Stable Cottage description

Stable Cottage has been converted from the barn attached to the manor house, which is a typical example of a late medieval Westmorland long house dating from 1650. Originally used to house livestock, the barn was converted to stables in the 19th century. Stable Cottage now provides all the home comforts, cleverly combined with the historical aspects including original exposed oak beams and offers single storey accommodation. It is a perfect place for a relaxing break in the Eden Valley.

There is an excellent range of pubs within walking distance, all serving good food and a wide range of ales, and the local village inn, which was built in the 1870s for the engineers of the Carlisle to Settle Railway which bisects the village, serves excellent food and real ale, so no need to cook while on holiday! The local inn also serve Tirril Ale, with the brewery located in the village.

The property is pet friendly and two well behaved dogs are welcome. Being situated in the middle of beautiful countryside, there are riverside walks, or longer circular walks on the dramatic North Pennine Moors.

Stable Cottage is located in the wonderful Eden Valley, a tranquil part of Cumbria, close to Penrith and the great border city of Carlisle. Hadrian’s Wall, the Northern Pennines, the edge of the Lake District National Park, the western fringe of the Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish Borders are also within a short drive. The Carlisle-Settle railway line is very popular, with a scenic route from Appleby through to Leeds. Settle or Skipton are stop offs on this route and are both lovely market towns, well worth a visit. Appleby can provide most provisions, with an excellent greengrocers, a bakery, two very good butchers, post office, bank and takeaways.

From Stable Cottage you can enjoy a multitude of outdoor pursuits and activities including walking, climbing, horse riding, trekking, fishing, cycling, golf at Appleby and Go Ape treetop adventures. Bring your road bike as the area is quiet and relatively free of traffic, and it is no coincidence that the Tour of Britain cycle race has held numerous stages in area. Names such as Hartside, Great Dun Fell on the North Pennines, and Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose Passes in the Lake District are there in cycling folklore. For mountain bikers, you are spoilt for choice with Whinlatter and Grizedale Forests and the GNAR Cumbrian Bike Park on the doorstep. The property has a storage area for bikes and equipment, a drying room if required and a dedicated area for essential maintenance. There is even a local CYTECH accredited bike mechanic who could do the repairs if needed.

The cottage is ideally placed for fishing, being centrally located in the Eden Valley, home to some of the best fishing in the UK. Self-guided or guided salmon and trout fishing can be arranged on the Rivers Eden and Eamont. Renowned salmon rivers Tyne, Derwent and Lune are only a 1-hour drive away and are easily accessible by excellent road links. If it is lake or still water angling you prefer, the Lake District offers some fantastic fishing for both trout and coarse fish on natural or stocked waters, and are often set amidst some of the most breathtaking scenery to be found anywhere in the country. The aptly named Trout Beck meanders 500 yards from the cottage and by negotiation, fishing is available for pure wild stocks of brown trout. An area in the owners’ chest freezer can be made available for those of you lucky enough to catch and keep your fish! Shops 3 miles, pub 200 yards. All on the ground floor.
