The Shavings Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
The Shavings occupies an excellent location on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Just 2.5 miles from Buxton, this charming studio apartment is set on the ground floor of an old stone barn on a working farm in the hamlet of Cowdale. The Shavings' welcoming and comfortable accommodation includes an open plan studio room with a 4ft double bed, a well equipped fitted kitchen area with breakfast bar and a sitting area. There are numerous diverse and enjoyable walks that start from The Shavings' doorstep, and wonderful market towns offering gorgeous local food and drink. This is a cosy and value for money holiday home for those who want to sample all that the Peak District has to offer.

Buxton is home to many magnificent buildings and gardens, thanks to the patronage of the successive Dukes of Devonshire. The splendour that characterizes the buildings of the town was created in the 18th and 19th centuries including the semi-circular Crescent, Hall Bank, The Pavilion Gardens, The Square, The Great Stable and The Opera House. The history of the town goes back much further, to when the Romans came to Buxton, drawn by the constant 28 degrees centigrade of the bubbling waters of Buxton's eight thermal springs. Every year, Buxton hosts the Festival of Music and Arts, and the Opera House offers a full programme of performances. The ruggedly beautiful peaks and gentle hills of the Peak District make this area a wonderful location for lovers of the great outdoors.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

Skirting heaters and electric fire in sitting area. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, TV, DVD, WiFi. Shared use of laundry room with washer/dryer. Fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair on request. Shared outdoor sitting area with furniture. Ample off road parking. One well-behaved dog welcome. Sorry, no smoking. Shop and pubs 2.5 miles (Buxton). Note: Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

This is a lovely downstairs studio in a stone-built cottage on a working farm near Buxton. It's quiet and the owners are really nice, so helpful and they provide a welcome pack with a bottle of wine if your journey, as ours was, is long and exhausting. Very pet friendly.

This cottage was set in an ideal location for travelling around the area. We enjoyed returning to the warm and cosy cottage each day after our long walks. There is a bus stop on the A6 just a 5-10 minute walk away. We used the bus several times, leaving the car behind. The owners were always very friendly and helpful too. We would definitely stay here again.

June 2011
We spent two weeks at the Shavings. We especially liked living on a working farm, actually a large verdant property focused on boarding and care of horses. There was plenty of activity yet we had total privacy. Buxton, two miles away, is lovely. The Derbyshire countryside is more than lovely. We used it as an excellent base for rural walking.
Ms Kiersey

We have just returned home after a lovely week in this area. The shavings is perfect for a couple and dog. Comfortable accommodation with all amenities we needed. Clean and tidy cottage with own parking, greeted by a pack of cookies and fresh milk. There is plenty of heating so this can be used all year. From the visitors book there appears people on their 7 and 8th visit's. Can't recommend highly enough. So thank you for a lovely stay. We may well returned if you have a vacancy. Would recommend you use the A515 access on your first visit and avoid the A6 side until you find your way around.
Mr Thomas
May 2009
The owners were welcoming, friendly and approachable.
September 2011
The owners were helpful nice people who made us very welcome. We enjoyed our stay very much
August 2012
Terrific value for money. Excellent kitchen, and pretty much everything else you could need, with parking right outside. There is also a small seating area on the patio. The location is very convenient for both outdoor activities and for visiting Buxton: you feel you are in the middle of the countryside, but the town is only a couple of miles away. I would just be aware that you have another bedroom on top of you in the upstairs accommodation, and if young children are staying there you are likely to be woken early in the morning. A bonus is the shared laundry: very useful to have a washing machine available.
November 2012
We spent a few days at The Shavings in September. We loved the quiet location and we felt very welcome indeed. The owner showed us everything and suggested things to do & see in the area. The cottage is just the right size for a couple, with a fully equipped kitchen and a very comfortable bed. There was one slight problem: the cottage smelled a little damp and some wooden cooking utensils were mouldy but we alerted the owner to this when we left, because it really wasn't a big deal - he was shocked and apologized. It seems that a pipe in the kitchen wall was causing problems. He said he was going to have it looked immediately. We will probably be back - next time with our dog! I would recommend this cottage to people who want some peace and quiet. As it's a working farm, there is the occasional farm noise but nothing that bothered us. People with allergies to mould etc might want to check ahead if the problem has been fixed.
May 2011
The Shavings was a compact rental, with all the amenities that you would expect. The very friendly owners were on hand to show us around and offer advice on places to visit, they had ensured that we had fresh milk to see us through until the next day.It was hard to believe that this place was so close to the main a6 road because situated as it is atop a hill, via a wooded valley, you could have been miles from the nearest habitation. Of course the stunning Peak District all around us was the icing on the cake. Would not be able to recommend this highly enough, more than value for money. Thank you!
November 2010
we enjoyed our stay at the shavings, everyone was very friendly and helpful The only complaint we had was, the sink in the bathroom which was too small and leaked all over thr floor coseqently we had to wash in the kitchen sink
December 2009
We were made to feel very welcome. The property was clean, well-equipped and set in a beautiful area. Everything we wanted for a short break for two people, thanks!
July 2010
The property is located in a very quiet hamlet a couple of miles outside Buxton. If you are happy to drive everywhere including to the pub, shop, restaurant etc then you will be fine. The property was very cosy, clean, and well maintained and is a good size for a couple.
