Nestled away in the quiet village of Frosterley in County Durham, Railway Cottage can be described as a real gem of a cottage. Dating back to 1840 the semi-detached cottage was once used as the office for quarry workers wanting to take the steam train home and is still full of fabulous original features which are a nod to the glorious past of the property. On the ground floor guests will find a comfortable and cosy living room with wood burner and leather sofas. The kitchen/dining room is spacious and well finished with modern appliances and an original Victorian range that serves as a great, decorative, original feature.
Situated right next to the Weardale Trust Heritage Steam Railway line, Railway Cottage is the perfect destination for guests who enjoy heritage railways as well as families who want to enjoy a magical journey on the Polar Express steam train at Christmas time. Absolutely ideal for families of all ages, extended families, friends, and couples there is ample space for privacy, rest and relaxation. Frosterley is located on the River Wear in Upper Weardale which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and offers fabulous views right across the Durham Dales. There are many established public footpaths and cycling routes that offer the ideal opportunity to really get to the heart of this scenic area which is often referred to as ’The Gateway to the Dales’.
Perfect for active families there are many activities in the local area including fishing, climbing, clay pigeon shooting and a heated outdoor swimming pool just 3 miles away. Also perfect for couples wanting to enjoy a quiet romantic break, guests will find that it is only a short walk into the centre of the village where there is a local fish and chip shop and numerous local pubs offering food and drink. The popular tourist destination of Stanhope is only 3 miles away and offers plenty of local shops and businesses, pubs and The Durham Dales Centre which offers a café, small shops and plenty of local information. A World Heritage Site, Durham is steeped in history with a castle and cathedral that dates back centuries. The historic market town of Hexham, popular Corbridge, Hadrian’s Wall, Bishop Auckland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Barnard Castle are all within easy driving distance. The Kynren Spectacular Eleven Arches production, in Bishop Auckland which is only a twenty minute drive away looks to be a fabulous event and is due to run from July to September 2016 and really will be an unmissable experience for guests staying at Railway Cottage. For guests who enjoy exploring National Trust and heritage sites there are many within an hour’s drive, including Barnard Castle, Raby Castle, Bowes Museum, Beamish Living Museum and High Force waterfall.
