The Rowans Family Cottage description

Holiday home
This modern detached bungalow offers a comfortable retreat away from the bustle of everyday life. It is on the owner's estate and is secluded away, surrounded by glorious scenery. The well equipped and fitted kitchen has a dining area and doors leading to a decked patio. The sitting room is spacious and has lovely views over Loch Tarvie. There are two bedrooms and a shower room and outside is a large lawned garden with a decked area and barbecue and near the property is an unfenced loch. A shop and pub two miles away provide guests with essentials and for further amenities Strathpeffer is only four miles down the road. With many outdoor pursuits and attractions close by, this property is a fabulous base from which to discover the area.

The spa village of Strathpeffer grew up in the 18th Century and in 1819 the water was declared to be the healthiest in Britain. Having been restored to its former glory, the Spa Pavilion is used for various events throughout the year including concerts and exhibitions. There is a museum of childhood and working craft shops all housed in a former Victorian railway station. The pump house offers visitors a chance to ‘take the waters' and is also home to a Tourist Information point. There are forest walks to be enjoyed and a walk to the Pictish Hill Fort at the top of Knock Farril, also known as Knock Farrel, will be well rewarded with panoramic views. Strathpeffer is a fascinating base for a great holiday.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

The Highlands were very scenic and beautiful. There was a lot to discover during our travels. The cottage was very neat and there was wildlife including Ospreys, Robins, Red kites and Otters nearby. The view of the lake from the living room was breathtaking. The owners were friendly and provided a warm welcome. The directions to the cottage were clearly explained. The holiday was very relaxing and a welcome break to our hectic schedule. I would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone planning to visit the Highlands.

Wow! Your own little nature reserve. Excellent location, only sounds you could hear were the birds. First time we had visited the East coast of Scotland, lots of places to visit, lots of wildlife to see, including dolphins, will definitely be returning.

This property was absolutely perfect. It was modern, comfortable and just so relaxing, we felt at home straight away. The scenery all around and overlooking Loch Tarvie was beautiful and it was so quiet and peaceful. The owners who lived nearby were really friendly and everything was just perfect. It seemed as though you were in your own corner of Scotland away from it all, but only a few minutes from the Ullapool road. We will definitely be back.
Mr Simpson

The peace and quiet. The location was ideal for exploring all of the upper Highlands. Really good weather for once and no midge bites this time either! The scenery was a sight to behold, especially on the West coast.

The location; it was so peaceful and tranquil. The wildlife was excellent, saw deer, ducks/swans and Red Kites. Plenty other small birds, but not being knowledgeable on birds, weren't sure what they were. The owners made our stay very welcome and a enjoyable experience. Will definitely be back again.

Beautiful bungalow in a superb location. Excellent hub for touring the Highlands.
Dr West
September 2010
Perfect seclusion - view just of heather, the loch and some trees; yet owners live round the corner out of sight. We did not see the deer or osprey that drink and catch fish in the loch, just an occasional fisherman in a small boat in the distance. We found it an excellent centre for visiting Castle of Mey, Strathpeffer, Shin falls etc.
Mr Showan
June 2010

July 2007
The welcome was wonderful. We were shown through the cottage and all the amenities were pointed out. The flowers, bottle of wine shortbread were a lovely touch and totally unexpected. Having items such as foil, food wrap, cooking oil, insect repellent, etc. available was so convenient and greatly appreciated. Although the cottage was secluded and private the drive for groceries was not inconvenient and it was an excellent home base for touring the Highlands.
Mr Mrs Gnych
August 2007
We particularly liked the outlook over the loch and the surrounding hills, quite stunning. the apparent isolation and peace, whilst being within reasonably easy access to the many and varied attractions of this region of Scotland. We had a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The owners were so welcoming and anxious that we had everything that we needed.
Mr Harris
August 2007
A wonderful property, location and host. Made to feel welcome at arrival, and shown around the house. Views to die for, and so peaceful. A great base for a holiday in the north highlands. Would recommend to everyone.
October 2014
If you want to get away from it all, relax in peace, far from the madding crowd, then this is the place to be. We have been coming for a few years now, always loved it, but have been reluctant to leave a review and let others in in this secret haven. It is isolated, far from shops, restaurants etc but if you are a keen photographer as we are the views are sublime, the wildlife plentiful and the deer graze in the lawn by moonlight! It is perfectly placed to tour the highlands, a car is essential, public transport is not an option. It's sixty miles to the Isle of Skye, 40 to Spey-side and the Cairngorms, twenty five to Strathfarrar , another best kept secret. The Mackenzie family are wonderful hosts, keep the cottage spotless and are mines of useful information. Don't bother looking in Secret Escapes website, this will do perfectly, perhaps more for adults than children.
Mr Mrs Cunliffe
February 2007
Location location location! House perfect, view overlooking loch (only 75 meters away) nice owners, peace and quite!
August 2014

August 2013
Lovely spacious cottage in peaceful surroundings. A perfect holiday let for watching wildlife - saw deer, red kite and many birds. Good location with plenty to see and do nearby. Rogie Falls are almost on your doorstep and are well worth a visit. Would recommend.
September 2013
Everything required for a very nice holiday stay and in tthe ideal location for a restful time
December 2009
After seeing the cottage on Sykes website, we immediately booked it,the service and information received was excellent, the descriptions,'photos and directions were first class. On arrival at the cottage,we were greeted by Gillian and Ali,we were made so welcome, also they had put tea, milk, bottled water, shortbread and a bottle of wine in the cottage, which we thought was a lovely touch, and so welcoming. Gillian and Ali were the perfect hosts, offering advice on the area, restaurants and local activities, but were never intrusive, just there if needed. The cottage was in an idyllic setting,so quiet and peaceful, overlooking the loch, with just the birds and wildlife for company! we even saw deer and Red Kites, which was superb a haven for nature lovers. The cottage was well equipped and spotlessly clean,It really is a hidden gem and we would certainly recommend a stay there to anyone.
November 2010
We could not fault; beautifully kept; occassionally there was a very small boat with fisherman on the loch, otherwise totally private, yet the owners lived behind and out of sight, so if we needed any help they were there and we had the security of access so nobody could bother us. We found this an excellent location for visits; we could shop in Inverness and visit John O'Groats and the Castle of Mey. We were blessed with good weather and had no problem with mosquitoes!
December 2009
As soon as I stepped out of my car I wanted to start taking photographs of the lovely scenery. Not another person in site apart from a few anglers in their boats on the loch. The bungalow was perfect with adequate facilities. When the outside temperature dropped the interior stayed warm & cosy. The owners were close by if needed & were most welcoming & helpful. The loction is ideal for touring both the east & west coasts, with excellent roads & very little traffic it was a pleasure to drive. Thing we liked least of all was having to leave.
