Somerset Cottage description

Holiday home
Somerset Cottage is a cottage that has been lovingly converted from an old barn near to the North Yorks Moors village of Great Ayton, near to the market town of Guisborough. The cottage contains one double bedroom and a sofa bed which with a wet room style shower room makes it suitable for four people. The rest of the accommodation is made up of an open plan living area with a kitchen, dining area and a sitting area, which contains the sofa bed. To the outside is a communal courtyard with outdoor furniture and a barbecue, plus off road parking for two cars. With its two neighbouring cottages, Somerset Cottage can accommodate up to twelve people, making this a fabulous cottage for a large family to use as a base for exploring this wonderful region.

Area
The village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village consists of a mixture of stone cottages and some new development housing. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330-metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafes, cater well for holidaymakers. Around the village are several interesting walks and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside around, especially in the summer months when the moors turn purple with blooming heather.

Region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

It was nice to find the accommodation and the surrounding areas exactly as discribed on your website, a beautiful place to stay.

This holiday cottage is situated along a private road, set back off the main road and so is fairly quiet. It is one of three detached holiday rentals well spaced out from each other in a spacious courtyard, only ten minutes walk from the amenities that Great Ayton has to offer in a small supermarket, butchers, baker, a couple of takeaways, two or three pubs, cafes and it's history around Captain Cook. The owner lives on site too. A short ride away from the cottage is Roseberry Topping, Captain Cook's Monument, Gribdale Gate and The Cleveland Hills if you like walking, the towns of Guisbrough and Stokesely with Middlesbrough town centre shopping and outlets on the outskirts only about 8 miles away. The holiday cottages are under new management, a friendly but not intrusive lady who clearly takes pride in thoroughly cleaning the cottage out before handover to the next resident. It was spotless, warm enough (and we were there in freezing cold December !) and felt quite airy too with plenty of car parking space. We would recommend this cottage to a friend and hope to return again soon.

We liked everything about this cottage; it is detached, in a courtyard with two others but well spaced out and car parking was no problem. It is down a quiet lane and within 10 minutes walking distance of Great Ayton and this cottage is on the doorstep of some good walks. The owner is friendly but not intrusive, she has only recently taken over ownership of the three holiday cottages and her standards of cleanliness were excellent, not just the cottage itself but the kitchen cupboards, drawers, oven, microwave, fridge - all spotlessly clean and in excellent working order. The combined living/kitchen/dining area is very spacious, light and airy. The bedroom is spacious too as is the wet room/toilet.

A lovely little haven for us and not too long drives for us to visit other places, we enjoyed our stay at Somerset Cottage very much. The owner was so friendly and helpful she made us feel very relaxed.
