Holiday home
Gilchrist House is a quality four storey cottage by the river in Settle. The cottage has a room on the 2nd floor with beds which can be offered as a king-size double or twins and there is also a sofa bed. On the first floor is a double and a super king-size double (zip/link, can be twin on request), along with a bathroom and an additional basin and WC. Downstairs is a kitchen, dining room with open fire and a sitting room with open fire and on the lower ground floor is a games room with multi-use games table with pool and table tennis and dart board. There is also storage for bikes etc. in the cellar. Off road parking is available in a yard opposite the property, and there is a communal, front, riverside, grassed park with benches. Gilchrist House offers easy access to both the Dales and the Lakes national parks, making it a wonderful year-round base to explore the area. Note: There are 5 steep steps leading to one of the cottage entrances.

Situated in the south-west rim of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the bustling market town of Settle. Nestled beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes - this pretty little town is set against a backdrop of some of the most picturesque scenery in North Yorkshire. Every Tuesday, the town's market place is filled with stalls offering a wide variety of crafts and goods whilst throughout the rest of the week the local businesses surrounding the market place thrive. There is a good selection of restaurants and pubs and the town also boasts an excellent public swimming pool. Three days a week, the Victoria Hall is transformed into a cinema, providing visitors with all the activities of a larger town. The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway is also a huge draw and runs regular trips across some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

The owner has obviously put a lot of thought into the cottage. The internal decorations are in keeping with the period of the cottage. Cannot rate this cottage highly enough. It almost felt like you'd been invited to stay in someone's home rather than a holiday let. Fantastic.
Mr Walker

This property is in a lovely position with access to river and countryside walks, together with a good range of shops and restaurants within walking distance. The house has a lovely blend of period features together with all necessary modern amenities including WiFi. The games room was an added bonus, particularly for the youngsters.

The cottage was very well equipped, could not have asked for more. It was in a lovely part of Settle, everything was convenient and the views were awesome with the river being so close. Would highly recommend.

The cottage was excellent, everything that was needed was there and of an excellent quality. It was nice having all the Christmas decorations in place. I can't find fault with any of it.

August 2014
It was a lovely location by the river which was shallow and the children enjoyed wading at the edge. The village was typically Yorkshire and the market was small but interesting. We were close enough to visit Skipton and particularly enjoyed the canal boat ride and visiting Hesketh Park Farm.

The owner has tried to think of everything to make this property a home from home. The kitchen and bathroom are to a very high standard, and the coal fire in the living room was very well appreciated on a couple of cooler evenings.

Good location, walking distance to town but just outside busy area. House has been restored to an excellent standard, levels of furnishings very good - a real homely environment.

Gilchrist House is a beautiful property which has been furnished to a very high standard. The house is a very short walk from Settle centre, so on days you might not want to explore by car it's very easy to get on the train. Being on possibly the most beautiful train lines in the country, this is something to seriously consider doing. There are lots of board games to play as well as pool table and darts board in the cellar. I very much hope we will go back.

Gilchrist House is a beautiful warm and cosy home. The house is freshly decorated with some delightful finishing touches. The kitchen was well equipped with a large fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The pool table and dart board in the cellar was a real hit with the children and kept them entertained all week. Gilchrist House and Settle was a really great find and we will definitely be going back.

Excellent accommodation, spacious and comfortable with everything we needed. Great location for walks. Look forward to paying another visit. (Wifi signal was a bit weak at times but we managed)
November 2016
Excellent location, facilities and equipment for 7 of us who stayed. The basement games room was a bonus for my 9year old grandson. Local cafes , take a ways and swimming pool were all excellent. The location is ideal for the three peaks, settle to Carlisle railway ( though at moment due to land slip it is best to have a return ticket to Appleby) and local walks. Particularly good value for post half term.

Myself and my family really loved Gilchrist House. It has a real warm and cosy feel which is helped along by two open fires. The kitchen is well eqipped with large fridge freezer, dishwasher and washer machine. The pool table and dart board in the cellar was a real hit with the children and kept them entertained the whole week. Would definitely love to go back.
April 2014
My family (2 adults & 3 children 6 & under) stayed here for a week in the Easter holidays and it was just lovely. The house is stunning, incredibly comfortable and well equipped. We were lucky enough to have fantastic weather, but if you were stuck indoors or just wanted some quiet time there are many (many!) games, several dvds & books and also a pool table & dart board to keep you occupied! The house is in easy strolling distance from Settle centre which is a lovely town in itself but also the gateway by car or even better by train to some of the most beautiful parts of the country. Plenty to do for everyone. Such a lovely place to stay for our holiday, we would love to return.
October 2014
Went here for a week with friends. The cottage is dog friendly and there are lots of lovely dog walks nearby. It is just a short walk to Settle where there is a good choice of pubs and restaurants, some of which welcome dogs. The cottage has been very tastefully decorated and is extremely comfortable.

This cottage was really well equipped, warm and comfortable with a little touch of luxury. The children loved the games room. The owners where really friendly, nothing too much trouble. Settle is a lovely base for walking and seeing many of the local sites. There are a variety of places to eat and drink, catering for all tastes.
June 2016
My sister rented this cottage on line for the family. She, my brother, and myself were travelling to Settle to return my father's ashes to the family plot. We took the cottage for a week so we could use it as a base to visit relatives. It was Amazing! Very well appointed with all the mod cons, and immaculate. Very comfortable and the view from the front to the River Ribble is beautiful. There is even a games room in the basement! The parking is a bit tricky to find since it is across the lane from the back gate of the cottage and accessed from the main road, but otherwise this was an almost perfect choice for us. Even more so when my Aunt Dorothy found an old class photograph from Giggleswick School dated 1959. In it she found her late husband, Peter and his younger brother Rodney sitting front and centre! Wow.
