There are many footpaths and bridle ways - all providing superb views of the surrounding countryside. Castleton is a short walk from the North York Moors Danby Visitors centre from where a number of walks start and local arts and crafts events held. Castleton is a thriving community which has ample provision for visitors and boasts, several shops, public houses, tea rooms, a post office, garage and a bank. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park Centre is also nearby and it has a train station on the Middlesbrough to Whitby line.

In a stunning peaceful location. A comfortable and clean cottage which was very well equipped and very much a home from home. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners. We go to the North York Moors every year and would happily recommend this cottage.

Set in the valley just down from the North York Moors this upside down cottage is a treat with brilliant views across the moors from a fantastically nurtured garden and from the large skylight lounge windows. The owners have a knack for decor and furnishings and it all feels light, spacious and homely. We did not want to leave.

The views from this cottage are utterly stunning and it is ideally located for joining the Esk Valley Walk to Castleton and Danby. The village of Botton is also in walking distance - a fascinating community live there - we had a very interesting visit. The cottage was beautifully cosy - as well as being a good base from which to explore the rest of the moors. I hope to return again one day!

October 2013
An amazing location set at the head of the valley surrounded by fields and moorland, the cottage was very well equipped and unbelievably clean. If I hadn't seen reviews from previous years I would have thought that this was the first year of rental - it really was that clean and fresh! Quiet, tranquil, a feast for the eyes and even the sheep have their volume turned down! Nowhere is very close so you do expect to travel a few miles during the visit but all of that is on lovely country roads, don't expect takeaways - it would be cold by the time it arrived! My only slight criticism which in fairness I never even mentioned, is the outside light at night. It appears to be on a timer controlled from the owners house, I would have liked to turn it off as, one morning (03:00 am) I realised just how dark the night sky is in that area (the lights appear to go off at some point during the night) and the stars were fantastic! I would recommend it to anyone wanting a really nice location and a chance to recharge the batteries

We returned today from St. Helena cottage and, to be honest, hated to leave! The cottage is absolutely lovely and the owners John and Jenny are very friendly without being intrusive. The location is perfect, nestled in the glorious North Yorkshire Moors with the moors literally on your doorstep! The views are breathtaking! The cottage is very dog friendly, warm, cosy, clean and has absolutely everything you could need. The surrounding area is stunning and is perfect for long walks. It is conveniently located within a few miles of a village with shops, a post office, a tea room and pubs and not too far across the moors from larger towns Whitby and Pickering. We really can't praise St. Helena Cottage enough and would recommend it to everyone!

December 2009
We were made very welcome with tea and cakes on arrival and during our stay the owners were alays there if needed but never intruded on our privacy. The cottage is very well appointed and very comfortable with an exit on to the moors right outside the front door. Whilst standing on its own in the moors the cottage never feels isolated with full amenites only 3 miles away. This was our third visit and we cannot wait to experience it again.

Very quite place, very kind owners, nice towns nearby worth to visit, we made several walks just outside the door but also a few miles (5-20)from the cottage. Bedrooms are a bit small and the beds a bit uncomfortable to us. Living, kitchen and bathroom well equipt.

We had a wonderful holiday in this property, the owners were really nice, helpful and caring without being intrusive. The property itself is wonderful, fully equiped with everything you could need, nicely decorated, comfortable, and beautiful location. I would full recommend this property to everyone, the dogs were made very welcome, we will always remember our holiday with much fondness. The surrounding countryside was wonderful, the only problem is the mobiles cannot receive reception, which on a plus side nobody can pester you, you are literally AWAY FROM IT ALL.
