High Kingthorpe Lodge description

This Scandinavian lodge nestles in amongst private woodland with views towards the steam railway and glimpses of the puffing steam engines can be seen. Peacefully located just a short drive from the historic market town of Pickering, the lodge is an ideal base from which to explore both the North York Moors, the Heritage coast of Yorkshire and the North Yorkshire Wolds. Pickering is home to the steam train (Hogwarts Express) and an 18 mile journey through the glorious Esk Valley brings you into the Heartbeat villages of Goathland and Grosmont. Here you can experience some true Yorkshire hospitality with tea rooms and inns serving delicious Yorkshire cuisine. The Heartbeat experience is still very much alive in Goathland itself. It’s worth mentioning that there are some delightful walks around this area with the Historic Rail Trail and treks up to different waterfalls, Mallyan Spout and Thomason Foss are a must.

The ancient sea port of Whitby is some 18 miles drive across the moors, home to the ancient abbey ruins and known for its connections with Captain James Cook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. There is a three mile stretch of sandy beach with fishing and whale spotting trips from the harbour, and some of the best fish and chips can be enjoyed at an award winning fish restaurant. A stroll around the cobbled streets reveals quaint little fishing cottages tucked away down the alleyways and ginnels. There are antique and curios shops to explore, art galleries and museums all worth a visit. Further to the south there is Scarborough, Britain’s first seaside resort. Here you can find a town centre offering an eclectic mix of shops, and a cliff lift to take you to the south bay and a gentle stroll brings you to the north bay overlooked by the castle ruins.

Golfers will find an 18 hole golf course in Kirkby Moorside, nine miles, and a pitch and putt green on the outskirts of Pickering, three miles. The fishing lake in Pickering is packed with trout and you are guaranteed a catch for supper. Pickering hosts a weekly market and many festivals throughout the season including the Steam Engine Rally, a music festival and the unforgettable war weekend in October. Historic homes, halls and castles abound in this area with Castle Howard, film set of Brideshead Revisited, in Malton, Duncomb Hall and Gardens in Helmsley and Sewerby Hall and Gardens all just a short drive.
