The Wheelhouse Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
This barn and wheelhouse conversion is a stunning property on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Many of the original features have been retained including the enormous old beam that once powered the mill. The inviting and cosy sitting room is in the skeleton of the wheelhouse and is a quirky octagonal shape with windows on three sides to take in the views. The modern, well-equipped kitchen has a bright and airy dining area and there are three spacious and peaceful bedrooms, one of them on the galleried landing over the sitting room. The modern bathroom is on the ground floor and there is a first floor shower room. This welcoming property makes a wonderful base for a holiday in this fabulous area.

The peaceful valley of Esk is the setting for Danby in the heart of the North York Moors. The village has an interesting history and is home to a 14th Century ruined castle and the last remaining working water mill on the River Esk. The Esk Valley Railway line runs through Danby and takes in some stunning scenery as it winds its way to Whitby. Danby Lodge is a historic building set in 13 acres of beautiful riverside pasture and has an excellent visitor centre with exhibitions, tea-rooms, a gift shop and various walks going through the parkland. The villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham and the town of Pickering are all within easy reach, as are the coastal villages of Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes, and Saltburn.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

Oil central heating with woodburning stove. Electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher, TV with Freeview, DVD, video, 2 x stereo/CD. All fuel, power and logs inc. in rent. Bed linen inc. in rent. Enclosed rear patio area with garden furniture and BBQ, with views towards sea. Use of owner's orchard and lawned area to front of house. Ample parking, with garaging for one car. One well-behaved dog welcome - this is a working farm and dogs must be under strict control. Stabling and grazing available for horses (by arrangement). The Wheelhouse is in a perfect position, so peaceful, and within easy reach of the coast and beautiful moorland. The cottage is warm and cosy with plenty of room for everyone and has everything you could possibly need for a self catering holiday.

This is a really comfortable cottage in beautiful surroundings, enhanced by the fact that it is situated on a working stud farm. We loved seeing the horses being led out every morning. May 2015
A comfortable, spacious, well equipped cottage sited just to the North of the North Yorkshire Moors. Ideally located for the N.Yorks and Cleveland coasts as well as the N.Yorks Moors themselves. We received a warm welcome from the owner who made a point of taking us through cottage facilities as well as leaving us a much appreciated welcome pack. Our American guests enjoyed petting the many racehorses stabled on site as well as the extensive country and sea views.
Mr Harris
May 2015
A large well equipped cottage, well sited for both the North Yorkshire Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors. The old mill has been tastefully converted to emphasise the historic features whilst maximising available space. Beds are comfortable and bedrooms have sufficient wardrobe and drawer space. The kitchen is well equipped and roomy with good views of the stables. The living room is light, airy and warm. The horses were also an interesting distraction for the friends travelling with us. The cottage is in easy travelling distance from Whitby for the Abbey and old town, Robin Hoods Bay, the North York Moors Railway and the city of York. This cottage is at the opposite side of the moors from where we normally stay, but it is one we would definitely return to.
Mrs Doughty

This was an amazing property and the pictures shown on the website do not do it justice. It exceeded all our expectations and the fact the owner had left fresh milk/eggs and bottle of wine for our arrival gave an added touch that was not expected - or really required. No limit to wood avail for fire and access to horses that owner has on her farm was added bonus.

This is second time at The Wheelhouse and all remains excellent for those wanting a holiday with a feeling of being away from it all. In fact help is always just yards away, the owner being brilliant. The personal touches on arrival (wine, biscuits, home made jam and fresh flowers everywhere) and suggestions for days out etc. without being intrusive are to be admired and rarely found these days.

We loved everything, there was nothing to complain about, the cottage was fantastic, in a great part of Yorkshire, the owner was very nice and we loved seeing Rusty the Dog and the horses, even though the weather was very mixed from horrific gales to a couple of days sunshine it didn't put us off, we shall certainly return again. Thankyou for a brilliant week at The Wheelhouse, we really enjoyed it. Hope to be back again soon.

March 2005
Tourist Board rating - I thought that it actually deserved a higher five tick rating. A real home from home that you can just move into and enjoy for the week as it had everything you needed. The owner made you feel very welcome with a warm house, biscuits, flowers and wine. The Wheelhouse should be Yorkshire's secret, but that's not fair to other holiday makers. Go and stay you'll enjoy it!
Mrs Spurgin
October 2005

July 2005
The best cottage we're had in 30 years of self catering. We found the downstairs bedroom and bathroom ideal for guests. Lots to do in the area.
Mrs Milner
February 2005
The owner gave us a fantastic friendly welcome and the property itself surpassed all our expectations. The cottage was warm, cosy (but not in a small way) and the smallest of details had been taken into account. The area was quiet and secluded enough for us to have the peace we wanted but so close to larger towns such as Scarborough and Whitby so that a shopping trip was easy. The stables which backed onto the property were lovely to see and even the horses were extremely friendly, as was the owners dog! Although our intention was originally to go away for a girls weekend once a year to such a property, we are hoping to go back to the Wheelhouse in the next month or so and then again a few months later. We will DEFINITELY be visiting the property again - the sooner the better. Thank you to Sykes Cottages for helping us fnd the property and to Mrs Cowie for being such a lovely hostess and owning such a fantastic property.
Ms Watson-OHara

December 2004
We enjoyed returning to the wheelhouse to spend time relaxing in the comfort and uniqueness it offered. It had been very tastefully refurbished and it would be hard to find its equivalent elsewhere. We would certainly recommend it to others and hope to return ourselves sometime in the future.
Mr & Mrs Lynas
December 2004
Lovely large, tastefully decorated, unusual house in beautiful countryside - some lovely walks from the front door.
March 2013
Everything about this property was good. Loads of space - more spacious than any other ever visited - and we use these a lot. Upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, so suits elderly people too who may struggle with stairs. Just beware the water issue. It's very heavy in iron, so you would be better to take and use bottled water for tea and coffee, otherwise it's a horrid taste. That's it. Can't fault the place. For good food (excellent food) visit the Jolly Farmer just about 2 miles away, fabulous.
May 2015
A large well equipped cottage, well sited for both the North Yorkshire Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors. The old mill has been tastefully converted to emphasise the historic features whilst maximising available space. Beds are comfortable and bedrooms have sufficient wardrobe and drawer space. The kitchen is well equipped and roomy with good views of the stables. Living room is light and airy. The owner is very friendly and helpful and a useful welcome pack of break, milk eggs and wine is provided. The cottage is easily travelling distance from Whitby for the Abbey and old town, Robin Hoods Bay, the North York Moors Railway and the city of York with its Minster, the Viking centre of Yorvik and the National Railway Museum which are all recommended. This cottage is at the opposite side of the moors from where we normally stay, but it is one we would definitely return to.

August 2014
We had a dreadful journey but arrived to a warm welcome from Pauline, with milk, wine, biscuits & eggs left for us. The property is very spacious ideal for a family. It was nice to see the horses in the yard and also the views were stunning. We lit the wood burner some evenings which warmed the whole house. A real get away from it all property.
April 2013
I won't bore you or interest you with a long and verbose account. Suffice to say the acommodation is top notch and interesting at the same time. Quiet location in easy reach of lots of other interesting places, be it the coast or the moors. The owner is always available but not invasive. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Wheelhouse and hope to stay there again.
January 2013
Lovely setting. Well equipped. Warm and cosy. Plenty of space. We had an excellent stay.
December 2009
The accommodation was perfect and our host was very helpful. This location would suit ramblers better than us as we do not do much walking anymore and it was always at least 25 minutes drive to the nearest suitable restaurant and main town.
February 2010
the cottage was beautiful, there was horses and foals behind the cottage which you could see them through your windows. the owner was very helpful and kind she showed us around the cottage and also left us a small bottle of red wine, fresh eggs and a box of jaffa cakes which was a lovely treat!!! the rooms where comfortable and clean, the only thing i would say is that the water when having a bath was yellow. suggest a shower which was fine. lovely little villages nearby, and not forgetting the opened fire pubs!! we all felt relaxed and chilled. will be booking again soon.
January 2013
great house great location great neighbours xxx
September 2012
Spent a great week with family in this spacious cottage. Lovely views from lounge and if you're fond of horses, a most unusual view from kitchen right into racing stables yard! We loved it. You need a car, but plenty to do round about and some good eating places. Near to Whitby, Scarborough etc and only about 20 mins from "Heartbeat" country. We can certainly recommend it.
August 2011
A lovely property which enabled us to share a couple of days with our daughter and family and to entertain friends.Nice doggy walks from the property and lots of interesting places to visit by car.
January 2012
