Sunflower Cottage Family Cottage description

Holiday home
This lovely stone cottage with views of the open countryside is located on the edge of Eglingham. Renovated to a remarkably high standard, the decor of the house skilfully combines old-world charm with modern practicality and can be enjoyed throughout the year. The spacious living room offers a multi-fuel stove for days when the weather isn't at its best. With a lovely, well-maintained garden, perfect for picnics beneath the apple trees, this cottage is a great place to bring the family.

Comprised of neat stone houses with well-kept gardens, a Victorian church, large pub and traditional restaurant, the village is a wonderful setting to try living life at a more leisurely pace. For those wanting to escape the hustle-and-bustle of the city, the surrounding hills and valleys offer fascinating walks through this vibrant countryside. Birdwatchers will enjoy trips to the Farne Islands which are rich with wildlife, though you don't have to go far to spot some interesting birds as closer to home, herons have been sighted in the Eglingham burn. For those who like history, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is very close by, as are the castles of Warkworth, Chillingham, Alnwick and Dunstanburgh.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

The cottage was immaculate and we felt welcome to use the facilities as our own. We had two young children and an infant and felt comfortable letting them play and explore. The location was perfect for exploring around Northumbria and we would love to return.
Mrs Pope
July 2016
Lovely property in a very quiet and picturesque village but relatively close to the main amenities in Alnwick. Good access to A1 so easy to get to Northumberland's tourist attractions. Excellent holiday.
Ms Wood
May 2015
Sunflower Cottage is a really lovely and well cared for cottage. It was comfortable and well furnished with lots of care and attention to detail. I finally got to play with an AGA without having to buy one, but we never got round to lighting the magnificent looking fire in the living room because it just wasn't cold enough.
Mrs Butler
April 2015
A beautiful traditional cottage in an excellent location. Loved the Rayburn open fire. It was brilliantly equipped and spotlessly clean; a real home from home. We fell in love with the cottage as soon as we walked through the door. Loved the pub across the road, everyone was very friendly. The community tennis court/football pitch outside the back door was a bonus. A great base for Northumberland Scotland. We didn't want to leave.

We absolutely loved the cottage and decor - the lounge and open fire were fantastic. We only used the main bedroom, it was excellent. Whole place fab and I also loved the AGA. Maps in the basket and local walking magazines were so useful. Overall we loved it and are looking forward to a return visit.
Mrs Marshall

Beautiful cottage, a real home-from-home. Cooking on the aga took some getting used to but it made the kitchen very warm and homely. Next time, I'll do more roasts!
Mr Scopes

The cottage had a very high standard of cleanliness. Everything was clean and tidy. The kitchen equipment, pans, crockery etc, was in much better condition than normally found in a holiday cottage. The Sykes brochure would always be the first one we would look at for holiday cottages.

We had a really fantastic time. The cottage was utterly wonderful and just what we needed, so too the garden, the weather and the entire area. So much to do for all ages, and so relaxing. We wish we had had more time there. Our son was so happy there that, on arriving back home he refused to get out of the car because he wanted to go back! He is still asking us to plan another holiday there asap! We will definitely do so.
Mr Millner

Lovely quiet location but sufficiently close to main places of interest - sea, castles, gardens etc. We thought the cottage was very pleasant and comfortable.

The cottage was very welcoming and had everything we needed. It felt as if the owners use the cottage themselves which always improves the standard. A very quiet village with a welcoming pub just steps away. The selection of books, videos and music was varied and good - something for everyone!
Mr Krzyzanowski
October 2008
The property was just like a home from home, we all felt very comfortable. We wanted to be close by, but not in Alnwick, and the cottage was a perfect distance. Having a pub in the village was very handy, and you could get a bus into and back from Alnwick if need be. There is so much to do in the area that a return visit is a must!

The area is fabulous, miles of untouched countryside. The cottage was everything we hoped for, we have already booked for next year. We would like to take all our family! It felt like home from the moment you pull up on the drive. The coastline was wonderful much of it so natural and unspoilt.

The cottage was beautiful in perfect surroundings for a quiet retreat. The owners have decorated beautifully in keeping with the age of the property. It was also the best cottage we have been to as far as games, books etc plenty to entertain every age.

The location was stunning, so very quiet and peaceful, exactly what we hoped for. The cottage itself was lovely, in a very pretty village with a smashing pub just across the road! We would not hesitate to recommend the area of Northumberland or the cottage in particular.

Mr Mrs Gregory
December 2005
It was a pleasure staying at Sunflower cottage. It was a home from home. The attention to detail by the owner is outstanding it was like staying in their home not in a holiday let. We enjoy cooking and the kitchen was more than adequately stocked with cookware and the Rayburn was a dream to cook on. The house was warm and welcoming. The kitchen was really cosy with the Rayburn. We will definitely be going back to stay. The area is also outstanding the village is friendly. The house is in a good location to visit other areas of interest.
Mr Mrs Gregory
December 2006
This is our second year at Sunflower Cottage and under a new owner the property has maintained its warmth and cosy atmosphere. The additions/amendments were appreciated. It really is like being at your home in Northumberland as soon as you enter the cottage you feel so much at home, and the fire makes it even cosier in the sitting room on a cold night. The kitchen is still more than adequately equipped for budding chefs and the Raeburn a delight to use.

May 2015
This is a wonderful old cottage a real home from home and very close to Alnwick . The facilities are great it is spotlessly clean with everything you need ,loads of videos/games plus a TV if you just want to veg out. Linen and towels are supplied and beds are very comfortable. We highly recommend this cottage .
Mr Kenny
April 2005
This is a lovely house in a quiet setting. Very much a home from home with lots of lovely personal touches but not in a fussy way.
Dr Clements
June 2005
A lovely, lovely cottage, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any one. If only all holiday cottages were as good as this one!
July 2013
This delightful cottage, (it was an old cottage not a modern building calling itself a cottage), was certainly a revelation. If all the properties we have stayed in were like this I would be overjoyed! Spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated this well equiped cottage has everything, even nice big fluffy towels! My husband and I will do all we can to stay here again.
September 2012
We enjoyed the views from this cottage, and use of the tennis court/playing field. It made a good base for exploring the area around alnwick and the beautiful beaches.
May 2013
This cottage was beautiful inside & out. The kitchen was the heart of the cottage complete with an AGA which meant meals had to be thought about, but it provided warmth throughout the house. The beds were kingsize and very comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and the whole place was spotlessly clean. Ample books, games & DVDs available, only possible complaint is maybe a larger TV would be better but you don't go to such a lovely part of the country to watch TV! A short drive away from Alnwick and the coast, an ideal location.
August 2011
Everything and everyone is catered for - right down to an extensive range of CDs and DVDs to use. We loved the large, bright kitchen, especially the range and all the amenities to give a home from home feeling. The decor throughout was cosy and warm and overall, gave a real cottage feeling. Certainly a relaxing, peaceful location but ideally situated to visit the sights the area has to offer/
November 2010
I thought the cottage was lovely, it instantly felt warm and welcoming. We travelled with a child and grandparent and everyone enjoyed the area and returning each evening to such a great cottage. The aga was fun to use, walks right from the door and an excellent inn almost opposite. The cottage was clean and had lots of entertainment in it, cd's books, games and dvd's. A lovely introduction to the North of England
June 2010
Sunflower cottage is a true home from home. Comfortable, spacious and (once we'd worked out the Raeburn) cosy. Eglingham is wonderful and a great base from which to explore all Northumberland has to offer. Although only there for a week, the cottage really made an impression. The first thing we did on getting home was book another week in the Summer!
December 2009
The cottage was up to our expectations in all but one item. The toilets took too long to flush after use, even though there were two. Both took up to 1/4 hour to be ready for the next person. We were warned that the Aga cooker was slow, so it was no suprise that our meals tended to be after their alotted time. Overall though we would return in the future.
