Top House Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
Top House is a detached farmhouse in the small Shropshire village of Northwood close to the market towns of Wem, Whitchurch and Ellesmere. The cottage contains a family suite of rooms (one king size double with ensuite and adjoining bedroom with 1 single and 1 junior bed), two further doubles (one with an ensuite), one twin and one room with adults bunks which with the addition of a family bathroom makes this cottage suitable for up to thirteen people. The rest of the accommodation is made up of a large fitted kitchen with a dining area and two sitting rooms, one of which has a woodburner whilst the other contains a sofa bed. Outside the cottage is off road parking for 5 cars, lockable bike storage, a large lawned garden with an orchard, a patio, outdoor furniture and a BBQ. Beautifully decorated and well situated for exploring the local area, Top House is bound to appeal to all ages and all types of holiday makers.

Area
The village of Northwood nestles between the Shropshire market towns of Wem and Ellesmere and consists of a handful of houses and an excellent pub with adjoining restaurant. Historic Wem has provided a central point for local trade since Saxon times and its weekly market still holds this tradition attracting visitors from across the county. The town of Ellesmere, with its medieval streets littered with Georgian and Victorian houses and half-timbered buildings, is situated just 6 miles away, amidst an area known as Shropshire's Lakeland and offers an abundance of shops, pubs and fine restaurants. Take a boat trip across the magnificent glacial mere out onto the Llangollen canal or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the picturesque Arboretum and Cremorne Gardens with its wonderful wildlife and scenic walks.

Region
A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

The property was very secluded which we loved. The House had plenty of space for 6 adults, 4 children and our little Yorkie. Absolutely loved the kitchen and the sunsets through the kitchen windows were just breathtaking. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

We loved the house. It was ideal for us as a family group of 8 adults and 5 children, especially the huge garden and the playroom which kept the children good. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and very well equipped, and we would not hesitate to go back again. It would be lovely to go back in summer.

We celebrated a 60th birthday for 'Nana' and enjoyed a lovely week at Top House. It was a superb property which had a beautiful dining kitchen with bi fold doors to huge lawned area, was very well equipped and had two large sitting rooms. It was peaceful and quiet but within reasonable driving distance of many superb areas worth a visit to cater for all tastes. It was nice that we could bring our Jack Russell Bella, she loved it too! Will be back.

The house was equipped with lots of toys and books that the children really enjoyed. The gardens were amazing. There were plenty of places to visit around the area suitable for adults and children so we always had something to do.

Perfect for a family get together with small children. We had twins of one and a two year old and everything we needed was there, with thoughtful touches to make it safe and welcoming.

Top House is excellent for a large party - we were 6 adults 4 children aged 8 to 13. It was exceptionally well equipped. We have stayed in several large houses and this was definitely one of the best.

The property was generously fitted and the two sitting rooms worked well so that the grandchildren could play in one room whilst the older members of the party could use the other room. The property and fittings were clean and well prepared for our arrival, the garden and facilities were perfect, safe, and beautifully maintained. We would not hesitate to recommend this property for a large family gathering.

It was a great place to stay for a large family holiday. The garden was safe for the children to play in and there were toys already there for them to play with. The kitchen was very large, looking out on to the garden which meant we spent most of our time in the kitchen. The house is very central to many attractions.

The house was ideal for a large family party with a fantastic garden suitable for children and outdoor games. The surrounding area offered something of interest to all ages; Shrewsbury, a lovely city to visit, is within easy reach, as is Ludlow and Llangollen. A high point for children and the energetic was a visit to Hawkstone Park. A good selection of eating places close by.

Lovely touch being greeted with cakes. The house was beautiful, a real homely feel to it. Fantastic facilities and great value for money. The photos were a real reflection of the house which can be rare. Overall it was a great weekend with some lovely walks nearby, a real escape to the country. The house is well capable of holding big groups of people.

The house was fine generally, with good quality bed-linen, well-stocked with glasses, coffee machines and fridges! It was a good place for our extended family get-together. The children loved the garden, especially the friendly pony over the fence. It felt safe and was very peaceful.

Fabulous wrap around garden, immaculately kept, which the children enjoyed immensely. There were bags of room in the house and the second lounge was ideal to contain children and toys! More than enough crockery and cutlery for the 10 of us.

The house was spacious, brilliantly equipped furnished. All our requirements were catered for. The ground floor bedroom and toilet were invaluable for my elderly mother. Having TVs in more than one room was a godsend in the evenings.

Everything was perfect and so welcoming. There was even a TV times, chocolates on the tree, a box of chocolates on the kitchen table and fairy lights in the kitchen. We did a lot of cooking over Christmas and we were not short of any equipment, pots or pans. The house was warm and cosy and the walks near the house were wonderful.

July 2012
The house had a fabulous kitchen, a wonderful garden and comfortable beds. Plenty of pots and pans, loads of space, and the local pub served reasonably priced food. Easily the best house we have ever rented and we have been renting cottages and houses for several years now.

September 2011
The cottage was wonderful, especially the kitchen and garden. As a keen cook, I am used to taking lots of kitchen equipment with me, but at Top House I need not have bothered. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked. It was also an ideal place for everybody to sit and chat while cooking. The garden was very good too and the children had a great time playing on the slide. The house was perfectly laid out, and the toys were particularly appreciated by our 3 1/2 year and and 18 month old. They hardly looked at their own toys all week. It was a fabulous holiday and we are already looking at when we could return to Top House.

So disappointing! The property has the potential to be outstanding, size of property, a great setting, superb gardens & proximity to great places to visit. Unfortunately other than the kitchen/dining area, we found many issues with the property: - stains on the lounge carpet - overall cleanliness of property very poor - washing up bowl a health hazard - bedding in the bedroom to the right of the stairs had not been changed - at least 30% of the crockery chipped - although a washing machine is available, advised only to use in emergencies Our disappointment & frustration is that these things are not difficult to fix, but are simply being overlooked!

I am utterly perplexed at some of the poor reviews!! The house is an outstanding place to stay and brilliantly situated for what has been a memorable and enjoyable holiday! The Top House is totally equipped for every need and the owner clearly cares for her customers. Beautifully clean and spacious rooms a delightful kitchen which is a great space for the family. Lovely warm and cosy lounge with a great log burner with wood provided by the owner. The outdoor space is superb and the children and our dog had great fun in the garden. A washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher provided and beds are so comfy! We would love to come back and we will recommend to anybody.

Nice location and not too far to the local pub. Everyone was friendly in there. Nice play area and lake at Ellesmere for the children to have a run around.

May 2011
For a family trip, with a mixture of kids and adults, this is great. There's plenty of room in the garden and the kids can have their own lounge. You can sleep 13 and that would be fine for a load of adults, but I think with kids you are better off taking advantage of the available space. We didn't do any outings as the idea was to relax. There was no problem doing that. All in all a great place to stay and I'd have no hesitation in going back.

May 2012
Top House was overall an excellent holiday property. We especially liked the huge kitchen diner with the doors which we could fold right back to open on to the patio and lovely garden. As we were lucky with the weather, we made very good use of this feature.

After a dark, rainy traffic filled Friday night drive we were greeted by a beautiful warm, friendly house with tasty coffee cakes on the table as we arrived. The first thing that struck me was the house was like the photos, countless times I have been to places that look like the Buckingham Palace online and you arrive to something more comparable to what you see on grime busters. The house was incredibly well equip with plenty of pots, pans, wine glasses, serving dishes, gravy jugs and even right down to egg cups. The house had such a homely feel with plenty of books, games, dvd's and with a trip down memory lane with the cd collection. I went through Sykes Cottages who provided a well organised seamless service. They have people available to answer any questions till late in the evening and at weekends which was great with organising the trip around work. The lady in the local pub 'The Horse and Jockey' was very friendly and helped with directions getting to the cottage as I could not get hold of the owner. When we visited on the Saturday night for food, it was okay pub grub, very quiet with only a couple of locals and with below average service which was disappointing after such fantastic experience whilst contacting them over the phone. Nonetheless it was great to have somewhere within walking distance. Slight glitches with the house were the windows and doors were terribly fitted and it was a real struggle opening and closing them. I found the owner a little abrupt when I called for extra details and to arrange key collection. The ten o'clock departure was very early, especially as they arrived to prepare the cottage dead on 10am. Overall it was a great weekend with some lovely walks nearby, a real escape to the country. The house is well capable of holding big groups of people without being either overly big or cramp. I couldn't have hoped for a more perfect place. I definitely recommend and should the occasion occur I will be returning.

Great outdoor space, even for 6 children with bikes! Lovely area. Don't miss Ironbridge - lots to do and family ticket covers everything.

June 2011
Good sized house that easily sleeps 12-13 people comfortably situated about 30 minutes drive away from centre of Shrewsbury. Big tesco about the same distance away and smaller tescos nearby. Place is well equiped and clean on arrival. Good sized lounge with large tv and dvd player. Big kitchen space with everything you would need present. Nice big garden and patio area if the weather is nice. Rooms are nice and comfortable with 4 double beds spread around the house. The only thing is that phone reception is quite low in the area so if you just want to get away, great. However, if you still need to communicate frequently then you need to go outside to get some signal or walk around the house. No Wifi in house which would be useful for people trying to plan things on laptops etc.

Great for a family get together. Facilities were good and the only criticism is the oven was too small for a large gathering, it needs to be larger and have more rings on the hob - a range would be better for that size accommodation. Besides that it was a lovely house which created the perfect atmosphere for a special family occasion.

We had a great week at top house and were extremely lucky with the weather. There were 6 adults (3 couples), a 4 year old, an infant and a dog. There was plenty of space with 2 of the rooms unused. The house had 2 high chairs and a decent cot for the baby and the master bedroom had a connected children's bedroom for our son. The house has the most amazing garden that is fairly contained which was great for our dog and son. The garden is really well maintained which is unusual for a rental and we spent lots of time sat outside using the BBQ. The kitchen is a really decent size and the doors open up so you can really enjoy the weather and garden. There are two lounges so we utilised one as a play room and it does have lots of children's toys, games & dvd's. The only downside is there is not much within walking distance. We were really unimpressed when we popped for a drink in the horse & jockey. Unfriendly, unwelcoming, poor choice. We stayed for one drink and left and wouldn't consider eating there. There are far better options in Wem (the castle) or welshampton (the sun inn). We really enjoyed our week and would definitely recommend it.
