The Old Smithy Countryside Cottage description

Holiday home
The Old Smithy is a lovely brick built barn conversion in the village of Hollington and has been converted with style and elegance to provide comfortable holiday accommodation. The open plan living area has a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and sitting area. The bedrooms consist of a super king-size double with en-suite freestanding bath and a twin with en-suite shower. A front patio outside makes The Old Smithy an ideal base to explore this lovely area.

Area
The charming village of Hollington is in the south of the Peak District, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is a collection of traditional cottages and farmhouses surrounded by rolling countryside and offers a number of hostelries that serve fine food and ales. Nearby is the lovely town of Ashbourne, home to some wonderful examples of Georgian architecture and interesting cobbled streets and alleyways, Ashbourne itself has a good selection of restaurants and a variety of shops, including a number of antique stores. The Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by and have many outdoor pursuits on offer including walking and cycling, but for a different kind of excitement Alton Towers is a 25 minute drive away. A great holiday spot.

Region
The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

A relaxing break with everything you want from a holiday. I would recommend The Old Smithy to anyone. The weather was kind, and the area was what I expected. We all enjoyed the break.

I absolutely cannot fault this property and the owner was delightful. The cottage is decorated beautifully and the bedroom with the giant bath, really is luxurious! The furnishings are all extremely comfy and there are plenty of plates and glasses etc. There is a lovely courtyard setting too. We will definitely be coming back, in fact we have looked to book again already, but it seems very popular. Excellent!

The cottage was very comfortable and contained everything we needed. It was spotlessly clean and the beds were very comfortable. There was plenty of room to spread out. It was great having an outdoor space where we could sit out in the evening.

The perfect little retreat. A fabulous welcome and a weekend of utter relaxation in an idyllic setting. The bed and linen were beautiful. Relaxing with a film in the wonderful open plan sitting room. Wish we could have booked a week.

Furnishings were high specification, in excellent condition, and sympathetic to the building. The bath is divine. The welcome was very warm, and ongoing contact pleasant but not intrusive. We would warmly recommend this cottage to anyone who would like a bit of luxury at the end of a walking day.

Everything about our stay at The Old Smithy was perfect. We booked a 5 night stay for our 'mini moon' after our wedding, and it was definitely the much needed rest and relaxation. A peaceful location. The owner was lovely and welcoming. The cottage itself was lovely. The local pub serves delicious food. All in all an excellent holiday.

On arrival the owner greeted us, she was very friendly and showed us around The Old Smithy. It exceeded our expectations, and was first class in every detail. The owner even put milk in the fridge and crumpets and jam for our first snack in our holiday home. It is just these attention to details that made our stay and holiday so special. All her animals, cats, dogs sheep and chickens were a delight. I know that the children who stayed were enthralled and entertained by the various characters of the animals. It was just, as Pop Larkin would say Perfick!!

It's our first time in Derbyshire and it is a lovely area. The only thing that spoilt it was the typical British weather! The cottage was fabulous and the owners very friendly and extremely helpful. We'd go again. Thanks.

Hot tub under the stars on a chilly winter evening, kitchen with everything you need and more, fantastic toasty fire - all in beautiful surroundings. Perfect way to spend a weekend, the only regret is we couldn't stay longer!

We stayed in the Smithy and had the most lovely time. The owners Julien and Philippa could not have been more friendly and helpful. We are hoping to return again in the near future. You can't get a better recommendation than that!

We stayed here for about 7 days and loved it. The property was lovely perfect for what we wanted. The owners are very friendly and lovely people greeted us when ever we see them had a good chat. This is situated in a very good area you are able to get to everything within about 5 minute drive and about 30 Minutes to the peak. I would highly recommend staying here with out a doubt.

The Old Smithy is very well situated for getting to all parts of the Peak District. The accommodation is very comfortable and tastefully decorated and furnished. Everything that you might need whilst self catering is provided. The outside space is an ideal area to sit in the evenings and watch the resident sheep in an adjacent field. (Neil was my favourite!!). Philippa was very welcoming and left us a delicious cake! I hope to return to stay there as soon as I can.

It can be stressful holidaying with children but Philippa & Julian are amazing hosts and put us at ease with their relaxed & friendly hospitality! We welcomed the delicious homemade cake. The boys loved feeding the sheep, choosing fresh eggs and walking Dave the dog (not sure who took who for a walk ??)! The cottage is stunning! We loved the bath and resented sharing it with the boys

My wife and I had just got married and due to the nature of our arrangements we were not going on honeymoon straight away so looked at renting a cottage for a few days before and after the wedding to which we could retreat to and just relax. The Old Smithy fitted the bill perfectly. Situated in the very quiet village of Hollington near Ashbourne it was close enough to the facilities you might need , shops, restaurants etc etc but nice and peacefull for a relaxing time. Phillippa the owner is a perfect host, we were even treated to homemade sponge cake waiting for us when we arrived. Excellent. Spotless property with all the mod cons you would expect in a holiday rental.

On arrival Phillipa the owner greeted us, very friendly and informative about the area. The Old Smithy was tatstefully decorated, the attention to detail on every level i.e. decoration, comfort and contemporary appliances was first class. It was full of character, as were the pets, which made the holiday special. Dopey Dogs, crazy cats, and serious sheep who studied every move made in the yard. Nothing too much trouble for the owners, but always discreet and non intrusive. The village pub served good food and Beer. Lovely area, plenty to see and do. Beautiful local walks, plenty of peace and quiet.. Perfick.

The cottage is beautiful, has a brilliant host and is in a great location which allows for some good walks and is within a 5 minute stroll to the local pub. The Old Smithy made a great relaxing break in the countryside and we wouldn't think twice about going again.

We booked The Old Smithy for a 5 night break after our wedding as we couldn't face travelling abroad....we are so glad that we did. The cottage is amazing in a lovely peaceful location with a lovely pub (serving delicious food) just a short walk away. The owner, Phillipa, welcomed us on arrival and was very friendly (as were the pet cats and dogs) and helpful. Perfect for a much needed break.

We really needed a getaway after a stressful December and this place hit the spot perfectly. We knew we'd dropped onto a good thing when we arrived and met Phillipa - she is fantastic, easygoing and has done a great job with the old Smithy. We had been hankering for some kick back time together and the cottage was perfect for that. The added touches of luxury - the stand alone bath, the super kingsize bed and in fact, all of the top floor, is a real oasis while downstairs is comfortable, warm and had everything we could need. We happened to have our first anniversary on the Sunday and Phillipa recommended a superb pub with great food. We also met Neil the sheep who is quote the character. It has great access to nearby walks including Dovedale which is just lovely. We will, without doubt, return. I'm saying I'd recommend it to a friend and I would, except I'm tempted to keep it to myself.

As a couple we have stayed in numerous locations throughout the UK & Ireland. This one we would have to say was perfect in every way, one the BEST in fact. Lovely location, very welcoming owners & pets. Everything we needed was provided and we thoroughly enjoyed the scones. We found it great for travelling to many locations within the area and even beyond. We would fully recommend "The old Smithy" to all. We have had a full 10 day relaxing Holiday and have enjoyed it thoroughly.
