The Dovecote description

Holiday home
The Dovecote is a stone barn conversion cottage very close to the village of Gilling West, three miles from Richmond, and north of the Yorkshire Dales. Boasting four bedrooms, this mostly ground floor cottage has three double bedrooms and one first floor twin bedrooms, as well as a family bathroom and a family shower room. The cottage also has a fitted kitchen with a dining area, a sitting room with double sofabed for flexible sleeping only, and an open fire. Outside, this cottage has ample off road parking, plus a private patio and gardens with furniture and BBQ. The Dovecote is a perfect holiday cottage for families or groups of friends, who want to explore this magnificent area.

As winner of the 'Yorkshire in Bloom' award, the peaceful Dales village of Gilling West is an incredibly attractive place. Situated in lovely rolling countryside, this pretty, small town is just a few miles to the north of the popular market town of Richmond. With its Georgian Theatre and ruined medieval castle overlooking the River Swale, Richmond not only provides a wide range of amenities but also a number of exciting attractions. Gilling West itself boasts a lovely old church, two pubs - both of which serve excellent food - as well as a village shop and post office. With fishing available near by and a maze of footpaths and bridleways, this is an ideal location for those looking to explore the lovely countryside of Swaledale and Teesdale.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

The Dovecote was a wonderful place for our family to get together, we loved everything about it. It was decorated to a very high standard and had everything we needed. The coal fire in the lounge was perfect for cosy family nights in and hiring the hot tub just made the stay extra special. We will definitely be recommending Dovecote to friends and family!!

The location of The Dovecore is picturesque, idyllic village with two cracking pubs and the benefit of the facilities in Richmond just a few miles away. The warm greetings we received from the owner, reassured us that we had made the right choice, the owners charm and character was an added bonus to our stay

It was a nicely presented house with a lovely log fire and hot tub! The land around it was great open space, especially for kids. The owners were very easy to deal with and flexible which was helpful. Lots of glasses, plates etc which was handy. Lovely location and reasonable price. Milk and biscuits were nice touch too.

Everything about the place was spot on; from the accommodation to the grounds and the owners were very helpful. We would definitely go back and recommend to family and friends. Loads of space in the grounds for young and old to enjoy themselves and had the choice of hiring the hot tub which we used every day. The weather was good and we were able to use the BBQ, which we loved. We stayed for three nights, we were eight adults and one 11 week old baby, his first holiday, it was a great family break.

This was my second visit to The Dovecote and it did not disappoint! Everything was how I had remembered it - clean and well furnished, it had everything you would need in the kitchen. A perfect getaway for the weekend. A beautiful village within walking distance too, I can so recommend!

The owners were very welcoming and helpful. The situation of this cottage was idyllic, as well as being an ideal base for both the Yorkshire Dales and the Moors. We did a lot of cooking whilst we were there, and I have never stayed anywhere where the kitchen has been this well stocked with utensils. I am already planning my next visit.
Mrs Morris

August 2011
Dovecote is in an excellent location, peaceful with lovely views. Although there are other cottages on the site we didn't feel at all cramped or overlooked. It's just a few minutes walk to the village with a shop and pubs, and a few miles (a nice walk) to Richmond. The owners were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. We were in a group aged 17 - 70+ and all of us enjoyed it very much.
Mrs Bradley

The owners were kindness personified, nothing was too much trouble for them. Their desire to ensure that we had an enjoyable holiday was outstanding. The walks from the cottage were superb, especially the Jaggers' Way walk. Do try the Copper Canyon beer at the Angel Inn.

August 2007
The location in the Yorkshire Dales and the wonderful accommodation hospitality of the owners. The property was just right for 4 generations to be together, whilst not on top of each other. The ground floor bedrooms were most appropriate for the elderly great-grandparents.
Mrs Seymour
February 2008
It was a wonderful cottage in a beautiful setting. Very comfortable and well equipped.
Mrs Pearson
April 2008
The accommodation was lovely. It was clean, warm and the owners were extremely welcoming. It was well equipped and the adjoining laundry facilities were excellent. We really enjoyed the company of the owner's lovely collie dog too. We have used lots of holiday companys since our children were little, but this certainly so far, has represented the best value for money without a compromise on quality. Thank you.

May 2008
The whole complex is a delight with far reaching views over the wonderful Yorkshire countryside. The on-site owners are lovely people who do all they can to make sure you have everything you need for a first class holiday. Two pubs in the village - both serve excellent food in friendly surroundings - also allow well-behaved dogs in bar area.

We stayed for my husband's 50th with family and friends. Everyone loved it, particularly the dogs.We want to make it an annual event.
December 2009
The owners are very friendly and helpful which helps you relax. The cottage is well appointed and very clean and well maintained with plenty of room for the two of us and our Westie, thankfully the owners are very dog friendly too. The setting is lovely and quiet with many beautiful walks from the front door. Gilling West itself is very pleasant with a couple of good pubs for eating out. It is ideally placed for accessing the local area and the A1M to get home easily. Close by as you travel to Barnard Castle is a really good farm shop and cafe. This was our second stay here and we are back in 2010 which says it all.
December 2009
There were nine of us in our party, plus a dog, staying for a week. The location was fabulous, particularly because it is so accessible from a major route. The Dovecote was marvellous and having rented numerous large cottages over the years, I rate this in the top three! The owners were also very friendly and helpful. We would all highly recommend this property.
December 2009
Nothing was too much trouble for the owners on site. They were extremely helpful regarding the children, finding outdoor toys and offering child sized fishing rods. Good facilities outside for the children included trampoline and nice play area with large wooden castle. Plenty of room for cricket and football. Nice location for walking the dog- several really nice walks straight from the house. Good base for exploring the Dales and further north to Durham and south to York. House nicely decorated and comfortable. Everything worked. Kitchen rather small ideally - more work surfaces would have been good for us, as we cook a lot.
