Hen Aelwyd Yr Urdd is small but perfect for a quiet, romantic getaway for a couple. It's clean, fresh and neat, attractively and comfortably furnished and decorated (including a non-creaky bed, contrary to the experiences of a former guest!), and it's well equipped not only with a good range of utensils and appliances to make fending for yourself trouble free but also with lots of thoughtful little touches that make you feel very welcome. We found it lovely and warm even through the gales we had while there; the radiators were good but you didn't need them on once you got the very efficient multi-fuel stove going - toasty! It's easy to use and Angie and Rich supply a start-up supply of fuel enough to last for a couple of evenings. There's a decent choice of novels, games and DVDs for evenings in, as well as guide books and a folder with the hosts' friendly, personal recommendations and advice for making the most of your holiday.
Llan Ffestiniog is a very pleasant village surrounded by glorious countryside with lovely walks, short and long, right from the door. It's also in easy reach by car or public transport of other beauty spots and places of interest. The wee village shop is good for basics, sells fuel suitable for the stove, and is open till seven most evenings but you'll probably need to bring in some supplies, though don't go mad with the frozen foodstuffs as there's only the icebox in the fridge to keep them in. One downside to the village is that there's not much in the way of nightlife but the locals, whom we found very friendly, are planning to re-open the village pub in the very near future, and Blaenau Ffestiniog has pubs and places to eat out and is just three miles up the road.
