Swallows Cottage Coastal Cottage description

Holiday home
Swallows Cottage is an old farm cottage, situated just 5 miles from Warkworth. With one bedroom and set in picturesque farmland, this cottage is an idyllic retreat for couples looking to spend some quality time together. The accommodation is substantial and welcoming with a large, grassy garden for alfresco dining in the summer months. Winter and autumn provide their own atmosphere and the cottage is fully central-heated. Served by stunning beaches and rolling countryside, Swallows Cottage offers the best of both worlds at any time of year.

The 14th Century bridge that once welcomed travellers through its gates is now for pedestrian use only, but a new bridge takes motorists straight into the town centre. The town itself is made up of terraces of 18th and 19th Century houses built from grey stone and with red roofs. St. Laurence's Church is the only near-complete Norman church in Northumbria and sports a rare 14th Century stone spire. From Warkworth it is also possible to travel upriver by boat to Hermitage, a refuge built by a hermit in the 14th Century. The refuge is hollowed into the face of a cliff and consists of a chapel and two living chambers on separate floors. Warkworth also has its own beach and is within easy reach of further attractions, such as Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland National Park.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

The location of the cottage made it easily accessible to many English Heritage properties. The owners were very helpful in giving ideas for places to visit as well as being extremely friendly and inviting. They own a dog that had a very calm and sweet nature; this made our holiday even more enjoyable.

First off we had a lovely warm welcome from the owners with wine and milk ready for us in the fridge. Also there were freshly cut flowers in the lounge. The shower was powerful and easy to use and the bed was extremely comfortable. We stayed during a very hot spell but the cottage was cool and it was easy to sleep at night. We loved the rustic decor and the great, peaceful location of the cottage. The garden was good to relax in and the wildlife was amazing. We were within easy reach of a number of nice places to go. The owners had thoughtfully compiled an extensive reference dossier for the area. We visited castles, gardens, villages and beaches. This was our best cottage holiday yet. In fact it was just perfect!

October 2005
Great location for touring the surrounding area. Cottage was comfortable, well maintained and equipped. The owners were very friendly and made us feel right at home. We had a wonderful time staying there.
January 2014
We had an autumn holiday in this warm and welcoming cottage. The facilties are as presented in the book description and the host are welcoming and friendly. The cottage is ideally located for country and coast vists. There are good National Trust properties in the area which are well worth making time for. Linidsfarne is worth the day and the coastal paths around here make for good walking. The one thing we failed on was to find Northumberlandia. Locals we asked (inclduing a tour guides) each gave a different location, some very far off the mark! The best (and most accurate) information we got was foiled by road works so that is one place left ot visit and maybe by next time there will be some signage in place to help.
October 2012
This cottage was well placed to explore the wonderful county of Northumberland - there is plenty to do and great country to explore. You do have to be prepared to get in the car and drive as not so much is within walking distance from the cottage. Our hosts were interesting and informative and concerned that we should be comfortable.

The cottage is located in beautiful Northumberland and was a very convenient base for visiting the area. The cottage was spotlessly clean and homely. The kitchen was well equipped and the garden was stunning. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the cottage and would highly recommend to anyone wishing to visit this area.
December 2011
Great owners, reception bottle of wine, very comfy & spacious.
July 2012
Just back after staying for a week in Swallows cottage, what a beautiful place to stay. The cottage was really clean & Pauline was very friendly & informative when we arrived. We were well prepared when we arrived but thought the complimentary tea/coffee tray was a great idea & the bottle of wine in the fridge chilling just makes you think they have thought about the little things that make a difference. The kitchen had everything we needed for a self catering holiday, even the knives were sharp ! All in all a very enjoyable stay, cant wait to return.
Raymond and Laurena Leigh
December 2011
The cottage was of very high quality and immaculately maintained. It offered all the amenities one could expect including a nice garden and patio. It is situated within easy driving distance of most of the major tourist attractions, including alnwick castle and gardens,Warkworth castle etc.Within a short distance there is a pub with a first class restaurant. The owners of the property are a delightful couple, very friendly and helpful. They live just a short distance away and are always at hand to answer any queries should any arise. One minor criticism is the TV which would benefit from having a bigger screen.
Mr Bevan
July 2005

December 2009
The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped and the welcome given by the owners on arrival, was second to none. Throughout our visit the owners could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The area is very beautiful with many places of interest to visit, including country parks, historic towns and castles and long beautiful beaches. Hadrian's Wall can be easily reached. April 2016
A wonderful location, and a superb cottage with all that you could wish for. Two charming owners nearby who were always on hand if needed.
December 2009
very friendly hosts, good welcome, there if you needed them with good local knowledge. 2 of use spent a week in the bungalow, lots of space, comfortable and clean. good kitchen although we did use some good eating places within 20 min drive.Own transport essential as location is a couple of miles out of the nearest village. Friendly chickens on site, location quiet, semi private garden to use. Good for getting to the coast, national trust properties in the area, good gentle walks and the cheviots nearby. nothing we didn't like.

December 2009
The bungalow was brilliant. Peaceful in the middle of fields, just countryside noises. The location is very near to lots of places on interest, including Warkworth Castle, Holy Island, Sunderland, Newcastle. The welcome was great, a tray for tea or coffee laid out including milk, with a bottle of wine in the fridge if required. My only comment would be there was no filled salt and pepper pot (very minor, but annoying just the same). We would certainly go back again if revisitng the area.
December 2009
when we found the cottage (you can miss the entrance if not careful)we found the owners very nice and friendly,(Pauline and Tony)we where shown round the cottage and found it nice and cosy, relaxing,a great aera to tour from we will visit again the furniture was relaxing to sit on.all in all we would go again
December 2009
The property is comfortable, well-equipped and in a pleasant rural setting. The bedroom and lounge are particularly nice though the kitchen is a bit on the small side. The rear garden is very attractive and looks out on to fields. The owners are very friendly and helpful though not at all obtrusive. The only minor negative aspect is the 4 chickens which, having been encouraged by previous occupants, wait at the patio or front door, expecting to be fed. It means that one can't leave the patio door open or else they will come in and one has to be careful where one walks due to their droppings. As a base for exploring Northumberland, it's excellent and it's also possible to do some walks starting at the cottage, providing one doesn't mind initially walking along the main road for a short distance.
