February 2016
I was particularly looking for a cottage that was tucked away in the middle of nowhere, with excellent walks from the doorstep and had a warm cosy feel with an open fire. This cottage exceeded my expectations and I had a lovely time here. The kitchen was well-stocked, there was firewood, kindling and coals provided, the rooms were warm and the beds are comfortable. The living room was cosy with nice views out of the windows and the walks from the cottage were great: rivers, glades, rock formations, crags and up through woodlands into the open fells. I didn't see anyone whilst I was there (except tiny spots in the distance)! I will be coming back!

This was just ideal for us. The cottage was beautifully appointed, warm, clean and very quiet. The whole valley was quite unspoilt, like going back to the Lake District as it was 50 years ago.

We stayed there for 4 days and enjoyed every minute, the cottage was very cosy and full of personal touches. It was clean and everything you need for your stay, we had the pleasure of meeting the lady who owns it and what a lovely lady she was. Ideal for peace and quiet if that's what you are looking for, my springer loved the freedom and plenty of walks to go on, would recommend and will definitely be going back. Thank you for letting us stay at your cottage.

This has to be the BEST cottage we have ever stayed in. We have never seen such a well stocked home. The owner obviously loves her home and ensures that visitors are catered for in every way possible. It was quiet, just how we like it, yet only 10 minutes from one of the best pubs in the Lake District. I honestly couldn't find fault with anything at all. We loved every minute and would definitely recommend it to anyone seeking peace and tranquility. LOVED IT!

The property was very well equipped, in fact we didn't need to take the things we usually have to take and the fuel was very generous. The cottage is in a very remote spot, ideal if you want a quiet break. There was also a lot of nice touches, a bottle of wine, a cake and all the cleaning materials needed to mention but a few.

A most enjoyable week with sunshine more than rain. Lovely walks from the door, Dow Crag, in particular, gives wonderful views. Undercragg cottage is one of the best we have ever stayed in; warm, comfortable, beautifully furnished and well-appointed. All the little homely touches were greatly appreciated.

Undercragg is a lovely property in a beautiful location. It is spotlessly clean and tidy, very well equipped, warm and comfortable. The Christmas decorations were also very pretty and festive! Despite the weather we had wonderful high and low level walks from the door and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the quiet and stunning Duddon Valley; the cottage is an excellent starting point. We travelled from Dartmoor and had a wonderful holiday. I would highly recommend this accommodation and would love to return.

The cottage was everything we could have wished for and well equipped. We really didn't need to take anything! Totally secluded and peaceful, in stunning surroundings. There was a pleasant country pub less than a mile away and loads of great local walks for the dogs. The garden was large and securely fenced and there was ample parking for a few cars. We will definitely be back!

Loved everything. It was fantastic, the cottage, the location, the peace and quiet, the pub down the road after a hard days walking, the dog friendly nature of the cottage. The welcome pack of the cake, wine, milk, tea bags, everything that you could want was there. The garden was perfect for the dogs, enclosed, large and did not have to worry about them as it was totally secure, will definitely return.

Not having been to this particular cottage before it was fantastic to find such a glorious and remote spot. It has gone onto our definitely visit again places. The cottage is clean, comfy and warm with everything we needed. Walks from the door and away from it all. All the owner's extra touches made it homely and welcoming.

With a number of good walks on the doorstep this cottage is an ideal retreat for those that want to walk, and for those that do not walk. The garden is quiet and secure. The pub is 800 yards down the road.

August 2012
We had a wonderful time and the cottage and the location was just stunning. The cleanliness of the cottage was a huge bonus. We are not used to driving on the tiny roads of England any more, but felt getting to the cottage was well worth the drive. We loved the seclusion of the cottage, after visiting lots of friends and relatives, the peace was heaven. The welcoming gift of wine and cake was a lovely surprise and the helpfulness of the owners when we needed them was great. Thank you so much!

The cottage felt immediately comfortable. We loved the location, the views were fantastic and the immediate surroundings of the house were great for the kids to run around. The isolation of the place was just what we wanted!

We have just returned from a relaxing weekend at Undercragg. We wanted peace and quiet and we certainly got it. The surrounding views are stunning. The cottage was warm and comfortable with everything you could possibly need. The wine and cake was much appreciated. Our only negative would be the number of bruises on our heads from the low beams...totally our fault for not looking where we were going! We would love to go back next year

This was just an ideal cottage for us. It is situated well up the Duddon Valley, which is quite unspoilt, and like stepping back in time to the Lake District as it was 50 years ago; glorious countryside and walks from the door. The cottage is beautifully appointed, warm, and quiet : it is reached by a short tarmacked drive off the lane, and looks out to the hills over a field that when we were there was full of Herdwick lambs. There is nothing else nearby apart from a couple of barns, so it feels very secluded. Down the road, only 5 or 10 minutes walk, is the Newfield Inn where we enjoyed a couple of really good pub meals. Yes, some of the beams are low and I cracked my head a few times, but it was worth it!

We struggle to think of anything that was not already available at this beautiful cottage. The walks were superb from the doorstep onwards and the walled garden allowed for our Springer to have a spot of freedom whilst we indulged in our afternoon tea!

Lovely peaceful cottage, with only a handful of sheep for neighbours. You are a bit cut off, as there is no mobile reception for about 8 miles around and the area is very out of the way, but there are good walks from the door, so if you want peace and quiet and don't want to do much then this is the place to go. The heating is economy 7, so can be chilly in the depths of winter and the hot water isn't abundant, but the cottage is well equipped, with a great supply of logs and coal on arrival, and a bottle of wine and home-made cake to welcome you. The pub is a five minute walk, there's a tiny post office at Ulpha, a grocer, butcher and outdoor shop 10 miles away in Broughton, anything else is further afield.

Location is everything if you like rural setting middle of know where and no phone reception or wifi for miles come to undercragg. Plus amazing walks from the cottage, huge garden, detached property ,very dog friendly. If you tall, please be aware low ceilings and beams upstairs and down at 5'5 i am short and cracked my head on the beam at the top of landing, but the house is 400 years old after all. On both visits a lovely homemade victoria sponge cake greeted us as well as a bottle of wine, shame it was Rose last time. This property is 400 years old so accept it maybe a wee bit cold perhaps rustic, etc in January. There is a spooky wooden cupboard in the living room above the door the wood carvings date from early 1700s. This was our second time staying, the place is so well looked after, whoever cleans and cares for place keeps it so well stocked, and very clean, you name it they have it, dog bowls, candles, wood, a coal shed, with a trust box, free coal and wood as a starter pack. Telly is ancient, however there are books, maps, board games, and all sorts of things to do in the cottage apart from the news in the evening we never really had the TV on. Amazing enclosed garden, location is superb, its so private apart from the occasioal farmer turning up to check on his cattle in the fields adjacent. The place has real historical importance to the area and the village of Seathwaite as its the birth place of the Reverent Robert Walker "wonderful walker" as knick named by the poet William Wordsworth. Must sees are the Newfield Inn with some rare stone floor only found in Seathwaite area, its also walking/staggering distance to the cottage, and also the church which has a very old tree in the grave yard which predates the church. Carry on past the cottage and you see some of most amazing scenery every in the duddon valley, the road follows the duddon river to cockley beck, avoid the hardknott pass into eskdale, it was one of the scariest roads I have ever seen, tight narrow and very steep. We had a lovely walk from Cockley Beck up some mountains we got some amazing views of Scafell. Down the road is the small village of Ulpha amazing woodland walks and the nearest 'tiny' shop, from Ulpha you can drive over the Berker Fell down to Eskdale Green and Eskdale Valley, or leave the car at the cottage and go for a hike up to Seathwaite Tarn. We also feel the price for a week in winter was very good value.

This is a lovely cottage ideal for those who want away from it all. Its a really homely cottage with lots of finishing touches, very clean and well equipped, comfortable beds but watch your head as it has very low beams and ceilings. Owner very friendly and gave good instructions, location very much in the mountains so no mobile signal. The road leading up to the cottage is reasonably good with passing places. There are walks from the door and the owner has supplied maps and books that tell you about the area which we found very helpful in planning the day trips. Definitely one that we will return to.
