Hillside Coastal Cottage description

Holiday home
Situated in the historic village of Dunvegan on the beautiful Isle of Skye, this property is a charming detached, stone-built location. This lovely home-from-home also provides a fitted kitchen, separate dining room and a lounge with electric fire for colder evenings. Set in glorious scenery, the property also comes with a secluded garden, ideal for ball games or barbecues. The town of Portree and its local amenities is within easy driving distance, as are the local attractions of Dunvegan Castle, making this a wonderful base from which to explore this glorious part of the Highlands.

Set in the north-west of the Isle of Skye, the village of Dunvegan blends a mixture of traditional stone and modern houses as well as a wide selection of shops and hotels. The village is home to the Clan Macleod and just a mile from the village is Dunvegan Castle. The Macleod family have occupied the building since the 13th Century and apparently had dealings with the ‘wee folk' at the Fairy Bridge. The Cuillin Mountains are also in the near vicinity and are full of fantastic rock forms and pinnacles, making them a favourite amongst climbers the world over. The island is full of other attractions, such as the Aros Centre which hosts a programme of concerts, theatre and cinema and the town of Portree, set around a natural harbour, and boasting an excellent range of shops, hotels and restaurants.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Oil central heating with electric fire in sitting room. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine, TV with Freeview, DVD, CD/radio, WiFi, small selection of books, games and DVDs. Fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot, stairgate and highchair on request. Off road parking for 2 cars. Mature, lawned garden with furniture. Sorry, no pets and no smoking. Hillside, Dunvegan proved to be an excellent base for us. The cottage was welcoming, lovely and warm, had plenty of hot water and was well equipped. In a nice quiet location very close to the village amenities. Although a long drive to reach, it was through fantastic scenery, and it was suitably located for the interesting places we wanted to visit and walks we hoped to do. The cottage was so very comfortable we didn't want to leave when our holiday was over! We're already planning our next trip!

The cottage was very cosy and comfortable, and furnished with everything we needed for a predominantly self-catering holiday. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and made the arrangements for arrival nice and simple. Dunvegan was a great base for exploring the North and the middle of Skye, and provided everything we needed including a lovely restaurant within walking distance (The Old Schoolhouse).

We had a wonderful holiday touring the island and walking. We saw several of the key sights, including The Quiraing, the Old Man of Storr, the lighthouse at Neist Point where we saw a basking shark, and the coral beach. We also took a boat to the Cuillin Hills and saw seals. The weather was not great, but we had a fantastic house to return to and dry things out and get warm at the end of the day.
Mr Carpenter

The cottage location was ideal, peaceful setting but within walking distance of the shops and pub. The owners lived next door and were very friendly, which was useful if we needed anything but they didn't intrude on our holiday.

August 2008
Hillside is a lovely cottage in a great location. The scenery is fantastic and Dunvegan is a perfect base to explore its castle, Stein, Portree, Talisker, Neist Point, Glen Brittle and our favorite Quiraing. So much to see and do, and not enough time!!!
May 2016
We stayed at Hillside for a friend's wedding at Dunvegan castle. The cottage is well equipped and the friendly owner has a house at the side would come a visit us regularly to ask if we need anything. Just love the cottage!!!
August 2016
We stayed at Hillside for the week in July. Morag was there to greet us on arrival and she and John popped over occasionally to check that everything was OK. There was tea, coffee, milk biscuits and shortbread there when we arrived. The cottage is quaint but very roomy and tastefully decorated and furnished. There are plenty of games, DVDs and books for if the weather is bad! There is a lot of garden and lovely views - very nice to sit out in the sun and look across to McLeod'sTables. Just across the road and you are on the moor with the church ruins and Millennium Stone. There is also a bus-stop where you can catch the bus to Portree. We also drove down to Ergol for the boat-trip to see the seals. We found the wi-fi very handy as the Vodafone signal there is not very good. Dunvegan is a lovely village on the loch. There is a well-stocked village shop and plenty of places to dine during the day. For food in the evenings, we enjoyed The Old School House twice. There is also the Dunvegan Hotel and Cellar Bar, where we went for drinks and also the Waterside Cafe Bistro which opens during the day and early evening, with an outside seating area. It is not far to Dunvegan Castle and a little further on to the fabulous Coral Beach at Claigan with crystal clear water and where plenty of seals are to be seen and the cattle graze on the beach!.
Mrs Panigel
August 2007
Dunvegan is a marvellous place and we were pleased to invite French friends we met on Skye and have tea at our cottage! Nice view with sheep, so quiet and peaceful.
September 2015
Dunvegan is a great base for a visit to Skye. It's quieter than Portree and offers beautiful scenary and several special attractions including Dunvegan Castle and Coral Beach. There are nice local walks through the village and along the Two Churches trail. The cottage is located on the outskirts of town and just a few minutes walk to the sea and amenities. In Dunvegan there is a well-stocked convenience store, a garage, a post office, several good tea shops and restaurants, and the oldest bakery in Skye. The cottage itself exceeded our expectations. It was clean and well-furnished with sufficient space for our family of five which included two teenagers. The only conflict between the kids was over who got to stay in the small bedroom which offered the kind of special, tucked away space that kids love. The landlords who live next door are gracious and helpful hosts. Great effort is taken to help guests feel welcome and comfortable in their holiday home. We highly recommend the cottage which is now among our favourite self-catering properties that we have stayed in the UK. Visitors from North America should keep in mind that like many UK properties there is no dryer. We expected this to be an issue when wet weather inevitably hit, but it wasn't a problem. There is a washing line in the backyard and plenty of clothes pins are provided along with a drying rack that is stored in the cupboard. The cottage was warm and clothes dried quickly. Visitors to the cottage can get their wi-fi fix by travelling to Portree where free wi-fi is available at the visitor centre. Free wi-fi access on Skye was not as prevalent in coffee shops and tearooms as we are accustomed to. This should not deter visitors from staying at this lovely cottage nor from choosing Skye and specifically Dunvegan as a holiday destination. We had no trouble keeping the kids busy in the evenings with the cottages good stock of books, movies, and board games. Skye offered us all a well-needed break from the constant connections to technology that have become the norm and introduced the children to the experience of island life.
June 2014
Hillside cottage is in a great spot, if the weather permits you will see lovely sunsets. There were 4 adults in our group and the cottage was well equipped, comfortable and warm - it contained everything we needed. The welcome from the owner was lovely with fresh flowers, tea, coffee and shortbread waiting for us. The owners live next door, they don't pester you at all but it's nice to know they are close by. The information folder provided in the cottage was invaluable....during our week long stay we managed to see all the main attractions: Loch Coruisk, Talisker Bay beach, Neist Point lighthouse, Coral Beach, the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr and Dunvegan Castle.

April 2012
This cottage has everything we needed and was lovely and warm. The location was just right, not too far from everything in the North of the island. the owners live in the cottage next door and a are friendly and helpful, even being able to lend my son a phone charger, as his had broken. The restaurants nearby serve delicious food, so it is easy to eat out if you want a rest from self catering. We had a very relaxing holiday here and would certainly book again.

July 2013
This is a lovely cottage with lovely views and peaceful setting. The accomodation was clean, spacious and well equipped. The owners live in a seperate cottage behind but after the initial meet & greet unless you have any questions, you have total privacy. That said, they are a lovely couple, friendly and helpful and help to make your stay enjoyable. The cottage is within easy walking distance of the village shop, pub, bakery, etc. A vist to Dunvegan Castle, and Coral Beach are highly recommended as is Talisker Bay and Neist Point a little further afield. We enjoyed traditional music night at the local Dunvegan Cellar Bar, where we were made extremely welcome. Stein Inn (the oldest Inn on the Isle of Skye) is recommended for good value food, drink and the stunning views across the Loch.
December 2011
Loved it!!!Nothing else to say, can't be bothered to use 50 characters.
December 2011
A very warm welcome received from Morag and John who went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed every minute of our holiday. Special touches included fresh flowers, tea, coffee, milk, sugar and shortbread on arrival made you feel at home right away. The accommodation was clean and comfortable with everything you required at hand. The village of Dunvegan has plenty to offer in the way of restaurants, bakers and a garage which sells groceries and newspapers. Great location for exploring the island. Although the weather wasn't very good it made all the difference coming back to a cosy, comfortable cottage. We enjoyed our stay so much that as soon as we arrived home we bkked again for 2012!
December 2011
Hillside is a beautiful cottage with ample room for a small family to relax and rest. The location is perfect for walking into Dunvegan village but with plenty of privacy. The Macdonalds were wonderful hosts and have taken care of every small detail in the cottage to ensure it is comfortable and well equipped for cooking and reading. We enjoyed hiking and exploring the artist studios nearby. We will come back to Hillside when we are next in Skye.
October 2011
The cottage provided the ideal base for us to explore the island and have a tremendous week on Skye. The friendlyness of everybody that we met during our stay was overwhelming. A perfect cottage for a perfect stay.
October 2011
This cottage is very well situated and equiped to a very good standard with very good fixtures & fittings. It is well maintained by the very friendly owner and is a perfect place to stay and explore the northern part of Skye.
Isabelle W.
September 2011
It was a grest place to stay and very friendly owners
December 2009
Having driven from Bedfordshire via Balloch to here, we found a fantastic place, convenient for walks and site seeing. What a fantastic island.
Mrs Johnston
September 2010
Owners of cottage were very friendly and helpful. Lots to do in Skye except the Stein Inn. My kids were disappointed that their "play area" was a cupboard with a couple of toys in it. Not joking!!! Other than that everything was great, even the weather was not too bad considering it is Scotland at the height of the summer.
