Sunny Hill Romantic Cottage description

Holiday home
On the edge of the pretty village of Great Strickland, seven miles from Penrith, is this fabulous single-storey detached cottage. Situated in the attractive grounds of the owner's home, this property provides first-class accommodation in a quiet, peaceful location. The property provides a wealth of character features such as exposed beams, Velux windows and a cosy wood-burning stove. Adding to the property's airy feel are a set of French doors leading to a wonderful, private, south-facing patio area – ideal for alfresco dining, or sunbathing with a good book.

Area
Ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and Eden Valley, the attractive, unspoilt rural village of Great Strickland makes an excellent holiday spot. Most of the local amenities for the village are provided by the nearby market town of Penrith and include a good selection of shops and restaurants, a cinema and swimming baths. Great Strickland does have some amenities with an excellent village pub. Just two miles away is the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre whilst a cruise on one of Ullswater's motor yachts is also worth investigating – these leave hourly from Pooley Bridge, just five miles from Great Strickland. Dalemain Historic House, which was used as a backdrop in a television adaptation of Jane Eyre, is nearby as is the Rheged Discovery Centre, giving visitors a wide selection of holiday activities.

Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

This cottage was one of the best we have ever stayed in. It was immaculate and had absolutely everything you would ever need. So much thought has gone into every detail, especially games and toys for children. The privacy was amazing and the cottage itself was so comfortable and cosy. The owners were lovely and extremely helpful. The area was perfect and central to see and do so many things. Overall we had a fabulous holiday and would not hesitate to return to this cottage or recommend it to family and friends.

The accommodation was excellent and a credit to the owners. In fact, the property and gardens are so good that you're reluctant to venture out. The local pub is great, retaining its original country English charm and serving the best steaks we've had for some time. The entire holiday break was relaxing and the best for years.
Mrs Hoskinson

September 2011
This is a charming and rather ideal cottage for a couple or small family. Hard to fault in the main and so stylish and comfortable, the photos don't quite do it justice. It is so tastefully decorated, compliments to the owner. My fiance and I loved the large private peaceful garden and 2 person swing seat for relaxing. We had an evening rabbit visitor most nights. The open plan living-dining-kitchen area is lovely and spacious and light with velux skylights and windows all round. We loved the french windows/patio despite a sudden promulgation of flies and wasps! Very comfy sofas and good sized tv. Great hi-fi. Games and books provided. Great central heating, gorgeous flooring throughout. Stylish bathroom and ensuite with great showers, beautiful main bedroom and adequate second bedroom. The owners were very friendly and likable people and kind enough to lend us their own tv/dvd player when the batteries died in the remote of the other unit, which was hugely appreciated. A bottle of wine was waiting for us on arrival. The location is so peaceful and quiet and we enjoyed 2 walks from the door down quiet winding lanes and were lucky enough to see 2 red squirrels, all within minutes of the cottage. Penrith is a few miles by car which has a good sized Morrison's superstore just beyond the town centre. A charming and relaxing base from which to get out and explore the eastern and central lake district. Highly recommended!
Mr Edwards

We found this cottage to be very well laid out although the second bedroom only had one single which was fine for us but would have been a little snug with 2 beds OK for 2 children As the weather was kind to us we made good use of the patio Cottage was in a good central position and the village had a good pub which we can highly recommend . We enjoyed eating there several times. Will definitely return.

Lovely well equipped cottage. Light and airy and quite spacious. Would have preferred a washing machine to the dishwasher, but no complaints. Very quiet village and the local pubs were great for meals.

October 2013
We received a warm welcome from the owner of Sunny Hill. The property itself was very clean, tidy and comfortable. As a single storey cottage, with no steps to negotiate inside, it was also very accessible for anyone with mobility problems. My daughter and her friend enjoyed being able to spend time in the garden relaxing and having fun in the early evening after a day out. Sue, the owner was very knowledgeable about amenities such as restaurants, pubs etc. All her suggestions proved to be 'spot on' with regard to who would provide us with good service etc. The cottage was located in a very peaceful village surrounded by lovely views. It was well situated for walkers and anyone keen to see more of the Lake District. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable time and returned home feeling like we'd had a good break.

We've visited Sunny Hill before but in the bleak midwinter of 2009, so we were keen to revisit without snow drifts and be able to explore more of the beautiful Cumbrian countryside that we just could not get to first time around. We were not disappointed - the walk to the village pub is just right, with a fantastic menu to suit everyone. Sue and Joe are so accommodating and nothing is too much trouble for them to ensure you have a great relaxing stay. The cottage has everything you could possibly need and is so comfortable. The weather was amazingly mild for mid-March which all added to the overall pleasure of the week - we even managed to sit out in the garden for lunch on two days and use the garden swing to have forty winks after our lunchtime bottle of wine, left as a welcoming gift from our hosts. I think we may even go back again in another season - we've yet to spot those red squirrels that many other visitors seem to have seen many times before us!

We stayed here for a week during august, weather was iffy but the cottage was so nice that it didn't matter if we stayed inside for a day or two. There's plenty of walks to go on, very close location to Penrith, Ullswater and other lakes. We went over to Kendal to see a play at the Theatre by Windermere, which was hilarious. The owners are really welcoming, warm and accommodating.

A lovely welcoming cottage. If you want to get away from it all its perfect as it is very secluded. There is no shop in the village so if you are not wanting to drive then ensure you have all your supplies as it is about 5 mile to the nearest one. The fire starter pack does not last long, I reccomend taking fire lighters with you I did for one day and the fire lasted much longer. The home made cake and wine that was there for our arrival was a lovely touch would definatley return

We try to make a trip to he Lake District a yearly event. We prefer to be just outside the busiest area's when in the Lakes. Sunny Hill was a perfect find for us. Peace and quiet within a well kept garden to return to after a day touring the area. The local pub prepared superb meals...roll on next year when we hope to make a return trip to Sunny Hill and its friendly helpful owners.

The cottage is furnished to a very high standard and therefore our stay there was most comfortable. The owners, who stayed next door, were very friendly but in no way intrusive. Their welcome pack, as well as the usual necessities, included a bottle of wine. Overall we look on this cottage as " a great find " and hope to return sometime next year. It is ideally situated for both The Dales and The Lakes. A quick read at the House Book shows nothing but satisfied customers!

The cottage was situated in a quiet area but within easy reach of Penrith with its variety of shops and supermarkets. We were greeted warmly by the owners and shown round.A nice touch were the scones and tea waiting for us after our long journey. The cottage was charming with en suite shower room to the master bedroom and a lovely family bathroom with shower over. The french doors opened onto a patio with table ideal for a leisurely breakfast watching the birds in the pretty garden.A trip to the lakes is a must,as is a visit to Ambleside. At Cockermouth we visited Wordsworths house and explored the local shops. On the way home from there we called at Maryport.Dont be put off by the industrial area near the harbour the beach and rock pools are superb as is a paddle in the sea.Lodore falls in Borrowdale is a magical spot but be prepared for a steep narrow climb with a single track road.We had a fantastic week helped by super weather. Why go abroad with all that waiting about at airports etc when we have the fabulous scenery and luxury accmmodation here?

December 2009
Easily booked via the internet and Sykes very helpful. Accommodation very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Highly recommend the en-suite shower (wish we had one like it at home). Bottle of wine in the fridge and tea and biscuits a lovely idea, (both went down very well). Hosts very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. To sum up the best holiday cottage let we have experienced in the last 20 years. So much so we rebooked for next year within a week of returning home. Location was brilliant, near Penrith and the Lakes but far enough away to feel really rural. Loved the hammock and barbeque, only sorry we didnt get a chance to use them, maybe next time. Even managed a day trip into Scotland. Liked the comfortable furniture and the wood burning stove (which got used a few times), cant really think of anything we didnt like. Weather could have been better but didnt expect too much end September in the UK.

December 2009
The cottage has been purpose built, and has been beautifully appointed with wood, looking as though no expense has been spared. The open plan dining and sitting room are extremly comfortable, like home from home. The garden viewed from the french windows has been lovingly landscaped. Directions given to the cottage by the host were clear, and of course the Lake district itself is wonderful for walking around the various lakes, and the village pub not only has wonderful landlord, the food is also wonderful

We stayed in Great Strickland in 2008 and the weather was very good to us we had sunshine all week. We received a great welcome and were very comfortable in this disceptively sized cottage. The garden was a great size for the kids to run around and the patio area was a real sun trap. Any little problems were quickly sorted by our hosts who live in the house at the end of the drive. Everything was spotelessly clean and in good condition. The only draw back for us was the limited amenities in the village but we were very centrally placed for touring the Lake district which we saw alot of during our 1 week holiday.
