us cosy (even in July it was chilly!) The only thing that we had any kind of gripe about was the that the bed was very creaky and as soon as either one of us moved, the creaking was so bad that the other woke up! We also heard a few 'bumps in the night' which we couldn't explain but these noises weren't alarming just strange. Kind of added to the charm of the place. The weather was rubbish so it was lovely to return in the evening to Hen aelwyd Yr Urdd. Would love to return one day and will recommend to friends, thanks...

This is wonderful little cottage and is great value for money. Although the village has few facilities Blaenau is a stones throw away and has most things. It is close to all the wonderful areas and attractions of Snowdonia including the coast. Highly recommended.

Hen Aelwyd Yr Urdd is small but perfect for a quiet, romantic getaway for a couple. It's clean, fresh and neat, attractively and comfortably furnished and decorated (including a non-creaky bed, contrary to the experiences of a former guest!), and it's well equipped not only with a good range of utensils and appliances to make fending for yourself trouble free but also with lots of thoughtful little touches that make you feel very welcome. We found it lovely and warm even through the gales we had while there; the radiators were good but you didn't need them on once you got the very efficient multi-fuel stove going - toasty! It's easy to use and Angie and Rich supply a start-up supply of fuel enough to last for a couple of evenings. There's a decent choice of novels, games and DVDs for evenings in, as well as guide books and a folder with the hosts' friendly, personal recommendations and advice for making the most of your holiday. Llan Ffestiniog is a very pleasant village surrounded by glorious countryside with lovely walks, short and long, right from the door. It's also in easy reach by car or public transport of other beauty spots and places of interest. The wee village shop is good for basics, sells fuel suitable for the stove, and is open till seven most evenings but you'll probably need to bring in some supplies, though don't go mad with the frozen foodstuffs as there's only the icebox in the fridge to keep them in. One downside to the village is that there's not much in the way of nightlife but the locals, whom we found very friendly, are planning to re-open the village pub in the very near future, and Blaenau Ffestiniog has pubs and places to eat out and is just three miles up the road.

Our stay was great from start to finish. The description of the property was accurate and the directions very good. This is a lovingly cared for property and the owners took great care in welcoming guests and providing information about the property and places to visit. We most liked the comfort the property provided. The distance from Snowdonia was the only disadvantage but that did not spoil our holiday.

Small compact cottage that is tastefully decorated and contained everything you could possibly need; along with welcoming bottle of wine and chocolates. The location was a little off the beaten track but made the perfect base for exploring Snowdonia and the local area. Unfortunately the local pub had closed which means a bit of a drive if you want eat out in the evening but the food was good wherever we ate. We particularly recommend the Grapes Hotel in Maentwrog and the Indian Restaurant in Blaenau Ffestiniog (eat in or take away).

We had a wonderful time at this cottage, which started with the welcome gifts left by the owners - wine, Welsh cakes, a heart balloon and card. The log burning stove and the comfort of the cottage made it the perfect romantic getaway. The local area was very scenic and also accessible to Snowdonia tourist attractions. The owners had left plenty of information on both the cottage and on the local area for our use. A definite on our 'must visit again' list.

The cottage was really well stocked and we really needn't have bothered taking all the bits and pieces we thought we would need as they had already been provided.
