Stouphill Gate Cottage Family Cottage description

Holiday home
Originally part of a farmhouse built in the 1700s, this property has been sympathetically restored to offer accommodation for groups of up to five people. It has retained much of its charm through original features such as exposed beams, a bread oven and a cooking fireplace in which the owner has installed a wood-burning stove; perfect for cosy winter nights. For the hazy summer evenings and a bite to eat outside, there is a large, private lawn. With off-road parking for up to four cars, the cottage is enviably located for all the nearby attractions.

Area
A small and compact village, Ravenstonedale has much to offer the visitor seeking a quieter experience than the nearby Lake District National Park provides. It is a pretty village; traditional whitewashed stone cottages and stone walls border the fields, whilst the Raven brook trickles by. St Oswald's church is largely from the Georgian era, comprising a solid structure with a simple square tower. In addition, there are elements from older buildings incorporated in it, and the base of a Saxon cross just outside. To the north of the church, excavations in 1920 revealed the foundations of a 13th Century Gilbertine Abbey. Ravenstonedale is a fantastic base for exploring the Lakes to the west or the Yorkshire Dales, just a short drive to the east. Those who prefer to stay closer to home can explore the Howgill Fells, the rounded hills which signal the start of the Lakeland ranges.

Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

NO complaints whatsoever. This is a lovely little place to stay, out in the country but within walking distance of three great pubs. Lovely owners gave us an unassuming welcome and provided for us without interfering. If you like simple, cosy and quirky then stay here.

If you are looking for a quiet get away with everything you need; a home away from home, well this is the ideal cottage location. Ideally situated in rural Cumbria near the towns of Kirkby Stephens and Sedbergh and 40 mins drive away from Windermere. The Cottage itself is a part of an old farmstead and despite all the modifications has manage to retain a great deal of the original features including the stone stairway. The cottage as been renovated to a very high standard and sports everything you would need for normal every day life. The owners are very friendly and made my partner and I feel very welcome, we received tea, coffee, sugar, milk and not forgetting some home made cakes, which was a lovely welcome gesture. Despite not getting the walking boots on and trekking through the snow topped hill, there is a great deal of scenery and wildlife to be seen through the window of the living, with the frequent visit of birds to the feeders, including a woodpecker which I managed to catch on camera, normally arriving around mid morning and late afternoon to feed. The family cat did make random attempts to gain entry and will spent hours on the window sill. As well as making use of the fully functional kitchen we also dined out. Close by in the village of Ravenstonedale the Black Swan (5mins drive) serves up some very nice food and I would recommend the Lamb shank. In summary, it was a pleasure to stay at the cottage for 3 nights and will certainly be planning to return again during the year.

August 2013
This very old and charming cottage had plenty of space for the two of us. The friendly house owner explained how to use the coal-stove and told us about the history of the house. The only downside was that we missed a wi-fi possibility for internet. We also had a bad receiving for the I-phone. We liked the quiet surrounding with sheep and beautiful hills.

December 2009
We had a week in this lovely cottage which was excellent throughout. The owners who live in the adjoining cottage were the font of knowledge when it was needed. Good location with two pubs within walking distance both with excellent food. If you wish to cook the facilities in the cottage kitchen were very good. The wood burner on cold evenings was a delight. All in all a brill holiday.

January 2012
We had lots of help and advise from the owners who lived next door about local ameneties and how to keep the stove in overnight! The cottage was pretty and had everything we needed. The location was very handy for the North East, The Lakes and the Dales. The only small complaint I had was that the settee was not very comfy but overall we had a super time.

We had an excellent time at this cottage. The original features including the flagstone floor, beams and even an old bread oven were brilliant! The setting is perfect - remote enough with brilliant views but close enough to the village and 2 great pubs. Owners were really welcoming and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. Overall a really good relaxing break!
