Nether Barr Farmhouse description

Holiday home
Nether Barr Farmhouse is a cottage that adjoins the owners' 19th century farmhouse, located one mile from Newton Stewart, near to Galloway Forest Park in Southern Scotland. This cottage has one twin bedroom with an en-suite shower room, making it suitable for two people. This all ground floor cottage also contains an open plan living area with a kitchen, a dining and a living area. The outside of the cottage has off road parking for one car and a large garden with patio and garden furniture. Nether Barr Farmhouse is situated in a beautiful, peaceful area and provides a perfect holiday home.

Famous for its salmon and trout fishing, the market town of Newton Stewart is situated in a stunning location between the rolling countryside of the Machars and the Galloway Forest Park. Steeped in history, Scotland's first Christian Missionary landed at The Machars, founding the country's first church in Whithorn in AD 397. The Whithorn Dig Visitor's Centre is alsoclose by, displaying material unearthed through years of excavation projects. Nearby, visitors can enjoy miles of coastline combining a mixture of sandy beaches and rocky shores, both of which are home to a diverse variety of birds. Alternatively, a trip inland will lead to superb walking country in the Galloway Hills and Forest Park. The surrounding area also boasts wonderful sailing, riding and fishing facilities, in addition to a variety of golf courses.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

The cottage is beautiful, clean and comfortable with everything you could need. It was conveniently situated for all the surrounding attractions, of which there are plenty within a short drive, lots more if you are prepared to go a bit further. We enjoyed the lovely bird-friendly garden, spent hours watching them through the picture window - delightful! The nightly flypast of the crows returning to roost and then the bats coming out to feed was an amazing spectacle! We also loved the red deer, the wild goats and the red kites - well worth a visit if you like wildlife. The local people were very friendly and helpful wherever we went, it was a total delight from start to finish.
Mrs Goldby
May 2014
This was one of the best holidays we have ever had despite the weather being poor, mainly due to the comfortable cottage with outstanding views. It is a haven of peace. The mile walk along a footpath to Newton Stewart is easy and safe for dogs. Newton Stewart offers everything one could need and boasts supermarkets, pubs and hotels for food. There are many places of interest which are easy to reach.
Mrs Hemsley

The surrounding area is beautiful, the cottage was warm and comfortable and perfectly situated. The view through the lounge window helped make the cottage peaceful and relaxing. It was a nice base to come back to after a days walking, relax with a meal and a drink and sit and watch the swallows finish their day. We would recommend this place and would love to visit again.
Mrs Greenwood
October 2014
Loved the picture window to the garden, which is a haven for little birds, absolutely delightful. Lovely warm well-equipped cottage, well situated for all amenities, in stunning countryside. Lots to see and do in a splendid area, close to local town with everything you could need. We've already booked for next year.

Nether Barr Farmhouse is totally private and self contained in a most convenient location and is comfortable and cosy. Our old dog simply loves the safe garden which also has a tiny wood where she can explore. We will return for a third time next year.

Good area for anyone who enjoys the outdoors with plenty of walks from the door as well as coastal and forest locations to visit close by. Cycle path makes for an easy walk into Newton Stewart where there is a good choice of supermarkets and local shops. Picture window in property helps make it a very relaxing location whatever the weather with lovely views to river and beyond.

September 2011
The location was excellent. It gave a feeling of isolation and yet it was only a mile away from the town and it had a lovely traffic free path. It was within easy reach of some of the most beautiful walks and views. All the walks were easy to follow and well marked which meant for a worry free walk in the wilderness. The cottage was so comfortable and we would have been happy just to sit in front of the picture window and watch the ever changing scene. We were extremely happy with the warmth, space and comfort. We can't wait to go back and visit. That is why l would not recommend this property to our friends as it would probably be fully booked when we tried to go again, that would never do!
Mr Hollywood

This is a lovely place, very peaceful and all it promised.
August 2013
We would certainly stay here again. Comfortable and relaxing stay in a lovely setting and within easy reach of Newton Stewart. Footpath & cycle path takes you into the town safely. Great views from the property with plenty of wildlife to see. Garden suitable for larger dogs, one wall was a bit low for the more agile smaller dog to be allowed to run free, but this was not rally a problem as plenty to do in Bonnie Gallowa' so dogs and humans worn out!
August 2014
Perfect for a couple with a dog who want to get away from it for a week, yet be near a busy little town with plenty of facilities. Whatever the weather, it is warm and cosy.
October 2012

We had a wonderful stay. Ken,Eve & Bow
October 2012
This is the second time I've stayed here & would stay again. On a beautiful evening, the views are stunning & the silence relaxing. Perfect for me & the dog to just chill.
August 2012
Nether Barr was a very comfortable cottage in a good location for the area and for what we required. There was an easy path walk 1 mile to Newton Stewart and a 45 minute drive to Cairnryan to catch the ferry to Ireland. We really enjoyed the large window overlooking the adjoining farm and river with 2 very comfortable easy chairs taking advantage of the views. the ensuite bathroom was large and well appointed. The kitchen area is small but adequate. Overall we had a very pleasant stay.
May 2015
We had a delightful stay at Nether Barr Farmhouse with our collie, Leo. The owner was not in residence in the other part of the property and it felt as if we were in our own private world. The view from the large picture window is stunning: garden, fields, river and hills, not another dwelling in sight. We were lucky enough to have great weather, otherwise view would be more limited. The lounge only accomodates two chairs, no space for a sofa. The view makes up for this though and though compact the loungs/kitchen is pleasant and contains all you need. The bedroom is twin bedded and quite large. I think a king size or linked twin beds, creating a super king, if required, would be an improvement. The bathroom is a good size with bath and efficient and hot over bath shower. Accommodation was heated well. No wifi except in the towns. Garden was ideal for Leo, plenty of space and well enclosed. The one mile walkway/cycle path to Newton Stewart is a great advantage. Safe for dogs (but look out for one place where there is an open gate to the road) and a pretty walk, it will bring you out at Sainsburys and Aldi.
Miss Parnell
December 2004

November 2010
Lovely enclosed garden - ideal for dogs. The cottage certainly lives up to its 4 star rating (should be 5 star). Very clean and comfortable cottage and the views from the picture window were magnificent with the scenes changing constantly near the riverside. Overall, a very peaceful, cosy and very private setting. We will visit again.
November 2010
We had a great time, the cottage was lovely, all that we needed as a base for our golfing holiday. We will definately be going back.
John Stokoe
September 2011
A charming cottage ideal for two sharing. Wildlife abounds in the garden which naturally extends into open countryside. It makes for the most relaxing of times. Cottage amenities were all in order. We never saw anyone supervising the cottage either on our arrival or before we departed but information provided was quite comprehensive. Highly recommended but don't all go as we shall probably want a gap in next year's calendar for our own return!
August 2011
A very comfortable and well appointed cottage with stunning views from the picture window. The off road path into the town centre of Newton Stewart was an added bonus. We can't wait to return next year.
June 2010
A delightful cottage in a beautiful location. We enjoyed beautiful weather and thoroughly explored this corner of Scotland. We would be happy to return at any time.
October 2010
I do not normaly recomend any hol because we all look for different thing from our hols, this would be an exeption.
November 2010
the view's from Nether Barr Farmhouse are stunning and the garden beautiful from the fruit trees and when you look around the garden you find something new just around the corner a little seat to read a night you see bats flying all a diamond in the ruff...
