Oscar's Barn description

Oscar’s Barn and Foxglove Nook annexe offer self-catering accommodation worthy of a Visit England 4* Gold award and Customer Choice Award 2016. The barn is situated near to the remains of the historic roman fort and village of Piercebridge in County Durham, North East England, and lies within easy reach of a host of major tourist attractions including Kynren – an epic tale of England with a cast of over 1500 performers in Bishop Auckland, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, Croft Motor Racing Circuit, the Tees Barrage International White Water Course at Stockton and Riverside International Cricket Ground at Chester-le-Street.

The barn nestles on a hillside in the beautiful countryside of Raby Castle estate land (a visit to the Deer Park and Castle is a must), and offers far reaching views over open fields towards the Pennines in the west and the North York Moors in the east. Oscar’s is some 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of the historic Victorian market town of Darlington, with its Hippodrome theatre and multiplex cinema complex, together with many restaurants and bars. Numerous farm shops, tearooms, cafes, garden centres, ice cream parlours and country pubs including the renowned Raby Hunt Michelin star restaurant can be found in the surrounding countryside, and all within easy driving distance.

Perfect for walkers and cyclists, or guests just wanting to enjoy a quiet getaway or romantic break, Oscar’s is a first floor apartment with stunning views across open countryside from its grand floor-to-ceiling arched window. The barn has been furnished to a very good standard giving a contemporary feel whilst retaining character and charm with its exposed beams. The pretty well-equipped kitchen/dining area overlooks the extensive landscaped gardens whilst Foxglove Nook, the annexe to the main barn and originally part of the gamekeeper’s cottage, is just across the courtyard. Foxglove Nook offers fabulous split-level accommodation which is also beautifully well-furnished and offers guests a private bedroom and living area. A luxury bathroom features a large walk-in shower and separate Jacuzzi bath. A door on the upper level accesses a small patio to the front whilst at the rear French windows lead to a second small patio overlooking the large gardens, wildlife pond and mini waterfall. There are several other patio areas to choose from at both the front and rear of this historic property. Guests can also enjoy the summerhouse, chiminea and gas BBQ, and can spend evenings in peace and tranquillity watching the varied birdlife. On clear nights, Oscar’s is a must for stargazers as there is no local street lighting. To the rear of the property is unspoilt woodland which is home to a restored Grade II listed original limekiln from which the owner’s property takes its name – Limekiln Cottage. A small welcome basket stocked with local treats greets you on your arrival.
Oscar’s makes an ideal touring base for the surrounding areas with many attractions such as the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle and Durham city with its fantastic cathedral and castle, an annual jazz festival and the spectacular Lumiere light show. To the south are the delightful market towns of Richmond and Northallerton, both a short drive away. Just a 15-minute drive is the major A1 (north/south) and A66 (east/west) routes and the delights of the North Yorkshire coastline with its quaint harbours and ports. Slightly further afield and little more than an hour’s drive away lies the cities of York and Newcastle, or you can enjoy a day in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales or Lake District. There are many lovely walks over Raby Estates land and down by the River Tees in Piercebridge. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.12, open-tread steps to entrance. All on the first floor.
