This cottage makes a perfect base for a memorable holiday or for a couple looking for a relaxing, romantic retreat.

Area
Renowned for its history and race horses, the attractive Wensleydale town of Middleham connects much of its history with its Norman castle, dating from 1190 and with a keep second in size only to the Tower of London. The town's charming market square has been partially cobbled and offers a wide range of shops, pubs and places to eat, whilst the bustling market town of Leyburn is just a short drive away and offers a variety of great shops and pubs. Visitors can also explore The Forbidden Corner, a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and surprises set amidst four acres of grounds, which provides a fun day out for all the family. The village is also within easy driving distance of York, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and Heritage Coast.

Region
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

We thought the In and Out cottage was charming and loved being in the small village of Middleham. We enjoyed seeing the race horses go through the village in the mornings. The many leaflets in the cottage provided many things to do that we would not have considered. The local craft trail was lots of fun as was a trip to the race course in Thirsk. We also enjoyed walking to and touring Middleham castle.

This was the second time that we stayed in In and Out Cottage. It was lovely the first time, but a number of improvements had been made prior to this stay to make it exemplary. The finishing touches to the cottage's decor were thoughtful and stylish and added to the luxurious comfortable feel. We both love Middleham and the cottage and will be back as soon as time allows.

The position of the cottage - tucked away and quiet. The cottage is spacious and very cosy and it was lovely coming back from a long walk to the log burner. The pubs in the village were all welcoming and we had a lovely meal in 'The Richard III'. Great walks from the doorstep. We hope to go back!

June 2013
The cottage was quiet, very clean and pleasant and well equipped. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the collection of tourist information was very helpful. The bunch of freesias were a nice touch as was the bottle of wine and naughty biscuits awaiting us on arrival. We felt very much at home there.

December 2013
I cannot praise 'In and Out Cottage' and it's owner enough! We were there for Christmas and it was perfect. It is a fantastic cottage that has everything you need. We cooked our Christmas dinner, the kitchen was very well equipped. The owner makes the cottage very welcoming. The fire was ready to light which was very nice. The bedroom was made up nicer than any that I have ever stayed in, and the bed is super comfortable with luxury bedding. North Yorkshire is a beautiful unspoilt place, and 'In and Out Cottage' is the perfect place to stay.
Miss McAulay
February 2012
Middleham is a very friendly and welcoming place to stay. The White Swan which was situated opposite the property had excellent food if you're looking for somewhere to eat out. The cottage itself was very cosy and the bed was probably the most comfy I have ever slept in. There are a few little towns that are close by and the Black Sheep Brewery was a good day trip.
Mrs French
August 2012
Close proximity to pubs and restaurants and we also liked watching the race horses going out for their daily exercise. This was our first trip to the Yorkshire Dales and despite the weather there was lots to do and see. The large bed in the cottage was very comfortable and provided the best nights sleep ever.
Mrs Lennon
July 2012

The location was amazing, very friendly village. Perfect romantic getaway. Pretty setting with roaring log fire, and ideally located to explore the wonders of Yorkshire and all it has to offer. We would highly recommend to friends and family. The variety of eateries and drinking establishments in such a small village was delightful. When it comes to good service and food try out the White Swan and the Bull for the warm welcome.
Mrs Wiffin

We stayed here in March, photos don't do it justice, beautiful cottage lovely bed, everything is provided including a wonderful but unexpected welcome pack including wine and a lovely Yorkshire tea loaf. Just as a foot note we wasn't impressed with the food at the white swan, but had a fantastic carvery at the Bolton Arms in Leyburn, and the Bruce Arms in Masham does excellent food.

August 2015
Beautiful, posh cottage with any and all needs anticipated by the owner- even a picnic basket with tablecloth and dishes! The cottage is comfortable and cozy, and ideally situated to explore the Yorkshire Dales. We highly recommend this cottage for couples wanting a romantic get-away.

October 2015
Fantastic romantic cottage. We felt immediately like at home. Well equipped kitchen, just a bit difficult to make the washing up,because of the position of the sink.heating was a bit difficult to regolate.in june is ok, but i think in winter could be a problem to get the bathroom hot. Another small thing that disturb me was the missing electric kettle....but we got used to the other one.apart from this, top position to vistit the Dales.Very comfy large bed, super shower.Possibility to sit outside, beautiful to enjoy the morning tea.Fireplace.Evenl if we had no contact at all with the owner, nor with somebody of sykes cottages,it all worked easy. No WIFI,but you can have it for free in the pubs around.we would stay there again

My wife and i stayed at In and Out Cottage November 28th for a long weekend and we were not disappointed! Mrs James the owner is brilliant and really has thought of everything for this lovely little cottage, she was helpful and i felt i could contact her at anytime with any queries. The cottage itself is ideally located behind the White Swan in the village. It has everything you need and more and in future we won't take as much stuff! Mrs James provides a nice bottle of wine, biscuits, coffee, tea etc and a large amount of fuel for the multi fuel stove. Perfect! The cottage is absolutely lovely, so much in fact that my wife has taken inspiration and we will no doubt be redecorating soon! It is an upside down cottage with the gorgeous bedroom and en suite downstairs and the living area upstairs. It retains many lovely original features and has all the amenities you need for cooking and staying in for a cosy night on the sofa. Mrs James has provided a vast selection of magazines, books, dvds and board games which was also a lovely touch, with the OS map coming in very handy for some of the lovely walks we did. The bed at the cottage is amazing, one of the comfiest beds we've ever had, so good i nearly text Mrs James to find out where she'd purchased it all from! I would recommend this cottage to everyone, we were so sad to leave but will definitely be returning and can't wait. There's loads to do in and around the area, we went and explored Middleham Castle, walked to Leyburn as well as some other gorgeous walks. The Gallops on the moor were brilliant to see also. Cant wait to return, thank you Mrs James!

Have just returned from a 1 week stay in this cottage. The owners had just finished doing a refurbishment as we arrived, so we were the 1st to try it out. Have to say that everything about this place, has been finished to a very high standard and is lovely and clean. The kitchen is well equipped, the soft furnishings very comfortable and the log burning stove is a nice cosy touch although there are new electric wall heaters fitted throughout. There are books there to read, dvd's to watch, and a chest of games that kept us entertained when the weather was awful out. The downstairs bedroom is lovely, the bed to die for, the best nights of sleep I think I've ever had. The en suite, has a wonderful large shower, underfloor heating, and the towels were so thick and soft. All in all we had a wonderful stay, even though the weather was pretty cold and often snowy. Middleham is an ideal base for exploring the Dales. There are plenty of good walks right from the doorstep, plus there are enough pubs and places to eat, as well as a convenience store.

Stayed last year for a weeks break to get away from it all and my wife did good booking this cottage. What a fabulous place to rent. The cottage is well equipped a right home from home, it has everything except Wi Fi , to a saddo like myself I did need the internet but hey. The bathroom is to die for, the place is so roomy and not claustrophobic at all. You look onto the stables from the back windows so you can watch the horse. The front door leads into a quiet a street like alleyway where people respect your privacy and are very quiet when they pass at night. The cottage just oozes quality, so much so were back next year for another break. There isn't a car park space outside the door but we had no problems parking the car in the square. Middleham is a lovely place to stay, horses, fantastic walking country, great castle and the local pubs are a must. Black Sheep beer hand pulled yes please!!!!!

August 2014
The cottage was exceptionally well furnished and the small kitchen area equipped with an amazing range of utensiles and facilities, even home baking if desired! Views from the lounge window right over the valley up to Leyburn were lovely. Its also right in the centre of the race horse training business so there are lots of occassions to see the animals at work. The local castle was home to the infant Richard III before becoming king, so there is renewed interest in this part of our history now that his remains have been descovered and proven in Leicester. The car parking is in the village square, cobbled village centre, which does get busy at times, and means that on arrival/departure, you can get awefully wet taking/fetching cases etc to the car, given that there are no parking facilities with the property. Nice, but tiny, sit out area for 2 chairs and a table was useful for having a cup of tea and reading whilst looking down the river valley to some glorious countryside. We'll definately go back again.

Had a bit of trouble getting the key to get in but after that was really pleased with the cottage. Shame there is no parking outside and the front door faces the back yard of pub, but the view in the other direction is briliant, horse stables and countryside. Great base for touring the Dales and make a point of getting up early at least one morning to follow the race horses and watch them train on the moors.

A small little cottage located in a good spot in Middleham perfect for exploring the dales. Bed was comfy and kitchen was well equipt if a tad on the small side. We used the travel cot for a little one which was great however the highchair provided had no straps on it which was really dangerous! But overall it was a well kept cosy cottage,

We found this cottage to be a lovely, cosy and very comfortable place for a romantic getaway over New Year. The bed was really comfy, the couch and wood-burning stove were great, and the kitchen was well-equipped. Set back off the main street in Middleham means that the cottage's location has a private and quiet feel to it, but at the same time you're a two minute walk from the village's pubs and shop. It's a great base from which to take walks in the Dales, and we found the village's decorations at Christmas time made the setting feel extra special! Very much recommended.
