Pear Tree Cottage description

Tucked away in a quiet little corner, Pear Tree Cottage is a very quirky listed building that was originally used for animals and has also been used as a forge. Adjacent to the owners’ home, this detached cottage is situated next to the Driffield Navigation, an 11-mile waterway that leads out to sea with paths alongside. It is just a minutes’ walk from the train station. The market town of Driffield is known as the ‘Capital of the Wolds’, one of David Hockney’s favourite places to paint. The town holds a bustling weekly market and also the largest one day agricultural show in the UK, where people from all over England attend. It is a wonderful base for cycling or walking, perfect for those tackling ’The Wolds Way’ or ’The Way of the Roses’. The cottage lies in the heart of the annual ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ road race event, with nearby villages along the route displaying painted bikes and bunting when the event takes place. For cyclists, there are two independent bike shops in town. And for motorcyclists, fantastic, quiet country roads. The host and her partner both own motorbikes, and a bike friendly cafe with amazing ice cream is just across the road.

Nearby are three of East Yorkshire’s finest country houses, Burton Agnes Hall, Sewerby Hall, and Sledmere House, home of the Sykes family, who have played a major part in maintaining and restoring churches and villages throughout the East Riding. Visit the beautiful gardens designed by Capability Brown or visit the farm shops and pick up some Yorkshire delicacies. The Dalby Forest is a 40-minute drive away with ‘Go Ape’, and fantastic mountain biking, former host of the UCI mountain bike world cup. Further into the North York Moors is the beautiful fishing town of Whitby, and Goathland, setting for the TV show ‘Heartbeat’, plus many perfect picnic spots.
The seaside resorts of Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough are a short drive away, with long sandy beaches ideal for the children. From sandcastles to donkeys and rock pools, there’s much to do. The Bridlington Spa hosts some fantastic international acts throughout the year, and Scarborough has a wonderful blend of art galleries, cafes, the castle and Sea Life Centre, and a lively pub scene. The medieval city of York can be reached in less than an hour, with hundreds of attractions, some of which include the iconic minster, museums, art gallery, fantastic shopping, dungeons and much more. Stroll along the cobbled streets of the Shambles, walk the walls, or sit and watch one of the many street entertainers. The traditional fishing city of Hull, awarded UK City of Culture 2017, is also within close reach, with award-winning attraction ‘The Deep’, the wonderful ‘seven seas fish trail’, and many free museums and galleries, not to mention the shopping!
