The Stables is a detached property that enjoys far reaching, rural views of the Isle of Oxney. Built in 1690, the local pub is steeped in the area’s smuggling past, when contraband was brought in from across the marshes. The property is also ideally placed for walkers exploring the Saxon Shore Way, which runs 163 miles from Gravesend in Kent to Hastings in East Sussex, following the coastline as it was about 1700 years ago. The pretty village of Wittersham is 2½ miles away, and at Wittersham Station you can board the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway, which chugs through glorious countryside to the fairytale moated castle at Bodiam. Tenterden, with its weatherboarded houses and tea rooms, is aptly described as “the jewel of the Weald”, and is well worth a visit. There’s the National Trust-owned Small Hythe Place, where actress Helen Terry once lived. Explore the many local vineyards, and don’t miss the medieval town of Rye with its cobbled streets, and the rolling sand dunes at Camber just 10 miles away. Fishing nearby (Shirkoak Fisheries, £12 per day for 2 rods, children £5). Beach 9½ miles. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 1¼ miles.
