Fairholme Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
Fairholme is an attractive, stone-built, end-terrace cottage, centrally situated in the popular village of Hinderwell, seven miles north of Whitby. With three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin, all with en-suites, it sleeps six comfortably. There is also a modern, fitted kitchen with a Belfast sink, dining room and a sitting room with an open fire to curl up in front of after a busy day. Outside there is a small front garden and off road parking for two cars, making Fairholme a great base for a lovely holiday.

Hinderwell is a small, lively village close to the fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay. Hinderwell was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hildrewell, a derivation of Hilda's Well, named for the Abbess of Whitby who was travelling through the parish in a drought and was asked to intercede. Her prayers were answered when a spring appeared near the sight of the present Parish Church, and this spring has continued to flow from the hillside to this day. The village is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful countryside, and walks, cycle ways, gliding, horse riding and fishing are all well catered for in the area. Whitby is seven miles away and the town has a rich and varied heritage waiting to be discovered. This is a fabulous holiday base.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

Oil central heating with open fire in sitting room. Electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, TV with Freeview, DVD, radio/CD player, WiFi, selection of DVDs. Fuel power and starter pack for open fire inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair available. Off road parking for 2 cars. Small lawned front garden with furniture and BBQ. One well-behaved dog welcome. Sorry, no smoking. Shop and pub 2 mins walk. Beach 1 mile.

February 2015
This was our second stay here which says it all! Very well-equipped cottage, especially the kitchen - we prefer to cook most of our meals rather than eat out and in a lot of cottages this is tricky, but not at Fairholme, you have everything you need. Location - we were there for fossil hunting and it is conveniently located between Port Mulgrave/Runswick Bay/Kettleness.

Our third stay in 12 months. 'Says enough, I think!

A well equipped cottage, the bedrooms having their own en-suite bathrooms is a real plus point. The cottage is well positioned between two pubs in the village, both welcome dogs and have good selections of meals. We stayed over the New Year and were warm enough with the central heating and solid fuel fire.
Mrs Edwards

The cottage was perfect for the group of family and friends; particularly all of the bedrooms being en-suite and the large separate dining room. Lovely big kitchen with plenty of room for everyone to help with dinner preparation! The location was perfect for walking from the cottage without the need to use the car. Beautiful Runswick Bay in one direction and stunning cliff top walks in the other direction. Gorgeous! The two neighbouring pubs were great. Fantastic food at the Badger Hounds, well worth a visit!
Mrs Shepherd
March 2014
The cottage was lovely. Everything had been thought of and we were welcomed not only with milk and coffee but also fresh flowers and lovely biscuits. The Brown Cow pub next door but one delivered a genuine warm, friendly welcome at all times along with guest ales and hearty food. Three generations of my family went and we all had a great time. I think the cottage was extremely good value for money.

The rooms were even better, more room and more comfortable than they looked in the photos on the website. We loved the village and enormously enjoyed exploring the immediate area and further afield.

Tremendous property, in terms of location, the general standard, cleanliness, extras including clingfilm, tomato sauce, salt pepper - all the things you so often have to buy in self catering places. Highly recommended!

Cottage had everything we needed for the break and it was super that all the bedrooms were en-suite. Much appreciated the welcome pack. More provided than indicated in the information - towels, tablets for the dishwasher and toilet rolls to name just a few.

Having stayed for a week, unfortunately, the cons outweighed the pros. Pros: Good location for visiting the surrounding areas. Plenty of utensils etc, Off road parking. Pet friendly. All bedrooms have en-suite facilities, although one is very small and tight to enter. Welcome flowers and cookies from owners. Cons: The whole house is in need of a thorough cleaning/decorating. The kitchen in particular needs steam cleaning. Most of the carpets need replacing. The small front area cannot be secured from the busy road, therefore children & pets cannot be left unsupervised. The road is busy, a bus route, lots of traffic noise starting early in the morning. Temporary traffic lights, due to roadworks outside, therefore, creating stationary traffic infront of the cottage. Immediately behind the property, looks like a mini scrap yard. Lounge is small and odd shape with well worn sofas. Parking for more than one medium sized car is very tight. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this property.
April 2015
Stayed for the New Year with friends and our dog. Great location easy walking distance to several beaches and shops. Both pubs in village have good food and welcome dogs. The property was well equipped and warm enough over the cold Christmas period. The solid fuel fire was a nice addition for extra heating. Accommodates six easily with en-suite rooms and there's a bed in the lounge along with downstairs bathroom if anyone can't manage the stairs. Car parking is limited to two in front of the property, but we did get three on. The property doesn't have an enclosed garden so young children and dogs need supervision. We didn't have a problem with this so we'd certainly consider it again.
November 2014
The cottage is on a surprisingly busy road through Hinderwell, but ideally placed. You can easily walk to Runswick Bay and pick up the coast path - a great walk along there to Staithes. There is a lovely fish and chip shop directly opposite, and the village has two pubs, although one is up for sale. We ate at the Fox and Hounds just outside Staithes one night, and the Ellerby Country Inn the other. The accommodation is very comfortable with en suites for each bedroom. Realistically it only sleeps 6 - there are only 3 bedrooms. The lounge is tiny and an odd shape, but it suffices. The kitchen is very nice and well equipped, although some non-stick pans are showing their age! Parking was a bit of an issue - there is a paved area for one car by the front door, a second has to park on the grass on the front garden, which is the only outside space. Otherwise use the road - the driveway belongs to another property and we were asked to move. It has wifi, but we didn't realise as our blurb didn't mention it. The TV is pretty small. The stairs are very steep! The cottage is lovely and warm, so good for a winter break.

This is a really good holiday cottage from which to travel coast north and south. Had some great days out. Good size accommodation, clean, well decorated with great beds and full dining/cooking facilities. No wi -fi but download BT app and log on using local hot spots. Good value for money as sleeps 8. However very limited parking. Small front garden has no gate so not able to leave young children, dogs unsupervised. No seats to sit out. Had to park a car on same lawned area. Only one window opens on entire ground floor so very hot in kitchen unless you open one of 2 main doors which means passers by have view into room/house. We had a dog and infirm family member so this was an important consideration. Would still recommend.

December 2013
I stayed here with family and friends during Christmas week. It was our first Christmas away from home and it was just perfect. The cottage itself was gorgeous and the layout and space was perfect for the size of our group (6...and then 8 for the last 2 nights). Being so close to Runswick Bay and some gorgeous cliff top walks in the other direction meant we could leave the car at the cottage and just walk. Even managed a bracing stroll before Christmas lunch! Boxing Day gave a trip into Whitby. A simply lovely Christmas break in a perfect location (not to mention the 2 neighbouring pubs...particularly dinner at the badger hounds!). Well worth a visit. Amazing value. Book it now!

The house was even better than the photographs indicated on the website. The kitchen was very well equipped. Each of the three bedrooms has its own en suite shower-room. The house is well furnished. Our only quibble was that the downstairs toilet - in the utility room - was leaking, and although we contacted the owner, no-one came to sort this out. Having said that, our rental was over the Christmas period, and with three other toilets in the house, it was not a major problem. We loved the area, and the house is in walking distance of Staithes. We had some wonderful walks on the coastal path and in the North York Moors.
December 2012
Previously we had always stayed south of Whitby, so choosing to stay in Hinderwell was something new,It lead us to discover Sandsend- a great beach that all the family enjoyed. From the moment we entered Fairholme we felt welcomed by this lovely very well presented holiday cottage. we thoroughly enjoyed our time and the large dinning table made family eating a happy time. The only downside was the uncomfortable bed settee! We would definately recommend this house to our friends.
July 2012
We stayed here for a week in July 2012 there were 4 adults, 2 children and a dog. The house had a kitchen/diner, dining room, living room (with open fire), laundry room and 3 bedrooms all with en-suites. The house was immaculately clean when we arrived. The house was decorated to a very high standard and had everything we could possibly wish for. There is a small front garden that overlooks the main road and unfortunately no rear private garden for bbq's. In the village there are a couple of pubs and newsagent and a hairdresser. Runswick Bay is within walking distance which is a lovely little beach village. The house is very good value and I would reccomend it for access to Whitby and the Yorkshire Moors.
June 2013
Well equipped cottage, friendly owners, good location with easy and lovely walk to the coast from which you can walk north or south along the coastal path. You can also catch the bus in the village to do a one way walk.

July 2013
Perfect for a week away with friends. The cottage was very well equipped with all of the kitchen essentials you could need. It was very good value for money being such a big house and sleeping so many. Only slight drawbacks were the lack of a private garden (had to BBQ in the front garden with cars/people passing by constantly) and the creaky stairs above the bed in the sitting room, which are impossible to use quietly! Would definitely recommend or return if I was going back to the area!
January 2013
Just came back yesterday (unfortunately - need to be back for work - my inlaws are still there). This property is really well situated, so you don't have to spend much time in the car. Runswick and Staithes are walkable and Whitby is a 10 minute drive away. There are 2 pubs in the village (we did 'quiz night at one and they were very friendly, bringing roast chestnuts over for us). There's a butchers and a local shop too, and Staithes ahs a co-op, so you don't need to take the kitchen sink with you as we did. The house was very clean indeed, comfortable and well equipped. They have all those things that you normally have to buy when self catering - salt and pepper / cling film / tomato sauce - as well as good quality pans and roasting dishes. We were all really impressed and we had a lovely stay. Can't recommend it enough really - the beds and quilts were very nice too - will likely look to return!
December 2012
This is a beautiful property which is full of character and tastefully decorated. There was a thoughtful welcome pack and flowers on arrival and the owner called us the morning after arrival. The information pack was most helpful. The whole house was fully equipped for all our needs and the open fire was great. Although it met our needs completely, the lack of private outside space may deter some visitors. There is an excellent butchers in the village. We would certainly stay there again if in this part of the country.
