Pheasant's Roost Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
Pheasant's Roost is a detached barn conversion set amid 13 acres of fields and landscaped grounds, on the outskirts of Broadwoodkelly, 3 miles from Winkleigh. The cottage sleeps seven people in two bedrooms which are made up of a family room with double bed, single bed, double futon sofa bed and mezzanine level overlooking living area and a ground floor double with en-suite. To the rear is a private patio, perfect for a spot of al fresco dining in the hazy summer months. Pheasant's Roost is a charming retreat for large families or a group of friends.

Broadwoodkelly is a typical and unspoilt Devon village. Its history can be traced back to an entry in the Domesday Book and it was the site of many historic events during the Wars of the Roses. In the village-centre is a Grade I-listed church that dates back to the 13th Century, with a 15th Century nave. Interesting features of this church include the wagon roof in the porch and another in the nave. The organ that is still used today originally came from Westminster Abbey in 1873. Just down the road is the larger neighbouring village of Winkleigh, which also remains unspoilt and also has some interesting history to be discovered; just outside the village is a now-disused World War II airfield, which played an important role in dropping secret agents behind enemy lines and other secret missions. The old runways and buildings are now only just visible. In addition, the area has a number of stately homes and National Trust properties to discover. The wild beauty of Dartmoor is a short drive away, as is the rugged Devon coastline.

Devon, with its quiet country lanes, patchwork of lush green fields and sleepy villages is not to be missed. Stately home lovers will be spoiled and why not finish with a scrumptious Devonshire cream tea?

Electric convector heaters with woodburner in sitting room. Electric cooker, microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer in communal utility room, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, TV, DVD. All fuel and power inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair available on request. Off road parking for 2 cars. Private decked patio with garden furniture. Shared use of main garden with lake and garden furniture. Shared heated indoor swimming pool (available 10am - 6pm and at other times by arrangements). Well-behaved pets welcome. Sorry, no smoking. Pubs and shop 3 miles. Note: Due to mezzanine level and unfenced lake, children should be supervised at all times. Note: This property sleeps a maximum of 4 adults and 3 children. We liked the peaceful location and surroundings whilst still being central and not too far to travel to coastal areas. The pool was a great feature. Owners are on site and available when needed and very helpful.

A very peaceful location, welcoming host and the children loved the surroundings. Very much out in the depth of the countryside, we enjoyed walks up the lanes, meals in the local pubs and days out to different locations. Really enjoyed it, would recommend to friends and family, and would certainly consider returning ourselves.

The garden was amazing. Loads of space for our 4 year old lab, a trampoline and garden toys for the kids, all in all really relaxing break. The walks just outside the cottage were great to blow the cobwebs away, and the kids could ride their bikes through the lanes without worrying about traffic. The interior was clean and provided a nice space to spend some quality time together.

The peaceful, quiet location was the perfect setting for us to spend a very romantic Valentines together. The patio was the perfect spot to watch sunsets, take in the views of the gorgeous countryside and the spectacular starlit sky. The owners were friendly and helpful, and offered the perfect balance between attentiveness and leaving us to our own devices. We may be using the word perfect a lot, but there is no better word to describe this charming abode. We were no sooner home, than we wanted to be back at Pheasant's Roost.

December 2009
We stayed in June09 and actually stayed for more than orignal week booked. The property, surroundings and owners were great and we had a great time. Only down sides for us were firstly location which meant driving for approx 40 mins to get to beach. We knew this when we booked, but didn't get an appreciation of distance until we were driving every day to go somewhere. Having said that coastal properties which didn't look nearly as nice were nearly twice the cost of this lovely place. The second issue we had was with the tap water. It came out orange, which meant we needed to use water filter (provided by the owner) before drinking and when washing clothes it stained some orangy brown. aside from the above we spent a great ten days and our daughters (2yrs and 9 months) loved it. especially all the ducks, horses etc.
September 2011
Very relaxed place to stay and we were greeted with tea and biscuits which was lovely!! The inside was very open plan but thankfully we all got on well enough for that to work. The kitchen had everything and you knew that if there was anything you needed (or forgot) that you could just ask! Easy directions to local supermarkets were very helpful and the huge pile of leaflets to local places of interest was fantastic, we even added to it! We visited Dartmoor the most which was about a 50 minute drive away. The fire really does kick out heat making upstairs very hot which is great for drying anything. The most important thing was that our dog (a 2 year old boxer) had a wonderful time.
November 2012
The accomodation was well appointed and so comfortable with all the mod cons and gadgets available - a real home from home. With a beautiful informal garden/lake/smallholding setting, an animal lovers paradise with horses, dogs, cats, chickens and ducks! The hosts couldn't do enough for us, right from the amazing welcome at the start of our stay through to the end. We would definitely recommend Pheasant's Roost to anyone. It was a fantastic stay & so peaceful too!
