Crooked Cottage Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
This Grade II listed stone-built end-terrace cottage is located on the edge of the market town of Kirkbymoorside. Set over three floors, this lovely property has been carefully refurbished to provide comfortable, well-equipped accommodation. Built in the mid 1700s, the building itself boasts masses of character and charm. The ground floor is composed of a spacious farmhouse style kitchen with fireplace and window seat, whilst the comfortable sitting room, complete with exposed beams and an open fire, is located on the second floor. Outside, guests can enjoy a small but pretty cottage garden, ideal for an evening drink outside.

Situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, the attractive market town of Kirkbymoorside is located between the towns of Helmsley and Pickering. Full of traditional Yorkshire character, this little town is the centre for the local farms and villages. There are numerous tea-rooms, pubs, restaurants and antique shops within the village, through for some truly local flavour visitors can enjoy the market which takes place every Wednesday. The surrounding scenery is spectacular and offers excellent walking and cycling opportunities, including those within the National Park. Close by are the picturesque villages of Hutton le Hole and Lastingham, the North York Moors Steam Railway, the City of York and the Yorkshire Coast – all within easy driving distance.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Gas central heating from gas fire in the kitchen (back boiler) with open fire in sitting room. Gas cooker, microwave, fridge with ice box, washing machine, TV, DVD, radio/CD. Fuel, power & starter pack for open fire inc. in rent. Bed linen & towels inc. in rent. Outside lockable cycle store for boots/bikes. Roadside parking at front of property. I loved the quirky nature of the layout of the cottage, and the living room space on the top floor was superb. A very cosy feel, light and airy; I could not have asked for more. The location of the cottage was excellent, set in a lovely little market town, and there were lots of very interesting places to visit within very easy reach of the property.

December 2012
A most comfortable cottage. We enjoyed everything that Crooked Cottage had to offer. Their in-house brochure advised of walks in the area and also restaurants in the village, all proved to be excellent. We would certainly recommend this cottage and Sykes cottages for the way we received all the necessary information well in advance, prior to us leaving our own home. Thank you!

September 2011
Everything was good - the cottage and the area, ideal for visits to such places as the Yorkshire Moors and the railway. In addition it was ideal for Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay and of course the Yorkshire Moors railway and Goathland, home of the TV programme 'Heart Beat'. It was the first time that we had visited the area and we will certainly come again.
Mr Lewis

The location of the cottage was excellent and the building itself was quirky and characterful. It was warm, cosy and comfortable and had more or less everything you might need on holiday. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We definitely plan to stay there again.

April 2011
I thought that the cottage was situated in a perfect area to reach other tourist places like Whitby, Scarborough etc. The cottage was well equipped for everything that we needed, especially as we brought our 11 month old daughter with us. The use of the travel cot and highchair was great. Also we found the property to be very very clean.
Mr Birch

Quirky cottage - we loved it - also met the owners as we had a key problem (quickly resolved) and they were really nice. Description was spot on and overall really pleased.
Mr Greed
August 2010
The cottage was all that we needed as we were out most of the time. The facilities at the cottage were good with a comfortable bed. We found the Yorkshire people we met in the shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants most friendly and helpful.

We arrived at this cottage on a dismal day so perhaps that clouded our judgement - we found the kitchen area quite dark. The stairs are very twisty and narrow - I have reread the description on Sykes Cottage and I can't see where it mentions these stairs. We were unable to read in bed as there was only one bedside light which didn't work and the overhead light was very dim. We also found Kirkbymoorside very quiet - the 1 pub there was there has recently shut. The outside seating area which was described as a small garden was very small and looked onto the back of other houses - complete with dustbins. The lounge was a good size at the top of the house. Also, the duvet cover hadn't been ironed - a small problem to some but I think it gives a bad overall impression.
Mrs Oliver

Lovely quaint cottage in a good location.
Mr Humphrey
July 2010
Very nice, cosy, cottage atmosphere, clean, one felt at home. All amenities are close by in the town centre. All tourist aspects are easily reached. Although the cottage is on the road we had no problem sleeping, it was generally quiet.

Nature of the town - a very pleasant place to holiday in; friendly local people (great pork pies!). Great part of the country - Yorkshire Moors with many beautiful villages on doorstep; excellent for walks and many places of interest. Very relaxing; perhaps not suit someone wanting a raucous holiday. Owners very helpful.

Very clean, good location. Very close to Castle Howard, Flamingo Park, York City and Whitby. Take a trip on the steam train from Pickering visiting locations en-route, Goathland (Heartbeat filmed here) Car lovers will love to go to Thornton-le-Dale to see the old cars.
July 2010
Being with my wife for a whole week without children asking me to fix their plumbing or dig their gardens. I can't believe how long the days are this far North!
Mr Mrs Wilshire
February 2010
Ideally situated, a real home from home, and met our high standards. Had a fabulous relaxing holiday and was sorry to leave the cottage but will miss the open fire the most.

August 2010
The facilities in the village were excellent so if wanted to stay put and not go anywhere for a week you could, but it was also so central and within driving or public transport distance to everywhere.
March 2015
Stayed here in mid-March '15 and really enjoyed it. The location is really good, the town has all the basic shops you need and a couple of really nice and friendly pubs, one dog-friendly. It's well-placed for reaching the coast quickly - under an hour - and also lovely scenery all around. The cottage itself has a lovely large, simply and tastefully furnished lounge with wood-burning stove where you can really relax, likewise the bedroom is nicely done and bed comfy, the kitchen and ground floor has plenty of space, bathroom's fine. Lots of stairs to help you burn off the calories, guest book noted a couple of people had come down the wrong way after one drink too many. The cottage goes back to 18thC, nice history, lots of maps and info supplied, lots of good reviews. We would definitely come back to this lovely scenic and friendly area.
August 2011
This is a great place to stay. It is a lovely, quaint cottage with everything you need - whatever the weather. We spent a week here in June and couldnt have asked for more. The cottage itself is well equipped and cosy but light and airy too. The location is brilliant - perfect for driving around the moors but also for walking into the village for a drink/meal in the evening too. It has everything you need for a great holiday.
October 2011
This is in a great location and was easy to find. It is well looked after and very quirky with the lounge on the top floor and the kitchen on the ground floor. Well equipped with everything you need for self catering. Good food locally within walking distance and plenty of interesting places to eat & visit within a few miles. Negatives - Don't bring too many clothes as very little storage and unfortunately the bed is showing it's age also on our visit we couldn't get the DVD player to work. Positives - very handy location & cottage generally well fitted out.
December 2009
The cottage was easy to find, inside it was warm and welcoming with lots of original features. It was warm and cosy with the central heating and the open fire upstairs in the lounge was great on a night. The village centre was 2 minutes walk away with all the shops, bakers, butchers and pubs you could need. We recommend a visit to the indian restaurant, good food at reasonable prices. The walking around the village is great and we ventured out most days, great start is to walk down by the golf course. Brilliant holiday cottage which we will visit again next year!

September 2013
We spent a fabulous week in North Yorkshire using Crooked Cottage as our base. It is a great little cottage, very comfortable with everything we needed. The odd layout of the cottage with the living room right at the top made a real nice change but you do need to be happy climbing lots of stairs! The location of cottage was great. Plenty of walking for the dog on the doorstep but also Kirkbymoorside which had everything we needed only a 5 minute walk away. The Indian takeaway is highly recommended. The George & Dragon, Kings Head and White Swan all great pubs in their different ways. The Black Swan would be enjoyed by anyone wanting Sky sports and loud music. Overall, a great place to stay.
July 2010
It was lovely, really good location in a well served small market town. Nice place containing all the things you need.
September 2010
Central location on the edge of Kirkbymoorside. Peace and tranquillity. Ideal for anyone who doesn't object climbing to the second floor lounge.
April 2010
What a lovely cosy cottage which protected us from the outside elements including snow ! Highly recommended as a real "home from home" with many thoughtful touches being provided by the owners. The log fire ensured we didin't venture very far in the evenings not that we wanted to after exploring the lovely countryside. Great walks from the frontdoor, without having to drive anywhere was also a blessing in the snow. Town (Village really) had everything you needed and locals were very welcoming. I would highly recommend this cottage and we will be returning in the future.
