Gateside Family Cottage description

Holiday home
Gateside is a former threshing barn which has been sympathetically converted to a high standard and is located in the Yorkshire village of Newton-upon-Rawcliffe near to Pickering. The property is an 'upside down' house and has three bedrooms (one double, one twin and one single) which with the addition of a family bathroom makes it suitable for five people. Also in the cottage, on the ground floor is a fitted kitchen with a dining area and a sitting room with a woodburning stove. Outside the cottage is a courtyard with furniture and off road parking for two cars 30 metres away. Gateside is a charming base to discover the wide variety of attractions on offer in this beautiful part of Britain.

The delightful, unspoiled village of Newton upon Rawcliffe is a picture-postcard village with stone cottages and farms clustered around the village green and duck pond, situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The area has varied countryside and offers fantastic walking opportunities. Nearby Pickering is only four miles away and this historic market town is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, England's longest steam railway. Near the centre of Pickering is Beck Isle Museum; a centre of bygone rural crafts and the customs of the local area. The magnificent abbeys of Byland and Rievaulx are close by as is the historic walled city of York and the stately home of Castle Howard. With its many activities and attractions, this is a fabulous area for a family holiday.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

The accommodation was excellent, and the village provided a good base for access to the rest of the area. The White Swan pub in the village was a joy, with good food and drink and wonderful friendly staff and locals.

Delightful cottage in a lovely setting, perfect for exploring the North York Moors.

May 2015
The cottage was well presented with all amenities. It was spotlessly cleaned, nice and warm, and a pleasure to stay at. The kitchen was a highlight. The upside down arrangement worked very well and we all liked it. We were in a group of five adults and it worked well for us. We would certainly use it again if staying in the area as it is ideally placed for exploring the north York moors area. It was also very quiet. We were not disturbed at all by noise as the village is very quiet and there is little, if any, through traffic.
Mr Tinsley

The house is upside down (living room upstairs) this meant we could see the lovely surrounding views. It is a very warm property and obviously well maintained. As well as being very central for the moors.

The village is very, very nice and peaceful, which is exactly what I expected after visiting the year before. There is lots to see and do in the local area making for a great place to stay for a holiday. Try the drive over the moors to the North Yorkshire Moors visitor centre! The local pub serves excellent food, the best pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord I've ever had and the staff are really nice and pleasant too. What more could you wish for?
Mr McCusker

Staying in a proper village with a village green, a pond and loads of tractors, is a million miles away from home. For us as a family there are lots of attractions in and around Pickering and our daughter (who's 3) really enjoyed the sea-side the Sea-Life Centre this year.

The cottage was very warm and cosy and welcoming, it was lovely to be able to light a fire. We all loved the underfoor heating in the bathroom. On our arrival there was a bottle of wine with a Christmas card which was a lovely touch. There were lots of games and activities to amuse the kids. It was a good location with plenty to do and see when the fog eventually lifted.
Ms Reay

We really enjoyed our stay at Gateside. It was a Christmas break away from home and we felt very welcomed by the house. It was very well presented and had a generous and wholly hospitable feel. Decorations had been put up, the heating was on and a basket of logs was ready for the fire should we need it. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

December 2004
What an excellent property - the location is ideal for North Yorkshire and the east coast. The Mucky Duck Pub - the food was very good, but you must try the pub in a village called Lastingham - The Blacksmith Arms, Food absolutely brilliant. The village of Newton upon Radcliff very quiet - nice tennis courts and park.
October 2016
A real home from home. Very comfortable cottage in a great location. Very quiet and peaceful but close to many fun, family friendly activities. We enjoyed Whitby, Helmsley, Pickering, Rievaulx, Flamingo Land and eating in The White Swan. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here.
April 2012
The accommodation had everything we needed, including very comfortable beds, the only slight downside being the rather dated bathroom. The couple who were looking after the cottage were friendly and helpful and the location was excellent with lots to do and see in the area. Pickering itself is the start of the North Yorks Moors light railway and the coastal towns of Scarborough and Filey are only an hour's drive away.
October 2011
Lovely and clean with everything you need to have as a base. Quiet location. Easy to get to all the places we wanted to visit, eg Whitby by steam train from Pickering, local museum in Pickering is worth a day's visit, local farmers' show was excellent. Base allowed us to relax on return from day out, plenty to do - well Yorkshire is God's own county!
October 2011
Gateside is very well equipped and comfortable. It benefits from a recently refitted kitchen which has been done to a very high standard. The 'upside down' accommodation was unusual but made the most of the views available. Great base for the moors with good links to Pickering and surrounding area.
