The Reading Rooms Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
The Reading Rooms in Oughtershaw is a detached riverside cottage in the heart of the National Park. The cottage has a mezzanine reading area on the first floor but everything else is at ground floor level - there are two king-size double bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen with dining area and a sitting room with woodburning stove. Outside is off road parking for two cars, and a riverside garden with furniture. The Reading Rooms offers good walking from the doorstep, including along the Dales Way, which passes through Oughtershaw, making this an ideal base for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire.

Located at the foot of Buckden Pike, and close to the head of Upper Wharfedale, the idyllic village of Buckden is the perfect place to start exploring the wonderful scenery and pretty towns of this magnificent Dale. Much of Upper Wharfedale is owned by the National Trust and is composed of dry-stone walls and barns, important flower-rich hay meadows and valleyside woodland. Renowned for its walking routes, this region is home to the famous Dales Way, which passes close to Buckden Pike. The village itself is comprised of a cluster of stone built cottages and houses set around a traditional green. The village is also home to the famous 'Buck Inn' - a Georgian coaching pub that retains much of its old charm.

From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?

LPG central heating with woodburning stove. Electric oven, gas hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher, TV with Freeview, DVD, CD/radio, WiFi, selection of books. Fuel, power and starter pack for stove inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Ample off road parking. Spacious garden area with furniture adjoining the beck. Two well-behaved pets welcome. Sorry, no smoking. Shops 6 miles, pub 3 miles. Note: River runs at the bottom of the garden and is not fenced off, children to be supervised at all times.

The property itself was fantastic (no complaints whatsoever) and we very much enjoyed staying there and want to book The Reading Rooms for the same time next year. It was particularly nice to return to each evening and in a very quiet location.

The Reading Rooms is the perfect place to get away from it all. It is spacious, clean and comfortable with a large, fully enclosed garden and huge parking area. There are great walks and views, right from the door in all directions, and 3 dog friendly pubs serving good food all within 6 miles.

This was our 4th visit to the Reading Rooms so I guess we like the place. It's position for exploring the Dales is great with walks from the door. Excellent enclosed garden for our dogs and really comfortable accommodation.

A lovely cottage, in a rural hamlet, quite remote but within 6 miles of Hawes. Enjoyed exploring the stream and local walks. We enjoyed the walking down the valley around Hubberholme, Star Botton and Kettlewell. Enjoyed cycling to Hawes on the road over Butter Tubs, some steep climbs and good descents from the cottage for the more experienced rider! Mucker a lovely stop for a coffee. Much enjoyed.

November 2013
The Reading Rooms are in a particularly isolated location enabling us to experience the peace and quiet of the Yorkshire Dales, while at the same time providing an excellent base for daily walking in the surrounding countryside. The facilities provided were of a high standard. Two double rooms enabled us to spend quality time with our friends, with enough space for us to enjoy each others company. The hamlet of Oughtershaw was close enough to Hawes to enable us to collect anything we had forgotten to bring with us, and to dine out in the evening if we felt disinclined to cook for ourselves.
June 2014
The isolation was exactly what we required, away from the hustle and bustle, and a joy to see our dog in the environment he should be in. The location was perfect, we come to the Dales frequently and this is the best so far. Thank you.
Mrs Simmons

October 2013
It was a lovely cottage in a beautiful, peaceful, idyllic spot up towards the head of the Dale. Plenty of parking. Loved the solid fuel stove in the lounge, but also nice to have central heating as it was quite chilly outside. Just love the feeling of remoteness. Great area for road cycling.
Mrs Naulls

A proper cottage! Lovely quiet rural location with walking right outside the door. The shower was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.
Mr Waim
August 2013
The cottage was wonderful. The location was central to the national park, and there was a good deal of information in the cottage on things to do and see (which we relied upon quite heavily as first timers to the national park). It was obvious from walking in for the first time that this was going to be a comfortable residence. We had all amenities and more in the kitchen, and for an evening there was a lovely sitting room/lounge with television.
October 2015
We took our 2 dogs here at the end of September for a week and had a relaxing time in a lovely cottage. It has everything you need and they leave you milk, tea and biscuits which is a lovely touch. To wake up each morning to this remote beautiful place is great. Stream at the end of the garden. Garden is enclosed though for dogs which is helpful. We went many walks from here and it is the best area around for scenery. Take everything with you as shops are a drive away. No mobile signal but a phone box for emergencies, Wifi signal good. Would definitely return.

Even better than we hoped for, the property is beautifully presented, I wanted to walk on the Dales Way and this was well placed. We looked for somewhere quiet and off the beaten track, cottage was perfect. Would definitely book again. Only downside? No public transport or local taxis, so you will need a car if you want to go anywhere apart from relax locally, which is what we wanted to do.
