Old Haven Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
This stone built semi-detached house enjoys an elevated position in the village of Sneaton and offers welcoming accommodation. The sitting room is warm and inviting with a dining area, beamed ceiling and an unusual stone corner fireplace with a wood burner, making this a comfortable and relaxing room. The well-fitted kitchen is bright and cheerful and equipped to a good standard. There are two bedrooms, a family room on the ground floor that benefits from an en-suite shower room, and a double bedroom. Both rooms are light and airy and there is a further bathroom that serves the property. Views from outside are stunning and look across to Whitby Abbey and the sea. The lovely rear garden is enclosed and has a barbecue and furniture, making it a relaxing spot to enjoy some al fresco dining.

The charming, elevated village of Sneaton is just three miles from Whitby. Delightful stone cottages line the main street and there is a traditional public house with an open fire, exposed beams and serving delicious meals at the heart of the village. Nearby is Beacon Farm, which has a tea-room, farm shop and also produces wonderful ice-cream. Sneaton is a paradise for walkers as numerous footpaths can be found around the village most notably the Monks Trod, an ancient stone pathway that the monks used to travel to Whitby Abbey to worship. The neighbouring village of Ruswarp offers boating on the River Esk and a small golf course. Sneaton is well placed for the coast and the North York Moors and offers a variety of attractions and activities, making it perfect for a holiday base.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

I stayed at Old Haven for a week in April with family and friends for a birthday treat. It is a really lovely cottage. Peaceful, pretty place a stones throw from Whitby and right by the North York Moors if you fancy a decent walk. Loads of wildlife nearby too. We spotted a badger one night, a rare treat!

This cottage really has a feel good factor about it. After being in the place for a few minutes we felt that we would be happy to live there. The caretaker is very friendly and helpful and we also met the owners who are also very nice people. The location is great with stunning unbroken views across to Whitby Abbey and the sea beyond. The local pub, The Wilson Arms, is only 5 minutes walk away and we found the owners and their customers welcoming.

July 2011
We were very disappointed with this cottage. The bathroom was shabby and the paper was peeling from the walls in places. One of the sockets in the bedroom did not work and downstairs there was dirt and dust under the furniture. We booked this cottage so that my mother (who is in her eighties) would have her own bedroom downstairs and not have to climb stairs to the bathroom. However, the toilet in her room was so small that she could not even allow herself the luxury of closing the door and there was no sink! There was supposed to be a view from the garden but all we could look at was a hedge. We returned one day to find the owner and a workman fitting Sky tv. we had not been asked if this was ok or convenient (it certainly wasn't convenient as my sister had come to visit us for the day) and we had to sit and wait for ages while the tramped back and forth through the house. would we go back? Never.
May 2014
Overall this cottage just the right side of average, needs a bit of modernisation and tlc, the heating a bit hit and miss and the shower wouldn't get hot, we did report this to the caretaker but he went away so we didn't want to bother his wife. Loved the area and it was conveniently located, handy for pub and the cafe at the farm in the village, and because we are out most of the time the issues with the house didn't spoil our holiday. However had we had to spend more time there think it would have been a bit niggly, things like the tv remotes needed new batteries and the lighting is very dim so it was hard to read at night, nothing major but we regularly rent cottages and this one just felt like they are going through the motions rather than putting much effort into it? The man next door did his best to sort thing out but suppose that there is only so much he can do about it without the owner putting a bit of financial investment and thought into bringing it up to the standard that appears to be the norm from the other places we have stayed at?
May 2013
Excellent service from the caretakers who live next door, nothing is too much trouble for them and there are friendly neighbours living alongside. The cottage is clean and well equipped, with storage heaters and a wood burning stove (with a charge for the wood)for the cold winter months, a comfortable three piece suite and two beds and two bunk beds. There is a small enclosed garden outside across a shared yard. On the down side one of the storage heaters in the living room wasn't working in December 2012, the bathroom needed redecorating and the downstairs bedroom could do with a hand wash basin to go with the shower and toilet. There are two steps into the cottage and two steps from the kitchen to the sitting room so it is not suitable for disabled people. The cottage is ideally situated to explore the beautiful North Yorkshire coast and moors and a a few miles from Whitby, but a car is needed as there is no bus service.
Miss Hall
September 2009
The location of the property was an excellent base. The caretakers were extremely friendly and helpful. The cottage itself was all that you needed.
December 2012
The caretakers next door are very friendly. We took our Lab and were made very welcome. The cottage is idealy situated for whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington and the yorkshire moors. It is very clean throughout and ideal for a couple with a dog. Unfortunately we did not visit the local pub as dogs are not welcome as they serve food, not even allowed in childrens room, even though pub was empty. We would go again as we had an enjoyable time and it being october, the dog was welcome on the beaches.
January 2013
Very friendly owners - we were very grateful for the impromptu demo on getting the Log Burner going - not having one at home - and also Sky TV - Thank you Simon. The cottage was clean and comfortable, bedroom cosy and warm, hot water always available, parking for 1 car outside essential. Sneaton is a short drive from Ruswarp and Whitby where all facilities you would expect for a seaside location are available. If you travel out of Whitby, over the large bridge, on the Scarborough Road then you will find a large Sainsburys store from where you can get back to the cottage further along the Scarborough Road, which we found easier than going back towards and through Ruswarp. Having relatives in Whitby, the surrounding area is familiar and this cottage was a nice base for us from which to visit them and see our usual favourite places of Sandsend, Whitby abbey, Goathland, Grosmont and be able to go on the tour bus etc. The cottage was like a home from home and other than benefitting from some updating of decoration in the upstairs bathroom I don't think there is much room for improvement. We would happily stay there again.
September 2011
The cottage was alittle difficult to find, but had misread the instructions, the cottage itself was lovely, had everything required with the bonus of a dishwasher. It was very comfortable & clean, close to Whitby & other places of interest. The caretaker lives next door & was extremely friendly & helpful, would have no problem recommending this cottage to anyone.
December 2011
Old Haven is a well equipped, spotlessly clean cottage just outside of Whitby with stunning far reaching views of Whitby abbey and the sea. A more than adequate kitchen and comfortable lounge, with the provision for a real fire if you wanted. There wasn't much that wasn't provided in this property. The only downside was the fact that the property backs directly onto and overlooks a main road,a bit noisy at times but overall not too much of a bother considering all the other plus sides. Good value for money
May 2010
Great area to visirt. Sneaton nice village. This cottage faces away from road. It was clwean warm and comfortable. the cooker took a bit of working out though. They said rthere would be fuel for the fire. there was none and no-one to ask. We had taken our own believe it or not. So we useed the woodburner which was cosy. Plenty of things to see and do, easy location from the cottage.
November 2010
Lovely Neighbours who answered our many questions on places to visit. The cottage was well equipped spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. Located three miles outside Whitby in rolling countryside with Beautifull views looking to Whitby abbey. A small secluded garden was also included. A short walk to local pub, where staff were very welcoming and serve lovely bar meals. Would recommend steak night! And a visit to the ice cream factory is a must. Couldn't find anything wrong with this lovely accomodation and would really look forward to another visit.
May 2011
We were made very welcome on our arrival, The cottage was very clean and comfortable with great views over to Whitby and the village pub is worth a visit be it for food or just a drink. There are some fantastic walks in the area including The Monks path which Meg ( the dog ) loved, One of the many walks we did. Brilliant!!
December 2009
We had a wonderful and enjoyable stay at this very welcolming cottage. Everything about the cottage was perfect and we would certainly return for other short breaks.
December 2009
The upstairs was very comfortable with large room and bathroom, the kitchen was reasonably equipped but the cooker hob took a while to suss out and did not seem to be terribly safe. The bottom bedroom beds were very comfortable but the shower and toilet area could be improved. In particular the toilet area which was old and needed updated. It seemed to be suitable for children but we used it as an adult bedroom/shower/toilet and that was ideal as we had a dog and could easily get out to the garden. There was no tablecloth for the dining table, the three piece suite was comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the neighbours were all friendly, but the accommodation does need a little 'tweaking' in places. The location overlooking Whitby was ideal but the entrance to the car park was dodgy, no gate being shut and so we had to keep a careful eye that the dog did not disappear from the garden to the adjacent busy road. This was avoidable by keeping constant watch when moving from the garden back to the house.
December 2009
the cottage was very nice but in the downstair bedroom the toilet was very small the area and the sights were brillant the best place we visited was heartbeat country and Bridlington there was not any place we did not like
