The cottage is set in a quiet position in the village next to the Pennine Way long distance footpath and the Woodland Trust wood around the corner and many more excellent walks direct from the cottage. The pub is a short distance away and is dog friendly and serves good ales and food. The cottage has every thing that I needed for a successful holiday and I liked the patio seating area. The owners are friendly and made me welcome with a nice cake and a bottle of milk, tea and coffee to settle me in. I am looking forward to going back again to Dufton.

We stayed at Dufton Hall Cottage with our dog this weekend. On arrival the owners were very helpful and genuine; little personal touches such as fresh milk in the fridge, some fruit and a freshly baked cake were fantastic. Initial first impressions were good and after a closer look it was found that the kitchenette has numerous ancillaries, incl microwave, toaster, grill over, 2 electric hobs and the kettle. Very well presented and kept; the cottage was very homely. We both didn't want to leave. Local amenities incl the pub were great, and there were several nice walks for us and the pup. Overall, a cracking little cottage in a nice area.

We has a fantastic holiday in Dufton Hall Cottage, and though the property was small, it was everything that we could have hoped for and more. The cottage was immaculate and contained everything we needed, the garden was enclosed so perfect for the dog, we enjoyed using the BBQ area of an evening and the local pub served lovely home cooked food. We particularly enjoyed walking the Pennine Way, which started just next to the cottage, and took us on a 6 miles scenic walk through the surrounding countryside of Dufton and Appleby. We also spent a day at Windemere where we cruised across the lake to Ambleside and walked to the stunning waterfalls on the out-skirts of the village. The best UK holiday we have ever had!

An excellent quiet base to explore the beautiful Lake District, Cumbria and Northumbria without the hoards of tourists to be found in Keswick etc. The owners of Dufton Hall Cottage are very friendly and the local pub serves wonderful food. Lots of walks to be found starting from Dufton village. Highly recommended for a couple who don't mind a studio type apartment.

We visited during Christmas period and had a positive experience. Hopefully the below should help you make an educated decision as I wasn't sure what to expect after reading some of the reviews. Pros: 1. Good communication before arrival. 3. Warm welcome. 4. Variety of food basis supplied; milk, tea, sugar, bananas, cooking oil through to foil. 5. Range of cooking appliances; kettle, toaster, slow cooker, hob, steamer, small fridge. Various pots, pans and utensils. Also decent bows, plates, cups and glasses. 6. Offer to use main house oven etc to help cook Christmas dinner. 7. Went extra mile and festively decorated. 8. Plenty of storage cupboards etc. 9. Fantastic shower and thick towels provided. Soap and shampoo provided in wall dispenses - smells lovely. 10. Bed really warm and comfy but rolled into middle (see con 2). 11. Plenty of activity and walk information provided in pack in cupboard. 12. TV & DVD player with remotes (although had to give dvd good clean to get it playing properly). Will need to take own films. 13. Various cleaning products available so can keep as clean as you wish. Cons: 1. No wifi. 2. Bed is two singles put/zipped together, you tend to roll into middle but was warm and comfy (see pro 9). Other: 1. You truly are in the middle of nowhere so no signal however bit of a hotspot at the front gate where you may get a bar or two of signal. Suggestions: 1. Need door glass to be frosted or tinted to allow privacy without closing blind. 2. Radiator too small to heat room properly, larger one needed or better insulation. Perhaps curtain across door to help retain heat. It drops rather chilly. 3. Need to be clearer as to where bin/recycle unit is.
May 2016
Cons: Small, much smaller than we envisaged. As it's all open plan (except for bathroom) it felt far too cramped for a couple with large dog (dog bed) and walking gear. Felt quite enclosed when we had inclement weather. For some reason there is only one stool for the breakfast bar so a couple could not sit and eat together. Not very private with people walking past the part glass door of the accommodation to the main house (yes, we could pull the blind down but then it really did feel claustrophobic) Pros: Fantastic location, modern and spotless accommodation. Good TV reception. equipped with small wardrobe, bedside cabinets and little items like reading books, playing cards, walking routes, shower gels, free wi-fi. Nice sitting area (when the weather is favourable). To be fair the owners have done a great conversion job and the accommodation may suit some folk but i'm sorry to say it just wasn't for us.
July 2015
Perfect for a long weekend for just me and my dog, this cottage is very small but well designed and very well equipped. Lovely comfy bed and nice enclosed garden to sit out weather permitting, which it was during my stay. Dufton is a really pretty and incredibly peaceful village with a good pub serving food and a tea shop (The post box pantry) which does a great cooked breakfast. Could do with instructions on how to use the hob as it took me ages to work it out as I am only familiar with gas hobs.

On arrival, we were greeted by the owner who made us feel very welcome with some home baked mince pies! The cottage is a small studio, traditional on the outside, but very modern on the inside. The bathroom is excellent and the large king size bed makes for a great nights sleep. Staying over during the winter months means you don't use the outside space, which makes this place very small but very cosy. And with a dog along for the walks, left the space very limited. What lets this place down is the small fridge, with just enough space for breakfast and with no shops nearby, meant all food and booze were stored in the car, in the summer this wouldn't work. The local Stag Inn is excellent and the walking in the nearby hills is fantastic. Would definetly recommend this place, just plan your stay carefully.
August 2014
Excellent location for walking, the Pennine Way route is just outside the garden, with many other walks including a Woodland Trust site in the valley close by. The owners are friendly and even left me an excellent cake and some food essentials to get me started. Lovely clean accommodation with everything I need for a holiday including a paved seating area in the garden. Friendly village with pub a few minutes walk away which welcomes dogs. Had a lovely time exploring the area with my dog and look forward to going back there.
November 2014
We recently stayed a weekend at this cottage And would recommend it to any couple wanting a quiet peaceful retreat! Yes it's small and this is stated in the descriptions but was lovely and cosy.we had a meal at the local pub the the stag the staff were lovely and the food was lovely too we visted Appleby whilst staying and had a fab full English in a cafe think it was called the Eden again lovely and friendly and the food was delicious. We arrived later than planned on the Friday there was no problem we were left with tea coffee milk and delicious homemade chocolate cake..thank u for a lovely weekend it's just what we needed
November 2012
Dufton Hall cottage family were very welcoming even down to dog to dog playing with each other toys. The cottage is suitable for a couple and their four legged family. The village and surrounding areas had good walks and well sign posted. The locals are very friend and very helpful. I would recommend going to Dufton
August 2013
Great location for the Pennine Way walk and superb views all around the village Friendly, helpful owners Wonderful, huge, comfortable bed to collapse on after a long day walking, and an excellent shower room However, we found it very cramped with all our luggage as this was week two of a two centre walking holiday. We should have noted that in the description it was described as studio accommodation. Great that the owners made dogs welcome though.
March 2011
The cottage was warm but very small, especially for 2 people and a german shepherd. We left before the week was up as there was no room to store clothes for the week and we had to leave them packed in cases which took up most of the floor space. The owners were friendly enough when we met them in the pub.
September 2011
We stayed at Dufton Hall Cottage for 3 nights in July. It was a last minute booking. Owners gave good directions, easy to find. Nice distance from appleby. We used the cottage as a base to explore the lake district which took us around an hour to get to. Local pub, although food expensive and not very good. Food outlets in appleby such as Fish and Chips and Chinese, all very good and a fully stocked Co-op. The cottage was very compact but well fitted out. The kingsize bed was lovely! We took our two small dogs with us, at the owners discretion and it was cosey. Warmed up well when radiators were switched on. Garden is shared with the owner. Would recommend to family and friends. A good base but if your wanting to spend alot of time in your cottage, its a little small.
January 2013
I stayed for a week in Nov,an alone walking break, I think the cottage is really for the other three seasons,as it was nippy at night, even with the heat left on,the draught comming from around the front door and the tiled floor was ice cold. The bathroom was great and the kitchen was also fine. Just the place was not warm, for one!
