The Retreat description

Holiday home
This exceptional detached barn conversion has retained the character of the building and boasts exposed beams in many of the rooms. It has been stylishly furnished to a high standard and is a lovely, romantic hideaway for a couple. The accommodation is all on ground level with a modern, well equipped fitted kitchen on open plan with a dining area and sitting room with a contemporary plasma fire making it a cosy and welcoming space. The spacious bedroom has a calm and elegant atmosphere with an en-suite wet room, outside the barn is a lovely garden with a barbecue and furniture. There is a shop two miles away and a pub just a five minute walk from the property. A fabulous location for a romantic holiday.

Area
The village of Hollington is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and is a scattered village consisting of traditional brick built cottages, farmhouses and barn conversions. Surrounded by glorious rolling countryside and farmland the village is steeped in history and makes a lovely peaceful base for a holiday. Nearby is the quintessentially English market town of Ashbourne with its cobbled streets, coaching inns and old market stalls. Ashbourne has a variety of shops and restaurants and is a delight for antique collectors. Outdoor pursuits are well catered for with many walking and cycling trails close to the area, including the Dove and Manifold valleys. For the young, and young at heart Alton Towers theme park offers thrills for the whole family to enjoy.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

The whole break was excellent. A wonderful cottage to stay in and the owner was very helpful. If you want to stay in a place to forget what's going on, this is the place to stay.

Great accommodation, even nicer than the images. The owner was friendly, informative and very helpful. Would recommend to all family and friends looking for an ideal break. Plenty to do but also a great place to rest and relax.

Aptly named The Retreat, we had a brilliant time here. We went home totally chilled and ready for the new term at work! The owners were really welcoming and friendly. We loved to relax in the small but beautiful garden. The cottage was clean and tidy and so comfy. The area was beautiful. I would recommend this to anyone. Ten out of ten!

It was a lovely quiet area and and a peaceful setting. Ideal for a relaxing break, but not too far from local pub and restaurant and other amenities, and our hosts were very friendly.

The hosts both made us feel like it was a home from home with a warm welcome and the feeling nothing was any trouble to them. The cottage was an excellent size, well kept and quiet but within easy striking distance of the tourist areas.

The fact that we were left in peace. It was also nice to have the choice to either cook for ourselves or eat out at one of the many local pubs/restaurants.

Many thoughtful extras provided. A lovely, warm and comfortable home.

They provided extensive information about local sights and activities. The property suited the two of us perfectly, feeling both cosy and spacious due to the clever open plan design. It felt private, occupying one side of a courtyard, a sense that was helped by the sunny separate garden.

All the accommodation was on one level. The wet room was an added bonus that we really liked. The owner was really nice and helpful. Also her cats, dogs pet sheep were most enjoyable and of course the scenery was amazing.

The property owners and their family made us feel very welcome. The lovely friendly animals from Barry the Cockerill to Davina the Sheep and lovely Frisky the Dog made our stay that extra bit special!! Also, the owner gave us great ideas for things to do and places to eat. The Retreat was a perfect romantic, but fun getaway and I will recommend it to all my friends.

Just arrived back for our mid week break and have to say we are fully relaxed and switched off. The Retreat enabled us to 'get away from it all' in really great accommodation and surroundings. We spent valentines night at The Saracens Head which was a lovely treat. The hosts are wonderful and friendly and are to hand if you need them but leave you to relax also. We had everything we needed and the bed was so comfy our lie ins got later and later! Thank you Phillipa, Julian, Neil (the sheep), Archie (the very friendly cat) & co x

Me and my partner were looking for a relaxing few days away over a weekend for my birthday, we were looking for something not too far away but something a little different. We thought the pictures of the property looked nice and decided to book, we were very happy with the property when we arrived, while the pictures look nice actually when you see it in person its even better. The owners have done a great job on this property. The peak district itself has some lovely views, your able to go out in the day then come back to a nice place to relax and watch some tv or just read. We had a great time and im pretty sure we will come back in the future for another short break away.

The property name says it all! Everything you need for a fantastic stay and a comfy bed. The owner is on hand for any help or information. The place is in the countryside as you would expect being a barn conversion. A gem of a property.

We would recommend this holiday retreat to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing and romantic break away from everything. The Retreat cottage is beautifully decorated, very comfortable with everything you would need. The owners are very friendly and will help in anyway they can. We had our 18 month old son with us who enjoyed the daily routine of feeding the very friendly sheep in the next field. The only time we left the Retreat was to visit the nearby pub for lunch, which is also great. The only negative I have is we were under the impression we had a shared hot tub, and discovered we didn't when we arrived there. I had spoken to sykes the day I booked who didn't inform me differently, so when I called back regarding this I was spoken to very rudely and told I was wrong.....Very poor.......But that has nothing to do with this wonderful place, if your going to book it, go straight through the owner, NOT through Sykes.

Have just returned from a very enjoyable week in the Derbyshire Dales, we stayed at the excellent and aptly named Retreat in Hollington which is well placed for visiting the local tourist spots and only a short ride to the magnificent Dovedale. We arrived in Hollington having travelled nearly 190 miles in torrential rain and tackling flooded local roads, not sure what to expect on our arrival. We shouldn't have worried our host Phillipa was there in the rain to give us a warm welcome and show us around The Retreat. On arrival we were treated to Jam and Scones which were most appreciated after our long journey. The property is a converted barn and Garage which has been transformed into an open plan holiday home and has been decorated to the highest degree and equipped with everything you will need to make your holiday complete, unfortunately the hot tub was not included in our package although is available for the larger property's. The cottage is equipped with a wet room which made showering a pleasure. The Bedroom is partitioned off by a curtain and is a good size and has a very comfortable bed with a duck down quilt, very snug. Free wifi is a godsend when looking for opening times of attractions and directions. The kitchen has all the equipment you would expect from a quality let and the lounge dining area was well set out and tastefully furnished. We were well looked after and made to feel welcome by Phillipa, Julian, George and Annabelle not to mention the family pets. The Red Lion is within a short walking distance and does excellent good value meals, try the Sunday Roast and Rib Eye Steak, mouth watering and tender. Places to visit, Arkwrights Mill Matlock, very interesting demo on old weaving machines, Eyam plague village, Critch Tram Museum, Monsell Head, Haddon and Hardwick Halls. We enjoyed our stay at The Retreat and will return in the near future.

After a long journey up, we were greeted by the very friendly Phillipa. She happily showed us around the retreat and had made sure there was some delicious cake and tea ready. Fresh eggs from the local chickens were greatly appreciated for breakfast too. The cottage is even nicer than it looks in the pictures with everything you could possibly want provided; every piece of kitchen equipment we could think of, tv, dvds, wifi, decent shower. The fire was lovely to warm up to of an evening and the bedding was amazingly soft for a great sleep after a busy day. The leaflets in the boxes were a great help when deciding where to cycle/walk/explore and this spot was a great base, with just a short drive to everywhere we visited.

My wife and I spent a wonderful weeek at the cottage in early December 2009. We found it a perfect venue to relax and explore the immediate countryside which is superb. The village has a great feel to it with a friendly local pub serving good pub food and decent real ales. The owners were very welcoming and provided fresh eggs from the hens who roam in the back paddock! The accomodation was perfect for our requirements for the week and was clean and modern. You have miles of great walking and cycling areas literally on your doorstep and you are very close to the Peak District. Highly recommend it.
