The cottage was delightful and very handy indeed, located just behind the Black Bull in the main square of Middleham. It was quiet and secluded while only yards away from pubs and restaurants. The cottage was very cosy and very well equipped. We were delighted as soon as we walked in. It is in a great location and spacious enough. The welcome bottle of wine was a lovely surprise along with the fresh flowers. The lilies had a strong perfume once opened. The owners had also arranged for Christmas decorations which was another delight. We hadn't anticipated the snow but that just added to the cosy charm of a winter holiday, though we were glad not to get snowed in! We loved the village and surrounding areas and find it is beautiful in all seasons. Excellent value for money cottage even if it was in low season.

June 2007
Middleham is a perfect base for a Dales holiday - quiet (mind it was May) but with all the basic facilities - small supermarket and a choice of eating establishments. Interesting castle, lovely walk along the river and a horse fanciers heaven with all the racing stables. Jade Cottage is a little haven hidden away from the main street and very pretty. Nearby Leyburn has just about everything you might need. But be careful of the Teashop Pottery - I spent a small fortune there. The Throstlenest Tours are a must - well organised with a very pleasant and knowledgeable driver. You see so much more than you would by car. I'm a frequent visitor to the Dales and the tour covered many routes and places that I had already visited but I learnt loads and saw things that I'd not noticed before.
Mrs Hillyard
December 2007

December 2004
Great location, fabulously comfy beds/pillows and lovely hostess. We loved seeing the horses every day at the gallops,The Nosebag for tea and home baking,The Kings Head for lunch or dinner in Masham. The Forbidden Corner was excellent, convenient accommodation for day trips. The kids loved the adventure playground at Newby Hall nr Ripon. The games at the cottage were good for evening entertainment after a long day out. We could find no faults with this cottage at all. Would highly recommend it.
Mr Mrs Sherston-Baker
December 2004
Excellent cottage for couples. No shortage of good local facilities.
Mr Ashby
December 2004
The location was wonderful. I am really pleased that even though we were in the village and therefore in proximity to the corner shop and tea rooms it very much felt like we were tucked away in the middle of nowhere. The Nosebag coffee shop is a good enough reason to visit Middleham again. That will be on the trip that we plan to take to the Blue Lion pub for another very special meal.
Mr Mrs De Ferrer
December 2004
We love it so much we want to buy a place in Swaledale. One of my kids cried when it was time to leave. We had a wonderful holiday. Cottage was great.
Mr Mrs Rodgers
January 2005
We had a fabulous time in Jade Cottage. It is one of the nicest locations we have stayed in and the owner made us feel so welcome. The perfect host. The lounge with the huge inglenook fireplace was fantastic and we enjoyed a perfect Christmas here. Very comfortable, clean and spacious. Great places to visit in all directions out of Middleham. Local chippy was great too. Blue Lion in East Witton was fantastic and we'd highly recommend this. We loved it so much we have booked another week in March. Can't wait to go back.
March 2015
Just recently returned from a stay in this lovely cottage. Set back from the main road in a nice quiet location, with a small front garden overlooking a courtyard, is this traditional stone built cottage. There is parking in the courtyard for one vehicle, but the access is quite narrow and there is a gate to negotiate, so after unloading the car, we opted to leave the car in the square. It's only just around the corner and there was almple places to park. Loved the fireplace and the wood burning stove. Very warm and cosy in the evening when we weren't out visiting the pubs. The cottage is really well equipped, the kitchen has everything you could possibly need. A very nice touch, were the bread milk and butter in the fridge. There was also tea bags, coffee and a bottle of wine, plus vases of lovely fresh flowers. We visited all 3 pubs that were open. We'd found The Black Swan and Chinese takeaway had closed since our last visit to Middleham, but there is still plenty of choice of places to eat and drink. Enjoyed a very nice meal in The Richard III, and drinks in The White Swan And the Black Bull. It's well worth a visit to The Coverbridge Inn, just down the road on the way to East Witton. It's only around a mile or so's walk either along the river or by road. Great home cooked food and fine Traditional Ales. Enjoyed some lovely walks and took advantage of the use of some of the printed walks and Os maps that are left in the cottage. Middleham is a great village, it's so charming with the horses clip, clopping through the square on their way to the gallops and everyone is really friendly and welcoming. Never tire of this place and I've no doubt we will be back.
Mr Mrs Wilson
December 2004

May 2016
Our party (three sisters and one spouse) recently stayed 4 nights at Jade Cottage. It was a bit tight for four, especially with the one bathroom, but we knew that ahead of time and were prepared. Sitting by the wood fire at night was a treat. I think we chose well as a base for exploring Yorkshire; day trips out through Nidderdale or the North Yorkshire Dales were an easy drive. We enjoyed touring the castle and taking walks through the surrounding meadows. The presence of the racehorses was a welcome touch, and we partook of the local racing tour. We had planned on cooking some of our own meals, but the lure of the local pubs made eating out too easy to eat out. Everything in the village of Middleham is an easy walk. It took a bit for us Americans to figure out the heat and hot water systems, but all was okay by day two. One thing I might have asked for was a grab-bar in the shower - the sides are tall! I would definitely stay here again, and the lovely Yorkshire may draw me back soon!
August 2014
Very comfortable ,nicely furnished with dishwasher etc. Welcome bottle of wine and flowers.Very good pubs nearby.
August 2014
Middleham is an excellent location for a holiday with abbeys, castles, historic churches and interesting market towns within easy cycling distances along minor roads . Jade Cottage is very comfortably appointed and has excellent facilities. The pub next door has good meals at reasonable prices and there are other eating out places, The race horsestables and the clip clop of dozens of horses adds a special charm.
March 2013
Jade Cottage was our base during a week-long stay in Middleham. First impressions of the cottage were very good, and we particularly liked the small touch of the complimentary wine, flowers and essentials on arrival. The cottage was decorated in a very tasteful way, with both modern and period features such as the open fire (which was great on cold nights) and had a fully equipped kitchen, a variety of books, CDs and games and pretty much everything else you would require. The cleanliness of the cottage was of a high standard and the bathroom was pleasant too, apart from the door which required a lot of effort to close. The only real complaints we had were the access into the cottage and the location... While Middleham is a lovely and peaceful, classic English village, it was difficult not to make comparisons with the market town of Helmsley where we stayed the previous year. Middleham's variety of restaurants, for one, were not sufficient to satisfy our needs which led us to spend a lot of time in the nearby villages of Bedale and Layburn, whereas Helmsley had a more impressive variety of eateries. The weather was not particularly great during our stay, however, therefore the village would probably have been perfect to stroll around and further entertainment would not have been required. With nicer weather, Jade Cottage would be a perfect base for a week's relaxing or local exploration.
December 2014
Beautiful well equipped cottage set back from road and private. Excellent few days away by the fire playing games, watching tv, eating nice food, great for the older members of our party.
July 2013
excellent welcoming pack-clean a pleasent cottage to stay in.The only drawback was the small front garden! in the summer when one would like to sit out "a little cramped".The location was perfect just around the corner from the square.
Mrs Macdonald
December 2004
Cottage very quaint - some nice feminine touches. The Blue Lion at East Witton was delightful for that special meal.
September 2013
The cottage is beautifully furnished , tastefully decorated , very clean, warm and cosy. A welcome pack of Bread, Butter , Flowers and a Bottle of wine were very welcome indeed. The kitchen has everything you need for self sufficiency or you could pop into the square ( 50m) to one of 4 pubs for a drink and meal. The White Swan is more of a restaurant than a drinking pub , the Richard the Third & Black Swan offer good traditional pub grub. The Black Bull is currently changing management. The bedrooms are very cosy , quiet and comfortable ensuring a great nights sleep. If you fancy a night in the cottage there is TV, DVD , CD , Books , Maps of area etc and even a supply of board games , all of which can be done in front of a traditional log fire. We found some great walks in one of the books which enhanced our enjoyment exploring the different Dales - Nidderdale, Wensleydale, Wharfdale & Coverdale were all sampled during the week. The minor detraction from the location is that the cottage does not have a garden or great view, this however, will not stop us from returning.
July 2010
This lovely old cottage with huge open fireplace & woodburning stove was wonderfully equipped & very comfortable throughout. It was in the centre of a very attractive village with racehorses clip-clopping close by each morning. Only drawback was the narrow access drive with wheelie bins on one side but one could park free on the nearby market place, a minor quibble.
January 2011
Are Stay at this cottage was outstanding , excellent location,a very nice welcome pack and warm and friendly village location.
Viv and Gordon Shaw
May 2012
On arrival a surprise touch was a bottle of wine and fresh flowers. The cottage was fully equipped with everything you could possible think to need. It's location is ideal for all the local amenities, never known a village to have so many places to choose from to eat, drink and be very merry. The locals are very friendly too. You are Guaranteed a great holiday at Jade Cottage.
September 2012
Really enjoyed our stay here. Lovely cottage just the right size for myself and my 2 children. All furnishings and fittings excellent and we had a really cosy stay. Loved the welcome pack and wine. Parking was a bit of a downside with it being impossible to get up the lane without knocking into the wheelie bins lined up at the side but solved that by parking in the village square. Middleham itself is very picturesque and a lovely base for exploring Wensleydale. A real find!
February 2010
This was an extremely well furnished and equiped cottage with lot of nice touches, like the loaf of bread and pint of milk on arrival. It is set in a lovely area with plenty of places to eat if you dont want to cook yourself.
February 2010
There is very little to dislike about Jade Cottage and Middleham both are really very nice. The Cottage is finished to a very high standard and is well equiped. Middleham has everything you require and all a very short distance from the Cottage.
February 2010
The cottage was delightful, and the fresh flowers and a bottle of wine on arrival was so welcoming. To see the race horses going to the gallops early every morning remains in our memories, and ensures we shall not forget the lovely village of middleham. We found some great gastro pubs near by and those in the village were lovely too. All in all with great country walks, a perfect place to stay.
