This is one of England’s most special places and there is much to discover - a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, and an abundance of distinctive birds, animals and plants. The Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall is nearby. Alston, the highest market town in England with galleries, cafes, pubs and steam railway, is 7 miles.
