The island of Sherkin has many beautiful, safe and clean beaches and really stunning scenery including a 15th Century Franciscan Friary and the ruined O'Driscoll Castle, Dun-na-Long.
Sherkin is approximately 3 x 1 miles and is renowned for being a home to unique wildlife and flora and fauna. There are about 100 full time residents and many interesting characters among them who live and work on Sherkin including craft workers, artists and musicians. Sherkin has a hotel and a pub, both of which offer excellent food including wonderful seafood, great conversation and regular traditional music sessions.
The island also has a church, two schools, a community centre and a library. Sherkin island has its own bus service and is easily accessible all year round with a reliable ferry service which only takes 10 minutes from the mainland, Baltimore, and the nearest Airport, Cork is just 60 miles away.
Activities such as sailing, swimming, diving, power boat trips and island-hopping, fishing (including deep sea fishing), bird watching are all easily arranged. The seas surrounding Sherkin are one of the best places for whale watching in Europe and have a year round population of dolphins and seals. Sherkin is the perfect place to relax and rewind – it has its own special character and once visited – is never forgotten!
