Thornlea Family Cottage description

Holiday home
Thornlea is a modern detached bungalow situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire market town of Richmond. With two bedrooms (one double and one twin) and a family bathroom, this cottage is able to sleep four people. It also contains a modern, fitted kitchen and sitting room with a dining area and French windows. Outside the cottage is a garden with a patio and furniture as well as off road parking. Thornlea is in an excellent location for a group of friends or a family, looking to explore all that Richmond and North Yorkshire have to offer.

The ancient market town of Richmond is situated at the entrance to Swaledale, a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. With a maze of cobbled streets and narrow alleys – or 'wynds' – this town has over nine centuries of history. Growing up around the castle - a Norman fortress dating back to 1071 – Richmond literally means 'strong hill' and is derived from the Old English 'Riche-mont'. The River Swale runs through the town itself and provides not only lovely walks, but also safe paddling areas and the occasional small waterfall. Radiating from the market place, where a weekly market and monthly farmer's market are still observed, the lovely cobbled streets are lined with numerous shops, pubs and restaurants.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Gas central heating with electric fire. Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, automatic washer, TV with Freeview, DVD player, CD/radio/cassette player, WiFi. All fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair. Sun trap garden area with patio and garden furniture. Off road parking. Sorry, no pets and no smoking. Richmond town centre is 1 mile (bus stop adjacent to cottage), shop 5 mins walk, pubs 1 mile.

As we had previously stayed at Thornlea before, we knew exactly what to expect of the cottage, and we were over the moon to be able to book it at quite short notice when most of the year is fully booked. The owners live next door but never make you feel as if Big Brother is watching you. A very enjoyable and stress-free break; we will definitely return!

One of the easiest holiday cottages I have booked. From first booking with yourselves, the experience was a pleasure. The owners were very friendly, living next door, nothing too much trouble for them, they were there if you needed them but not intrusive at all. A welcome pack was in the cottage to start the holiday which included a bottle of wine. It was a very enjoyable holiday, and a cottage I would use again.
Mr Farthing

This cottage is ideally situated on the very edge of Richmond and perfect to use as a base from which to have days out around North Yorkshire. The location, and the warmth and 'cosiness' of the cottage was top class. The owners living next door were there if we needed any thing and the welcome tray when we arrived after a long journey was very welcome. We look forward to returning to this property when we visit this area again.

The friendly personal service from the owners who lived adjacent to the bungalow (a welcome note, bottle of Cava for our wedding celebrations, milk in the fridge, tea, coffee, sugar, filter papers, washing up liquid, paper towels, washing powder, bin bags and a personal visit to make sure we arrived ok). We felt the bungalow offered general warmth comfort on arrival.

A warm friendly welcome from the owners together with flowers on the table, milk in the fridge and a bottle of wine and black sheep beer on the table! (as well as the more usual tea, coffee and sugar). Fantastic view from the sitting room across the vale, and a suntrap to sit in when one wished, in a colourful garden. Unobtrusive help available when required.

The cottage was well placed for touring the area and was very well equipped. Richmond town centre was a reasonable walking distance away. The footpath next to the cottage provided a pleasant walk to Easby Abbey. The traffic from the main road was never intrusive. The garden was very pleasant for sitting in and at night was visited by bats.

December 2004
Level walk to the shop and countryside walks from the door. Garden attracts lots of birds.
December 2011
From the welcoming bottle of wine one the table when we arrived, we knew that we were going to enjoy this break, and were not disappointed! It was a beautiful bungalow, with lovely views out over rolling fields and hills, so tranquil. We have visited Richmond many times before, but never stopped in a holiday home there and were 'over the moon' with the cottage for location and a comprehensive list of fixtures/fitttings. The owners were ever so friendly(next door) but without that 'big brother is watching you' attitude! Truly a lovely holiday home which we will return to, if we may, Thank you on behalf of my wife and I.
Mr Berry
December 2004
Richmond was a lovely town - and a great centre for exploring the rest of North Yorkshire
Mr Bridges

Comfortable accommodation, ideally situated for exploring the area.
February 2011
I required a small cottage for a weekend stay, and this was in a good location on the outskirts of Richmond and good value. Service was excellent with milk in the fridge and mince pies on the table when we arrived!
December 2009
A good time was had by all four of us .the cottage was very well laid out, as my mother in law has limited movement, but we found this to be just the idel place, as they are no steps to tackle The welcome tray that was left for us was so nice, oweners were next door and are very very nice will love to go back to this cottage at some time in the future
December 2009
Good value for money. Bit lacking on culinary utensils. Bedrooms on small side. Pleasant walking and walking distance to Richmond etc.
