Upon arrival the property had not been cleaned, it was especially noticeable on the ground floor: • food bits on the dining room table • bits over the floor, especially the carpet in the living room • cooker stove had not been cleaned • sheets on the bed did not fit, but also did not look clean, with a stain near the head of the bed and a smell of being used. • hallway floor also had dirty footprints along it. • large amounts of lime scale in the kettle • The fridge/freezer drawers were dirty and bits of food left. We immediately phoned the number that had been provided, a cleaner came to clean and stayed for one hour and verified that it had not been cleaned. The owner later said that the property gets a weekly 4 hour clean! The cleaner mentioned we should have a welcome pack, but we never then later received one. Our issues continued the longer we stayed there, we noticed huge patches of mould along most of the window frames. There was also condensation inside the very old windows. The bathroom curtain was dirty/stained (*see photos) and because the curtain is not weighted in any way, it touched you while taking a shower. The bbq was so old it was unusable. The washing machine was very dirty and had obviously never been cleaned. It is impossible for me to take photos of the smell of the house, but on the whole it smelt musty and mouldy and half finished in parts, with some of the old floorboards untreated after the carpet had been lifted. The rugs on the back of the sofas, although looked good, were stale smelling, as if they hadn't been washed. It is of course an old property but did not feel or smell like it had been adequately cleaned before being rented out. Also, prior to our stay we double checked with the agents, Syke Cottages, if the bed was soft or hard and if King-sized or double. We were told it was a King-sized bed that was soft/medium, whereas what was used was a double-sized mattress topper that did not fit the bed. All round a very disappointing experience. I've noticed there are a number of bad reviews on here which are very disappointed with the quality of proper toes on Sykes Cottage website. Sykes Cottages also did not make our review of the property live neither did they phone us as they said they would. This company should be reported to trading standards as it is clearly not vetting the properties it is listing.
