The Cottage was almost perfect, we had a really great holiday. Great to have a private space at the back for our two labradors but also use of the front garden. A really warm cottage even in bitterly cold weather. It was well enough equipped to cook a full Christmas dinner with the minimum of improvisation!

The weather was unexpectedly warm. Northumberland is a beautiful county and we covered most of the roads in the Northumberland National Park during our week. The Railway Inn was barely a 5 minute walk from the cottage and has a good menu. The houses and gardens at Wallington and Cragside (both National Trust) were spectacular. You could spend a whole week exploring just these properties as the gardens are extensive and both have plenty of woodland walks. Kielder Water and Forest are not too far away but I would advise sticking to the main roads rather than the forest drive. Ford and Etal area is very picturesque and the thatched Black Bull in Etal is well worth a lunch stop.

Excellent and very friendly couple who where always on hand if you needed advice but always respected your privacy. I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a relaxing, quiet get away from it all holiday and don't worry about the trains, once you have heard one the rest become 2nd nature- not a problem.

The cottage was welcoming and comfortable. The owners were friendly, approachable and very helpful, as were the neighbours. The location is excellent for touring. Our dogs settled immediately. The villagers were welcoming and the nearby pub served excellent meals and the staff were friendly. The weather was superb for this time of year - giving an added bonus.

April 2011
The helpfulness and friendliness of the owners whilst not being invasive was welcomed by two elderly disabled ladies. The property was lovely and despite being near the railway line, very quiet. It was in a handy location for Northumberland's spectacular scenery, coast and castles. I had a wonderful time and my 81 year old friend thought is was marvellous. We will be back and are telling all our friends and relatives. Once again a wonderful Sykes holiday.

November 2016
Just returned from a great week's holidaying at Shunting Cottage. It was perfect for us and our dogs. It was comfortable, warm, clean, well equipped and had secure little patio area to allow the dogs out. It's location was great for exploring Northumberland. The area has so much to offer with castles and beaches, beautiful villages and some top rate restaurants. The owners were very helpful but not intrusive in anyway despite living in the adjacent property. They even offered to dog sit! We had a welcome gift of chocolates for us and treats for the dogs which were very gratefully received. Couldn't have asked for better. Very happy customers!!!!

Standard of accommodation not as expected. Bedroom was dirty with huge cobwebs and stains on the carpets. In fact we had cobwebs everywhere. Hospitality was good, but even the utensils were dirty. My dog has better towels too.

well equipped cottage. lovely location. very friendly owners. dogs welcome. handy for pub serving good food
April 2015
Great cottage, with a enclosed garden space, located close by to all the lovely beach's around. Stayed for a week, where the owner gave us lots of tips and ideas to visit. Pub close by, railway inn, where we could enjoy a drink, or a bite to eat, where our two dogs were made more than welcome.
September 2012
Very friendly owner in this 2 bedroom cottage adjacent to used railway station. Good to have use of wi-fi but one complaint was that it was turned off late at night until morning. Cottage was well appointed with both bedrooms en-suite. Enclosed yard suitable for dogs so means you don't have the added expense of a kennel. All in all recommended for small family with one adult child.
December 2012
everything brill owners welcomed us with bottle of wine box of chocs and dog treats.
December 2011
Lovely cottage with all 'mod.cons', owners next door, unobtrusive but very friendly and helpful when we asked. Ideally situated for exploring Northumberland and only 15 mins. drive to the rail station for Edinburgh or Newcastle. My companion, over on holiday from australia was more than pleased with my choice.
May 2014
A lovely cottage with a wonderful welcome from a friendly owner. Wine, biscuits and dog biscuits left for you. Lovely! The cottage is comfortable and we liked the privacy afforded by the bedrooms being at different ends of the property. Nice firm beds and hot showers. Would go again in a heartbeat. Nearest town is Amble. It has everything you could need and an old fashioned high street. It sells itself as the friendliest port and lives up to it's billing
December 2011
excellent service from owners, always willing to help, advise on things to do,see, and do.The cottage was well stoked, with all the luxuries of home.It is well located, for walking holidays, lots of villages for shops, old historic sites, beaches, and well signposted local roads.Altogher a very good holiday experience that i would recommend to anyone.
September 2011
Location, as far as we were concerned was perfect, nice and quiet with a good local pub, woodland walks for the dogs. Bernard and adrian are the perfect hosts with plenty of local information, if required, if not you are left alone to explore at your leisure.
June 2010
After a holiday in Barcelona was affected by the volcanic ash cloud we were quickly able to identify through Sykes Cottages a place that would offer less than a week booking and at very short notice. Shunting Cottage was chosen due to its location in the North-East. Ideally sized for just the 2 of us, it was well furnished, very comfortable and it was great location for touring the area. A friendly and helpful welcome from the owners (and the dogs!) settled us in very quickly, and we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.
January 2011
Excellent accomodation very clean and well presented. After check in the local owners let us get on with it but was always available if required. Excellent meal in the local pub. We'll be back.
