Stone End Cottage Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
Situated in a residential area at the very heart of the beautiful Dales village of Austwick is this delightful cottage, a lovely semi-detached property. Comfortable and spacious throughout, this lovely building offers a charming sitting room and a large, well-equipped fitted kitchen. The cottage also comes with a pretty, well-established garden set amidst fantastic views over the surrounding countryside - ideal for alfresco dining.

Area
Arguably one of the finest areas for walking in the region, the village of Austwick provides an excellent base for ramblers looking to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Full of limestone pavements and scars, caves and open moors, this diverse and varied scenery offers a wealth of wonderful cycle tracks and walks through areas full of natural interest. In addition to boasting an excellent local pub serving home cooked meals as well as a country hotel for an extra special night out, Austwick also has a shop and post office to meet visitors daily needs. As one of the less well-known villages in the area, this wonderful little settlement offers a quiet location off the beaten track and away from the crowds. With the towns of Settle, Kirkby Lonsdale, Skipton and Kendal all close by, Austwick provides peace and quiet without leaving you feeling marooned.

We were very impressed with the property, and the friendly nature of the communications with the owner. The village and surrounding countryside lived up to all our expectations. The local pub and it's food were both good in the friendliness and taste departments. We would certainly recommend this property and company to all friends and family.

The cottage is set in an unspoilt village with excellent amenities - a pub with good food and ale, a super local shop, a playground for the children and lovely walks of varying lengths from the door.

The cottage is very warm, cozy and comfortable. We all settled down very quickly - even our little dog settled down straight away. The cottage was central to the village, close to the shop and lovely pub, which served great food and had a gluten free menu - my daughter being a caeliac this was a huge bonus!

The configuration of the cottage was perfect for us as we were a two family party; so two doubles and two twins were ideal. The cottage location is excellent, right in the middle of the village within a 3 minute walk of the very friendly local pub, the very friendly hotel and the equally friendly local shop! We took a trip on the Settle to Carlisle Railway - brilliant for adults and children alike! We had a fantastic break.

The cottage is attractive and I am sure in the summer the side garden is a nice place for alfresco dining. We had to call the owner on arrival at the cottage, who then drove round to meet us and show us around. Unfortunately we booked a particularly cold week in March and the first impression on entering the cottage was not favourable. The heating was not on, and had clearly not been on for some time. The cottage felt very cold. As we rented in March we would've expected it to feel a little more welcoming. It took a few hours to take the chill off. The cottage is of good proportions. The kitchen is well stocked and the property clean. The bedrooms are comfortable and the bathroom is a good size with seperate shower cubicle being most welcome. Immediately behind the cottage a row of mews style cottages have been built so the cottage no longer overlooks fields. The village is rather nice and in a good location for touring. Sadly the food in the village pub was poor on the day we visited for a special birthday meal. Hopefully it was the chef's day off but we didn't risk another meal.

The cottage was excellent - warm, well-equipped, clean and spacious. The location was really good - near the centre of the village but quiet too. It was a great week - particularly as the weather was brilliant too. We would definitely want to return to this cottage.

Contrary to previous reviews the new owners keep the property clean, and no animal smell which is surprising given it is two dog friendly. We had a succession of friends to stay during a week long birthday celebration and everyone left happy. Oven a bit slow but we just allowed more time when cooking. Could do with a wifi connection now fibre broadband is in the village, but some people might see no broadband as a plus. Village lovely, pub gave big portions and had good beer. Everyone we met was friendly.

We stayed in the cottage in October. The village itself is lovely and convenient for some nice local walks in the area. Malham Cove, Norber Erratics, Ingelton Waterfalls and many more. The area itself is lovely and scenery fantastic. Austwick has a small local shop, whose staff are friendly and helpful. Same can be said for the pub , the Gamecock Inn. We had lovely meals in here and can be recommended. Back to the cottage.....its a bit dirty, beds need replacing as do the quilts and blankets and pans carpets and towels... Kitchen tap needs looking at. Showers have mould in and we had to give the shower head a clean. Cooker hob needs a steam clean, oven takes an age to warm up. Property needs broadband as reception in the house is poor . Not a lot going for it but it could be given a refurbishment for the price . An open fire would be an asset but there is an awful looking gas fire however the heating is adequate. The main selling point is the location.

The cottage had been poorly maintained for some time, dripping tap, dirty switches, food stains on pans and crockery. Worn and stained carpets. Since there was no discount for only two people staying this property was grossly overpriced. It is a beautiful area to stay in and I guess that is why we have to put up with such poor accomodation.

Very disappointed with our stay. Badly maintained with a feel of minimum attention for maximum price. Top of the list of faults is the kitchen - the fan oven doesn't work and the oven takes around 2 hours to get up to temperature - rendering it useless. The dishwasher is worn out - the cutlery drops through holes in the basket etc. etc. Mostly same posters stuck to the wall. For the money we pay this is very poor value. I guess this reflects the fact that it's a popular area with relatively little accommodation available, but this is no excuse.

The cottage location was superb - lots of walks on the doorstep the village is truly beautiful. The cottage comfortably accommodated our party of 8 plus dogs. The cottage was well equipped, very comfortable spacious.

The cottage was big enough for us all and Austwick gave us everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped and there was comfortable furniture in the lounge. The toys, books, games videos were lovely for the children. Sykes staff are very helpful really put themselves out for you.

Stayed in cottage for 6 days with extended family including 2 babies Very easy to access within charming village with helpful, friendly people with one exception .Contrary to other reviews we did not find the local restaurant / pub very hospitable Possibly because we had 2 young babies and did not reserve a table but as we arrived at 5 o'clock when it opened we were surprised that the manager had to chek that there was availability when the restaurant was clearly empty and no other customers arrived whilst we were eating!! It advertises a "steak night" on Thursday and when we asked about this he was very reluctant to give much information only to say that the steak provided was not that on the menu IIt would be only 8 ozs --- this satisfied us as we had eaten at lunchtime However when it arrived it was not a good steak and most was taken away to feed the dogs back at the cottage!!! Needless to say we did not return for the rest of our stay as it literally left us with a "bad taste" Not just with the food but with the person in charge of the restaurant who appeared to have a "personality by-pass" The young French lady who served us ,however, was charming !!! The cottage itself was more than adequate although It was not luxurious The bedding and towels were a little tired but the kitchen was very well equipped there was always plenty of hot water and the heating could be controlled to suit your own needs. We had to move the bed around in one of the rooms to make room for the cot but that was no problem There was nore than enough room in the master bedroom for the other cot. One more point which I think may be relevant to families is that there are no medical facilities nearby We had the misfortune to have one of our babies fall ill at the weekend and the nearest medical centre was in Lancaster Royal Infirmary a&E; which was nearly an hour away We were treated very well there and discharged after a few hours but the drive through unlit winding roads with a sick baby was not an experience I would recommend !! Despite this mishap I would return to the cottage It provided an excellent base for exploring the nearby villages which are so pretty and also access the southern lakes which are within easy access.

There are loads of brilliant walks both from the door or from one of the neighbouring villages, all of which have very good lunch stops - cafes and pubs (good food, good beer, and usually a warm welcome). The local pub and shop are good too. The cottage has ample kitchen, dining and lounge facilities/space for our group of 8 adults. All in all, though, we find it a great place to walk and relax, the cottage comfortable and warm.
