The Old Workshop Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
This 19th Century, stone-built barn conversion adjoins the owner's home on a 10-acre smallholding between Picklescott and Pulverbatch. At just six miles from Church Stretton, this romantic retreat is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has been tastefully renovated to combine modern conveniences with original features. The property includes a large galleried bedroom with exposed oak beams and trusses, a warming wood-burning stove and a secluded, patio garden with views across the countryside. The property is close to all the local amenities of Church Stretton as well as being within easy reach of many activities.

Area
Set in the Shropshire Hills and adjacent to the Long Mynd, the village of Picklescott is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This little town is at the halfway point of a circular walk along country lanes, whilst the surrounding area is full of bridleways which make for excellent walking and cycling opportunities. Visitors can enjoy the stunning views from the Devil's Chair at nearby Stiperstones Nature Reserve, or take a trip to the picturesque market town of Church Stretton - boasting half-timbered buildings - just a six mile drive away. The medieval towns of Shrewsbury and Ludlow are also close by and boast impressive castles, excellent shops, restaurants and scenic, riverside walks. The World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, the amazing Roman ruins at Wroxeter and Stokesay Castle are all within easy driving distance.

Region
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

This is a delightful place to stay with great ambience and facilities which meet all practical needs. The hosts are most hospitable. Caerleon and the surrounding district offer a wealth of historic sites and outstanding natural beauty.

April 2016
The cottage is furnished to a high standard and was cosy and welcoming. The wood burner was very efficient and kept the cottage warm, even upstairs so the insulation was amazing. It had everything you need for a short stay and the hosts made sure everything was satisfactory. Nearby pubs served delicious food and the local people were friendly everywhere we went. It was a fabulous location for walking and getting away from it all. We can highly recommended.

The wood burning stove and unlimited logs were very welcome. The cottage is situated in beautiful countryside, with no light pollution or road noise, yet close to everywhere. The cottage is lovely and well thought out with absolutely everything you might need provided.

January 2016
The cottage is beautiful. A great combination of old stone character with more modern fixtures and fittings. Very well kept, peaceful and the wood burner was a real treat for a couple of lazy and cooler evenings and the owners kept us well stocked. Nearby we managed to squeeze a few things in in 4 days, namely Shrewsbury town centre, the local pub for a lovely lunch (The Bottle Glass) around 1.5 miles away, Church Stretton (Long Mynd walk) and the Ragleth Inn (Little Stretton) for another nice lunch. I would highly recommend this cottage.
Mr Winter

January 2015
It was a great relaxing break. A home away from home, I arrived late at night to a toasty warm cottage. The owners allowed me to get on with my stay and did not disturb, only to check in to see if more fire wood was needed. An excellent cottage that I will recommend highly to all.
Ms Fletcher
October 2014
The cottage was beautiful - a good size for two people. The sitting area was spacious and the bedroom took up the whole of the upstairs floor with a lovely exposed beamed ceiling. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the cottage was well-equipped without being cluttered. The wood burner made it really cosy, and the location for walking is superb. The owners were very helpful and welcoming.
Mr Tucker

The owners were very friendly and helpful and we found the cottage cosy and welcoming. It was lovely to arrive and find the stove lit and snowdrops on the windowsill, small touches that made us feel very welcome.

It was a very peaceful, secluded spot to have a holiday cottage. The hosts left us in peace and it was really wonderful.
Mr Codd
January 2012
The peace and quiet and the total lack of street lighting around the cottage made it feel that you were in the middle of nowhere although it is not far to the lovely towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury. We loved the log burner which kept the cottage cosy and warm. We loved looking at the shooting stars in the sky on clear nights. Good walks from the cottage. Loved it.
Mr Codd
January 2012
In a great location if you like total peace and quiet. The Ludlow food centre on the A49 has some wonderful local produce.
Mr Pledger
October 2011
The location is excellent with lovely views. Sadly the local pub's closed down but there are plenty of others a short drive away. The cottage is near to lots of attractions but based in the heart of the country. Who can ask for more?

April 2011
The whole family was very welcoming and helpful but not intrusive at all. The property was spotlessly clean and fresh and felt really homely. We had the best holiday ever and will definitely consider going back there. We cannot recommend or praise it highly enough. Thank you.

Ms Murphy
May 2011
The cottage was even better than we expected; so clean and cosy. We were left to enjoy a peaceful holiday but when we did request anything our request was dealt with straight away. Loads of information in cottage about things to see and walks to do - all vital when new to an area. We would love to stay again.
Mr Miller

So I read some reviews prior to booking and yes the cottage is down some single track roads but wasn't really a big deal. The cottage is beautiful. A great combination of old stone character with more modern fixtures and fittings. Very well kept, peaceful and the wood burner was a real treat for a couple of lazy and cooler evenings and the owners kept us well stocked. Nearby we managed to squeeze a few things in in 4 days, namely Shrewsbury town centre, the local pub for a lovely lunch (The Bottle & Glass) around 1.5 miles away (a nice fresh walk), Church Stretton (Long Mynd walk) and the Ragleth Inn (Little Stretton)for another nice lunch. I would highly recommend this cottage.

This was a last minute booking for us - we did not know the area at all. We were assured that it was a lovely location for walking and just relaxing. Completely accurate! In fact probably better than anticipated. The conversion of this old workshop has been done beautifully - real quality carpentry. The bedroom with huge exposed beams is something to behold! It is a very rural location which is great for the peace and quiet - but the lanes are very narrow and the first approach was a bit daunting but the directions were accurate - we just needed to trust them!! It was a pity that one of the local pubs had closed recently but another had reopened and the young couple running it deserve to do well. If you love the peace and quiet of the country this is for you!

We absolutely loved our stay here.We could not believe how peaceful the surroundings were.Just a short drive to Shrewsbury with a very handy Sainsburys.About 20 mins to Ludlow which really is lovely. The cottage had everything you could possibly need and the view out the windows and from the patio was amazing. The log fire made it so cozy on winter nights.Would definately stay here again if we return to Shropshire.

Perfectly equipped and proportioned holiday let for two people. Tucked away in the middle of the Shropshire countryside it feels remote and isolated, but is only a short drive from a couple of villages with a choice of decent pubs nearby. Well placed for access to the Long Mynd, Stiperstones, and Wenlock Edge, it makes a good base for a walking holiday. If you are looking for some quiet down-time then this is the place to stay, but be prepared to wash your car at the end of the week - the local lanes get very muddy from the farm traffic!

It would be good idea if a night light was installed on the stair case as the toilet on thr ground floor for ssfety if you have to get in the night thank you Lawrence .

We absolutely loved staying here. One of the things we loved was how remote the cottage seemed yet it wasn't actually that far away from the towns of Shrewsbury and Ludlow. We also liked looking at the stars on a night which were so clear due to the lack of street lights. The road from the A49 is really winding and very narrow but if you take your time and are patient it is not an issue. The log burner makes the cottage very warm and cosy and the whole cottage is built beautifully especially the woodwork. If going to Ludlow try the Courtyard Restaurant which serves great food and also The Ludlow Food Centre on the A49.We hope to return someday to the beautiful area.

If you really want to unwind away from the city, this is the place to go. Surrounded by pure nature, it is the perfect place to relax. There is a lot to do just a few miles away. On our stay, we actually never left the Shropshire borders. The only thing that was a bit too exciting was the drive to the house. Be aware of oncoming farm traffic on the 2.5 miles single track to the house. But if you are trained in reversing around bends, this is not really a problem, just charming. My driver disagrees ;-) He did not like it.

For those people who like remote quiet places then this location fits the bill. A 2 mile slow drive down a relatively quiet, single lane/track with twists & turns, blind corners, agricultural machinery, cows etc but the location is well worth the drive. There is a quieter route across country to Church Stretton which I do recommend. This area is great for those that like walking; too many to chose from. Owners of the Old Workshop were helpful & friendly.

Very nice cottage with a beautiful garden. Ideal for sitting out in during the evening after a long walk. Ideally placed for couples wanting a quiet holiday with access to plenty of walks. Cottage bedroom layout was exceptional. Just beware of the very narrow roads in the area, until you reach Church Stretton.

This was the most wonderful cottage to stay for a holiday in the most beautiful of settings. Unfortunately my husband fell down the stairs during the night on our 3rd night which disrupted our plans somewhat as he sustained severe bruising to his back and shoulder. This has, however, not put us off from staying there again sometime in the future.

An excellent stay with everything provided without any intrusivness. A beuatifull and tastefull accomodation that is a pleasure to be in. Rural location, very quiet and a good location for exploring Shropshire. The high standard of the accomodation was a delight and the location was ideal for a very quiet holiday. The location is approached by winding, narrow lanes which are not for the faint-hearted!

We found the cottage to be very comfortable for two people. The accomodation is well laid out, clean and tidy, and having most of what you may require for your stay. It was nice having a log burning stove in the living room for chilly evenings, the logs being provided. The cottage is located in beautiful country side, but the lanes to access it are very narrow, and must be treated with great caution. Fortunately, traffic is light. There are many interesting places to visit nearby, both within Shropshire and over the border in Wales. If you and your loved one are considering visiting the Old Workshop, our response would be, GO FOR IT!

My husband and I stayed here in June 09. We arrived somewhat bereft having put to sleep our wonderful old goldie, Heidi the day before. What a fabulous place. Fantastic views, fantastic barn conversion, just superb. The couple who owned the property were just lovely, left us fresh eggs from the hens and Nel the farm dog - restored our hearts and helped the healing commence. The surrounding area is just beautiful and we walked to the local pub (quite a hike) with Nel and what a great place. Overall cannot recommend this place highly enough. The overall surrounding area is just so beautiful. We will return, having now rescued another dog a few months later!
