Lavender Cottage description

Holiday home
This unusual cottage is spread over four floors and is tucked away in a quiet corner of Whitby. The property has been painstakingly restored with many of the original features retained, including beams and a fireplace. The spacious kitchen is situated in the basement and is very well equipped. With an elegant dining area, the welcoming sitting room has a feature fireplace with a cosy living flame fire. The bathroom is a delight with an original cast iron fireplace and a separate shower. Both bedrooms are tastefully decorated and offer a peaceful haven at the end of a busy day. The cottage is just a few minutes' walk from the town's amenities and the sandy beaches, making this property an ideal location for a holiday.

The fishing port of Whitby is well placed for exploring the stunning coastline of Yorkshire and the equally spectacular North York Moors. The town itself has winding streets and alleyways secreted away just begging to be explored, the Abbey and it's famous 199 steps is a prominent feature and are said to have been one of the inspirations of Bram Stoker's atmospheric dark tale of Dracula. The bustling harbour and the beautiful sandy beaches offer a safe haven for families. Robin Hood's Bay is only six miles away and well worth a visit, with it's winding lanes and quirky houses. Further inland, 20 miles away is the market town of Pickering, home of the North Yorkshire Steam Railway. This is a fabulous area for a holiday.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Very comfortable and value for money cottage. Great location. Been several times to Lavender Cottage and it feels like home from home.

Lavender Cottage is full of character and very homely as a result. It's right in the heart of Old Town Whitby, across the swing bridge, you're two minutes from the 199 steps and the walk to the Fossil beach. We most enjoyed walking through Whitby and then retreating to Lavender Cottage.
Mr Noon

Good location and property at a good standard of furnishing and cleanliness. Owner provided own phone number and mobile to arrange key collection but also said to call if any problems.

The location was great for restaurants bars and shops. Was quiet considering it was near the main road through Whitby town, as soon as we left the busy road into the courtyard you forgot the location in the town centre. Loved the cosiness of the rooms, would recommend and hope to return in the future. Thank you again.
Mr Sutton

The location could not have been better. It was very central but the location meant it was also quiet. The car parking facility was only a 2 minute walk away. We could not ask for a better place which made it feel like home from home. We will definitely be recommending this cottage to others.

April 2011
Overall we had a great holiday. Ideal situation of excellent accommodation. Lots of good quality places to eat and drink. Fabulous walks to suit all tastes and abilities. The weather was beautiful for our whole stay. Great Pub just a few doors down The Black Horse, the beer was superb. The Magpie Chippy, you've got to try this place if fish and chips are your thing, good idea to book as it a very popular place in the evenings. If you like walking, do the coast walk to Robin Hood's Bay, it's well worth the effort. A beautiful place and a couple of good pubs there too. Excellent bus service back to Whitby. Once again this was ideal accommodation to base one's holiday from. We will definitely be returning!
Mr Bray

April 2010
Lavender Cottage is beautiful! It was my first visit to the North East and I couldn't have asked for more. I loved Whitby and also Grosmont; it was like stepping back in time and was magical! An excellent holiday, thank you!
September 2015
We noticed that the cottage is in need of some repair to the floor from where the sofa is situated to around the fireplace in the sitting room as it dips down very badly to the point of you constantly slipping off the sofa! As the cottage was probably built in the 17th century it probably requires a lot of tlc! It was very quirky with little winding stairs, but that added to the charm. Very well equipped with very comfortable beds. We felt it hadn't had a proper clean for a while as some areas were very dusty, but sinks/bath/shower/loo were clean and that's the main thing. You couldn't ask for a better location. Clarks Yard was very quiet but once you walked out of it you were in a pretty cobbled street with lovely old shops and plenty of great pubs band plenty of fantastic eating places right on your doorstep! Btw, no sign of a ghost and the cottage had a nice feel to it.
March 2015
Lovely cottage in a lovely off street location well kitted out nice snug warm cottage beds very comfy if visitors book is to be believed comes with resident ghost the monk although we didn't experience anything and if he is about seems friendly. Close to steps up to abbey which if you can managed to get up there enjoys panoramic views well worth the money have been twice now and hope to go again soon if there is a downside its parking but that's whitby in general
May 2014
Just spent the last week here, cannot fault it. Amenities excellent, everything you would need. There are a few stairs and the cottage is split over several levels so if stairs are an issue this may not be the place for you, I would also say that if you had young children this may not suit. Otherwise for walking and sight seeing great. Would definitely come again.

stayed here easter, very nice cottage not for people unsteady on feet as floors very uneven and three flights of very steep steps.but I loved it just up my strret.
January 2011
Lovely cottage conveniently situated in the midst of Whitby yet very quiet. Very comfortable.
May 2011
Lavender cottage was perfect for us. right in the centre of Whitby close to shops, restaurants, and the beach but tucked away in a very quiet location. We were able to take our dog which made it even better. A lovely little cottage, very comfortable. Highly recommended but given the chance we would rather not tell anyone about it so we could keep the secret to ourselves!

It's hard to imagine a more wonderfully situated holiday cottage; literally seconds from the heart of Whitby's old town, but incredibly quiet to the point of making you feel as if you were miles away from anything. It suited my wife and I and we would not hesitate from visiting it again.
July 2010
Clean, comfortable and well equipped cottage. Great location in centre of town, close to all attractions and beach. Looking forward to next visit!
November 2010
Really lovely cottage - loved everything about it! Perfect location and very comfortable. Will definitely book again!
May 2010
The cottage was exceptionally clean and inviting on arrival. Being March the weather was chilly but the real flame gas fire soon had the sitting room cosy. The fridge was soon stocked and clothes unpacked and we ventured into the town. The location was superb, right in the nub of things and the car was not needed at all. It was parked in the handy pay and display not 100 yards away. The "Dracula Abbey" virtually over looks the cottage and the famous 199 steps to get you there were just up the quaint pedestrian street next to the cottage. Whitby is a superb fishing village with all you could wish for for a holiday or short stay. The cottage was superb, sypathetically furnished and very comfortable though not for people who find stairs a problem as the staircase is very steep and takes you to all four floors. It is very well equipped with all the best in labour saving devices(dish washer etc). The cottage has a 5 star fish and chip shop within 30 yards of the front door so you do not need to cook every night. We had a great time and will certainly book again.

November 2015
