Roddy's Cottage Coastal Cottage description

Holiday home
This single storey detached cottage has belonged to the owner's family for generations, and is positioned by the bay in Glenelg. Just 10 miles from the main route to the Isle of Skye and lovingly restored, this cottage provides welcoming accommodation amidst stunning scenery. With an open fire in the sitting room, a cosy dining area, a well equipped fitted kitchen and three bedrooms, the property is well suited for a family break or a trip with friends.

Situated just 10 miles from the main route to Skye is the small coastal village of Glenelg. Set on the shores of the Sound of Sleat, the village is surrounded by incredible, rugged scenery and has preserved its unspoilt beauty and sense of isolation, despite being within easy reach of the area's tourist attractions. Overlooking Skye, Glenelg is situated on a route once used by drovers from the island, crossing over the narrow Kyle Rhea straits to bring their cattle to market. Just a couple of miles away, on the Arnisdale road, visitors can find Sandaig bay – referred to as "Camusfearna" by Gavin Maxwell in his novel Ring of Bright Water. There is even a cairn for his beloved otter, Edal. Glenelg is also home to the best preserved Pictish Brochs on mainland Scotland and is the site of the ruins of Bernera Barracks - an 18th Century garrison for English government troops that still stands next to the village.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Night storage heaters with open fire in sitting room. Electric oven & hob, microwave, fridge, washing machine, tumble dryer, TV with basic Sky package, DVD, radio. Electricity & starter pack for open fire inc. in rent. Bed linen & towels inc. in rent. Cot on request. Off road parking for three cars. Gravelled area with furniture. Sorry, no pets and no smoking. Shop & pub 1 mile.

What a fantastic little cottage in a beautiful location. Had very friendly owners, we really enjoyed our stay and the weather was fantastic too, most unusual. There's not a lot more I can say, you must go if you're going to the west coast.

October 2014
Peace, quiet, tranquility and the forever changing views from the cottage. The location was fabulous - secluded but within a twenty minute stroll to the village pub and shop. The hospitality of the owners - bread, milk, tea, sugar, biscuits and duck eggs were waiting for us in a beautifully warm cottage on arrival - it was like home from home. Even the open fire was laid ready for us to put a match to. Walks from the door and endless hours sat on the garden bench watching the changing tides.
Mr Wightman
August 2013
The log fire made the cottage feel so cosy and welcoming, and the views were beautiful even with the rain. We had a great time, cannot wait to come back.
Mrs Hudson
March 2015
Roddy's Cottage has a superb location in terms of views and for watching birds and other wildlife. There are a number of good walks close by and the village pub, 10 minutes walk away, is good for food and real ale. The cottage has a large informal garden with two great seats offering sea and mountain views. The owners go that extra mile in terms of making you welcome. This was our second visit and hope to return again. There are good opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography in the area.
Mr Nicholson
July 2013
This was our third visit to Roddy's cottage, a fact that must tell you how much we love the place. It is in the most idyllic setting and will appeal especially to those with a love of history, flora and fauna. The cottage is always spotlessly clean and the owners very welcoming. We look forward to a fourth visit.

May 2013
A tranquil and beautiful setting, with accommodation that was perfect for our week. Excellent, friendly owners who had provided milk and bread on our arrival, plus duck eggs. The fire was laid and the cottage location perfect; just outside of Glenelg village and close to the ferry for Skye.

May 2013
At the end of our holiday we were sitting there with a heavy heart about leaving, the setting is incredible. This is the best equipped cottage I have been too and we have visited a few over the last couple of years. We had mixed weather but still managed a fire on the beach watching the sunset with the rain clouds surrounding us - spectacular photos.
Mrs Smart
February 2013
The friendliness of the owners and the location right next to the sea.
Mr Asquith
October 2012
Fantastic place to stay for my trip, the cottage is remote enough to get away from it all and relax, but in a friendly village with such beautiful scenery it was hard to return home!
Miss Worthy
September 2012

August 2012
The owner provided the house with all essential goods you might need for the first breakfast, in case you forgot to buy something on your way to the house - that was a great and wonderful surprise as this is not the standard. Booking with Sykes was easy - as in 2008 - we will certainly come back again. Lovely area and friendly people!
Mr Nicholson

September 2011
The views were spectacular and the cottage was spotlessly clean, cosy and well equipped. The welcome pack of milk, bread, eggs, tea, sugar and biscuits was a nice touch. The owner popped round a couple of times to make sure we were ok. Even when it rained we never tired of the view and watched Skye regularly appear and disappear in the mist.
Mr Nicholson

Roddy's Cottage is the best holiday cottage we have ever had: warm, comfortable and nicely decorated; friendly and considerate owners; a stunningly beautiful location; and a lovely walk along the sea shore to the friendly local pub. Perfect! The only hard part was leaving at the end of our holiday.

October 2010
Everything! It was particularly nice to have the owners so close - it felt as though they had a very real interest and personal investment in the property, rather that a long distance owner. The welcome pack was a really nice touch, as were the duck eggs on Sunday. The cottage was clean, warm and tidy, and represented very good value. The location was spectacular, even the weather was relatively kind to us! In all, a fabulous holiday at a lovely cottage. Thank you.
Mr Chesko
March 2010

March 2010
Roddy's Cottage was an excellent week away. To sit in the front room and watch the seals in the sea, made our holiday.
Mrs Hutchenson
April 2010
The location of the cottage was beautiful and pretty secluded, which is what we were after. Glenelg itself was ideal and had a small shop and a fantastic local inn which served lovely food and had a wonderful atmosphere.
Mrs Longdon

Mr Bray
January 2010
A fire was lit for us when we arrived and milk was in the fridge. We were brought fresh logs to burn. Owners made sure we were warm and comfortable but did not impose on us. Lovely people, as were the other locals.
Mrs Siderfin
June 2010
The cottage is in a lovely position overlooking a bay.
Ms Mladenovic
October 2009
The standard of the cottage and its beautiful location.
Mr Taylor
November 2009
Isolated cottage with excellent views. Goose eggs delivered by owners were very nice. The cottage was nice and cosy, recently refurbished and a few minutes drive to the Glenelg Inn.
January 2014
The cottage is just on the edge of Glenelg with a great view over the water. It is close to the village for an easy walk but away enough to feel excluded and relaxing. It is laid out much for a family get away, one double with a room of two singles off it and seperate bunk beds in another. Washer and dryer, full kitchen, tv with plenty of family DVDs... It all is included. We liked the fire which we kept going all week. Staying over Christmas there were heavy gales and not much to do outside but inside was very cozy. The friendliness we received was lovely, the welcome pack included bread, milk, and even duck eggs... It was all perfect and we certainly would visit again.
Mrs MacDonald
November 2009
Owners very helpful and welcoming. Owners kindly provided milk, bread, eggs and biscuits on arrival.
August 2011
This is the best holiday cottage we have ever stayed in. Warm, comfortable, nicely decorated and well equiped; very friendly and considerate owners; a stunningly beautiful location; and a lovely walk along the sea shore to the pretty village and friendly local pub. Perfect! The only hard part was leaving at the end of our holiday.
September 2011
The situation of Roddy's Cottage far exceeded the expectations raised by the brochure and the website. With its views down the Sound of Sleat and across to Skye it would have been very easy just to sit in the visitor friendly garden enjoying the views and not bothering with all the other features this area has to offer. Our experience was further enhanced by the very warm welcome given to us by the owners Graham and Lilian who were attentive without being in any way intrusive. Their welcome pack was most appreciated and the duck eggs were a whole new breakfast experience! The cottage itself was immaculate and probably the best holiday let we have ever had. We have already booked for next year!
March 2011
Roddys cottage is set in a wonderful location by the sea. You can sit in the window and watch the 4 seasons in one hour ( as happens at any time of the year in the highlands !) with the log fire roaring to keep you toasty warm. You can walk out of the door and explore the coast line watching great wildlife. It is walking distance to the pub which does amazing food and very freindly. The cottage is well equiped with everything you would need whilst staying. The fire is great after a day exploring and otter hunting. With a washer and dryer there are no worries about getting dirty as my 9 year old did every day. We stayed for New year and the locals were really welcoming however i would love to return in the summer to be able to get the ferry over to Skye.
November 2011
great location, friendly people, well equipped cottage. Internal layout of the cottage was unusual, and the suite looked fine but was smaller than average so was uncomfortable for an evening by the fire. plenty to explore and places to visit for day trips too. Great little ferry!
Mr Gray
July 2016
This was the sixth time we have stayed at Roddy's Cottage and have yet to be disappointed. It is immaculately clean and well presented, stunning location, a perfect haven for a family holiday. The owners, were on hand if needed and as always friendly and helpful.
December 2009
Overall, very welcoming and equipped (would perhaps have liked a little more coal to start off with as we went in October, the shop was shut on Sunday and we arrived late on Saturday). Otherwise, comfy, cosy and well equipped in a wonderfully scenic area. Very reasonably priced with friendly, obliging owners. We were in dire need of a total rest and that's exactly what we got! Nothing to dislike, but we understood the cottage had only recently become available to rent, and perhaps could have done with a bit more local information - nearest doctors, dentists, chemists, vets etc (which thankfully we DIDN'T need) and the nearest garage - which we DID need and struggled to look up in phone book as we weren't sure where anywhere was! Otherwise, we can't wait to go back!
July 2010
Stunning location, quiet peaceful sitiuation ideal to unwind.
January 2011
lovely cottage, friendly and helpful owners, fantastic scenary, friendly locals, good pub, good food, really enjoyed our stay in Scotland, had no idea how dramatic the scenary would be and it was wonderful.
June 2010
Wonderful location, lovely and clean cottage. Owner could not have been more helpful or kind. Roaring fire welcomed us and fresh duck eggs from his farm along with other bits and pieces were waiting for us. Beautiful walks and car journeys to Sheena's tea hut - great experience !! Would highly recommend.
April 2010
Really enjoyed out break, the weather was cold, and the cottage remote but still not far from the main road to Skye and Plockton. The area is beautiful and you just outside the town which gives it a pleasant remoteness, that gives the feeling of solitude and peace. We're glad the village has its very own snow plough to keep the road open. Every morning was a delight to wake up with great views and such peace, the water and hills were beautiful. The open fire heated the house, whilst central heating system means either way you'll stay warm.
